My Supernatural Season Nine Christmas Wish List
It’s that time of year again. Yes, my closets are filled with hidden presents for my three boys, I’m making travel plans, and I’m knee deep in “to do” lists for all the tasks that have yet to be finished- but that’s not actually what I’m referring to. Instead, It’s the time of year when I reflect on the first part of this year’s season of Supernatural, looking back at what I’ve seen and what I haven’t, and looking forward to what I would like to see play out in the episodes yet to come.
In many ways, I have enjoyed where this season has taken the story. Gadreel’s possession of Sam, Castiel’s turn as a human and the warring angels storylines have created loads of interesting potential within the Winchesters’ universe. Having said that, there have been some flaws throughout the season – times when the story didn’t gel or the characters’ feelings weren’t fleshed out sufficiently – but the potential for an exciting, invigorating finish to Season Nine still remains. And so as the holiday rapidly approaches and the hellatus extends beyond it, amidst all the busyness and anticipation, I submit my Supernatural Season Nine Christmas wish list, with the hope that come January, at least most of these elements will be incorporated into the second half of the season.
Remember to give us Plot, Plot, and More Plot: One of the reasons the mid-season finale worked so well is because it was full of story. That an episode have a narrative throughout may seem like a no brainer, but sometimes in Supernatural episodes, story is hard to come by. In “Holy Terror” we saw Maliki and Bartholomew wage war upon each other in order to oust Metatron from his current power position in Heaven, Cass forcibly take another angel’s grace in order to have his angelic powers back, and Gadreel take full possession of Sam, using his body to murder innocent Kevin Tran. That was a lot of story, complete with a theme (“I did what I had to do”) and it raised the storytelling bar of SPN for subsequent episodes.
This finale allowed fans to theorize, react, and debate about what has happened and what might be around the bend, and that’s good, because it means we’re interested and invested enough to enter into spirited (putting it mildly) discussion about the season thus far. If Supernatural can hold on to this meaty storyline, despite the intrusion of stand-alone episodes, it will build upon the momentum created by the mid-season finale. That’s easier said than done, however, because the challenge is two-fold: One, each mythology episode has to further the plot. In other words – to be blunt, stuff has to happen! The writers need to move things along, showing us what’s happening with all (or at least most) of these scenarios – including warring angels, Gadreel’s actions, Crowley’s state of mind, and everything else relevant. Two, and perhaps more importantly (but equally difficult), they have to hold our attention while showing filler episodes. Which brings me to my next wish below:
Pace the Season Out More Effectively: Some of Supernatural’s most memorable episodes have been so called stand alone installments. However, in recent seasons, many of the filler episodes, though entertaining, have done nothing to further the story or give us deep insight into the state of mind of our characters. When you think back on episodes like Season Two’s “Houses of the Holy,” Season Three’s “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” or Season Four’s “Metamorphosis” it was easy to see that although supposedly stand-alone episodes, they were brimming with the interior monologue of Sam and Dean, or were somehow clues to where the mythology was headed. Now a stand-alone episode often puts in only a minute or two (literally) about the mythology (“Did you visit Kevin in the motel? Is he having any luck translating the tablets, Dean?”), or one moment about the character’s concerns or state of mind (“Why would he ask me what I was?” {“Dog Dean Afternoon”}). Not every single episode has to further the overarching plot, and when you’re pumping out 23 episodes, that’s almost impossible to do. However, Supernatural has gotten into the habit of starting the season out with a bang the first couple of episodes, then slowly sputtering on the mythology for many episodes until the mid-season finale, then (to continue with the firecracker metaphor) hitting us full on with another bang, then more fizzling, until the last two episodes of the season when its boom bang time for mythology again. To be more consistently compelling, the season must be better paced. That means we need to see where Sam and Dean are emotionally within their larger arcs, even if they are only hunting an isolated monster. Alternatively, we need to have some connection to the overarching mythology (think how “Mystery Spot” or “The Real Ghostbusters” tied in with the broader storyline) present even if the villains are one offs.
Give Sam His Voice: This wish has been on previous lists – more than once. From Season Seven’s Lucifer hallucinations to Season Eight’s decision not to look for Dean, Sam has often been silenced by the writers. We did get a look at Sam’s thought process at the end of Season Eight with “The Great Escapist” and “Sacrifice,” and it was a very welcome glimpse. This season, Sam will find out (because he hasn’t really yet) Dean let him be possessed by an angel without his consent, and that his body was used to murder Kevin Tran. We will certainly need to see how Sam feels and reacts to this news. And though it will most likely cause some strife between Dean and Sam, it would be a refreshing change to have the boys talk by way of Sam opening up to Dean about what all this has done to him. Without the insight into how the possession and its consequences have affected Sam, it will be yet another missed opportunity for powerful character exploration for him. Because the truth is, even after nine seasons, there is still so much we don’t really know about Sam Winchester.
Let Cass Become a Warrior Angel Again: Now that Cass has his grace back, my wish is that the writers let him do what he did best in Season Four – fight likea warrior. Human Cass was a very interesting detour, and we got a thought-provoking look into what that life was like for him in “I’m no Angel.” Too often, however, the writers seem to resort to “fish out of water” humor that wastes Cass’s potential and Misha Collins’ acting ability. Now that the angel factions are warring, Cass could be a major player in that fight, demonstrating (to the other angels and the viewing audience) the fierce power of his new-found “mojo.”
Respect Canon: There have been some issues regarding canon the last couple of seasons. From rogue Reapers to Hell’s easy access, to the infamous “Grand Canyon” line, some scripts have seemed to significantly alter, or just ignore, previously established canon. And though canon is ultimately what the writers say it is, and new canon can always build on what came before it, the fans are very passionate about their Supernatural universe, and it upsets us when it looks like canon is too-easily forgotten, or changed haphazardly. My wish is that all the SPN writers take a refresher course in the major points of canon, and that they always give at least some explanation within the script when changing something significant. Or perhaps, to borrow a quote from Breaking Bad, when messing with canon, it would be best for the writers to “tread lightly.”
Connect the Storylines Personally to Sam and Dean: Last year, with the discovery of the bunker and the Men of Letters legacy, the storyline was a very personal one for the boys. In addition, Sam’s undergoing the trials had impact on both him and Dean. Often times however, the major mythology just doesn’t feel personal enough to pack an emotional punch (cough – Season Seven – cough). There’s so much potential this year with Sam’s possession (it doesn’t get much more personal than that!), Cass’s stint with humanity, then seizing another angel’s grace, and the murder of one of the Winchester’s extended family members (and by Sam’s own hands no less). The angel war doesn’t feel particularly personal, but there are ways to make it more so, and the writers have to tap into those. Because in the end, the most powerful storylines are the ones that deeply effect the brothers.
Let the Forums and Fansites Ring in the New Year with Lively Discussion, but Without Hate: Need I say more? Everyone should feel free to express their opinion about an episode for better or for worse. I think we all want this, but it’s up to each one of us to post in a civil, calm manner. If we do, coming to discuss Supernatural will actually be enjoyable and fun, people won’t feel chased away by anyone else, and it will increase our excitement for and investment in the show- all good things.
That concludes my Season Nine Christmas Wish List. Do you have your own? If so, what’s on it? We’ll all have to wait and see if any of it comes to pass. But for now, I’ll close this way: I’ve said it before, but I’ll always remain loyal to Supernatural. Watching Sam and Dean’s story has been a part of my own in so many ways, that I’ll be along for the ride until the very end. But if the second part of Season Nine can bring together all the above elements into a cohesive, personal, authentic story – well, then the journey will be an epic one.
An excellent list, I don’t think there is anything I could add.

Thank you, the best read in awhile (at least, for me. I adore the lists!)
‘Give us more plot”- agree. This is a tough task you set before the writers though. But “giving Sam his voice” seems even tougher. I must admit I feel scared at the prospect of hearing what Sam has to say. After all he’s been through he may have horrible thoughts in this big head of his. And you know what’s really scary – he may
want to go back to Amelia. 😉 “Let Cas become the
warrior again” – has Cas ever stopped being a warrior?
He’s given an opportunity or finds himself in danger –
and his first reaction is always that of a fighter, “Where
is my blade?” I like his comic fish-out-of-water side too, to me, it doesn’t contradict his belligerence, Cas is like Dean in this, imo. Some people in their comments argue that after all this time spent with humans Cas should be used to their ways and look and behave normal at last. Other angels seem quite capable of blending with people, but Cas can’t – and not because he is an angel, but because he is a freak. He’s strange like some absolutely mundane, wingless humans could be strange and unable to adjust. Cas is a naive
philosopher with a blade and good intentions and as comic and horrifying as such a character would be.
‘Respect canon” – certainly. I know there is wiki with tons of information about the monsters and things mentioned in previous seasons. Is it a canon? Maybe we need something more – the summary of all the facts, the overall concept of SPN mythology. Is there such a text?
‘Connect the storylines personally to Sam and Dean” –
indisputably so! I’m sure the writers are aware of the fact the center of the show is the story of two brothers. My Christmas wish is that they will be able to manage and satisfy our expectations and write many brilliant scripts in the year 2014. Happy New Year!

1. Spell CAS correctly
Do you see an extra S in Castiel? No? Then don’t spell it “Cass”.
2. Bring back angels we cared about because Bart and Malachi are boring as fuck

Hi Rick, thanks for reading and for the comment!
Hi Novi – Your take on Castiel is an interesting one, and it certainly could explain his inability to adjust. Thanks for the comment and Happy New Year to you!

Donna Noble, I know fans like “Cas,” but the writers spell Castiel “Cass” in the scripts, and that spelling is also used in the official companion books, so that was good enough for me, extra “s” or not.
And I see you are already being proactive about the last wish. Good for you.

#4 Donna, it is pretty bad form to lecture a writer on spelling. I believe her spelling is considered correct. I still use Cas but I don’t believe it is the correct version according to show.
Thanks for the article MetamorphicRocks. I completely agree with your wish list. I especially agree with the last paragraph. I will remain loyal to the show until it is no more. 🙂

Fantastic article!! I agreed with every point! In fact, the only wish I have to add is retcon to fix the stuff you mentioned. Supernatural up until these last couple years has done fabulous retcon to fix issues. And actually made the originally story better instead of worse on several occasions-even stories that were great to begin with. IE the Trickster in Tall Tales, comes back in MS and is specifically invested in Sam and then you find out he is an angel in CC and it makes so much more sense as to why he would go to so much effort to convince Sam to let Dean go. Fabulous. Amazing. Seriously the best piece of retconning I ever seen on any show.
And that isn’t the only one but it’s probably the best. That’s what I want for at least SOME of these things you mentioned. Especially the canon and Sam’s missing months. But I would also love it if they had a reason Cas took so much longer to acclimate to Earth and the humans. Naomi hinted that there had always been a problem with him and that he’d be brain-wiped many times. It would be fantastic if that ended up being connected to his disconnection from humans but also from angels.
Or if some of these throwaway episodes ended up having move significance when seen in relation to the whole story line for the season.
Or for there to be a reason Sam didn’t have a voice for the past what 3 seasons but especially at the beginning of last year. A reason he’s no longer the guy in the partnership that gets people to talk. He used to be the one to convince people to trust them or to do things-it was even a joke in a couple episodes with the puppy dog-eyeing people. But much more often than not it’s Dean doing all the talking to everyone, including Sam. And that’s the only person he speaks to some episodes. I would like it if they came up with a reason for that as well as correct it. Like, I don’t know, ever since he went crazy, he’s had a hard time reading people or relating to them. Just something to explain why he leaves the room.
And of course the lore, I’m with you I don’t mind them expanding the lore but it doesn’t feel earned anymore. It often feels like a slap together convenience. I would love it if they’d retcon most of these and earn them. Tell us how and why the reapers went rogue and how that effected their powers. Why they can be seen. Etc. Flesh it out, give it a whole episode even but make it good.
Some stuff would be difficult to fix with retcon, like the 14 instead 16 thing in Bad Boys, but that wasn’t even Glass’ fault it sounds like and it only takes me out for out for a minute, I could live with it. Now the ruguru thing……that’s a whole different issues, it is in direct contradiction of canon. I wish there was a way that could be fixed but I don’t think so.

I really enjoyed your lists, and don’t disagree with a single item!
On the “respect canon” one, I must confess massive irritation with everything done on Reapers from Taxi Driver on; I’ve got me own piece in the works on that one. But in another respect, I’ve gotten much more relaxed; the “Grand Canyon” thing no longer bothers me. Here’s why.
My mom passed away from Alzheimer’s last year. On a couple trips back to Wisconsin, I spent lots of time with my sisters going through old photos, and I got a vivid illustration of the variability of memory, particularly of childhood events. Pertinent case in point: a series of photos of my sisters and me on horseback. I look about 9, which would make my middle sister 12 and my oldest sis 16. My older sisters couldn’t remember anything at all about any situation when we would all have been on horseback. I looked at the first pic and promptly said: “That’s Cricket! Don’t you remember? Rocking Horse Riding stable? It was in Grant or Whitnall park, I don’t remember which, but we used to go riding there!” Even as I went on about the trail with the stream crossing and the straight quarter-mile stretch and the summer we rode there, Ruth and Terry both stayed totally blank. They recalled nothing at all about the stable, the horses, or the trail, or when those photos were taken! The photos were proof, but even the pictures didn’t trigger memories.
So I’m cool with the brothers having forgotten seeing the Grand Canyon as kids until Sam’s fever brought memories back to him, and I’m cool with Dean still not remembering despite having been older than Sam.
But I still can’t accept the Reaper retcon! *grin*

Kelly, that is an excellent point about the Trickster and a great example of retconning that actually made the story better. And I totally agree with you that they need to give some kind of explanation for the significant changes to canon. Even a few sentences here and there, (which wouldn’t be that difficult to throw into a script) would make a big difference. Even when asking an audience to suspend disbelief, you still need to be consistent within your own created universe, or at least give reasons for the inconsistency.
Thank you for the comment!

Hi Bardicvoice! Thank you for sharing your story about the Grand Canyon. I absolutely agree that there is alot of variability in memory, especially childhood memories. We may be able to give the writers a pass on that one – though it would be nice if Dean had said he had completely forgotten about that memory or something!
I look forward to reading your article on Reapers. Thanks for reading and for the comment!

I liked your list and everything here would be on my own list except for “Plot, Plot, Plot and More Plot.” I just feel like there has been way too much plot this season and not enough story. It seems there have been plenty of tasks for each character to perform, but not enough story that has carried those plots for me. But then, like you said, if they had parsed some of it throughout the filler episodes this might not have been such a problem for me.
I must give you an “Amen Sister” about respecting cannon, though. In general, I’m not a cannon Nazi, and can roll with most adjustments to cannon if it enhances the story, but things like the rouge reapers, the angel sword being able to kill everything and anything all of the sudden and Crowely being buddy-buddy with Naomi in Mesopotamia–just takes me right out of it. Man the headache I had after Taxi Driver!
Bardicvoice, I am the youngest of four and there have been many times that I remember things so clearly that my older siblings just stare at me like it was some sort of fever induced hallucination and then later we find a picture or my mom will confirm. It’s weird, but I think these moments are something that left an impression on me for some reason and it was just another day for them. Granted there are plenty of things that they remember that I don’t either, so the Grand Canyon memory just made me sigh, but I wasn’t spending too much time trying to figure it out.
Anyway, great list…so now we need to believe it will happen, because if we all concentrate we can make it happen, right? A sort of wish list Tulpa. ; )

ME, I see what you mean – I think you’re saying there hasn’t been much execution of the plots, and I totally agree.
And yes, the problem with major canon violations is that they do take us out of the story. I think canon is able to be changed successfully if the characters in that world voice why it is changing. But we didn’t get much of that.
Thanks for reading and for your comment!
ME, I see what you mean – I think you’re saying there hasn’t been much execution of the plots, and I totally agree.
Well, yes I do think the execution has been lacking, but I see plot more as various things for characters to do and story the thing that draws you in, ties the plots together and makes us care. I just feel like they keep throwing out these plots and there really isn’t much story to hold it all together. Good God, that actually made sense in my head.
Let me try again. I feel like they are trying to make things seem more exciting by having the characters do more things, but they are missing the reason why I should care that these characters are doing anything.
Okay, I do realize I just said the same thing and I still don’t think I am making sense, I’ll stop now.
