Actress Katherine Boecher interviewed by Supernatural Legend staff, about her starring guest role in tv series ‘Supernatural’! – 06/09/13
Hey Katherine, I’m Giuseppe the founder of the Italian website dedicated to the show, Supernatural Legend (www.theotherlife.net/supernatural) and from all of our entire staff, we will send to you the compliments for your performance in ‘Supernatural’, really an excellent performance. Besides, we also want to thank you for giving us this wonderful opportunity to ask you a few questions. Please, note that you can answer in your own way taking as much time as you like, everything you say will be of great interest to us.
Did you know ‘Supernatural’ before getting the role of Lilith? Did you become a fan after that? How did you get the role and how was your audition?
I was aware of the show before I auditioned for it. My husband had acted previously with Jared Padalecki on “Gilmore Girls” so we followed his work and I had seen “Supernatural” a few times. I did watch the show after being on it. I really enjoyed the entire experience and became a big fan of Eric Kripke, so it was fun to see the twists and turns and story lines that were chosen for the show. I was amazed at the amount of influence the fans had in the show. I hadn’t experienced that before.
Your character became very important and loved by the fandom, although you were just in two episodes. Did you characterize it by yourself? Or did you follow the style of Sierra McCormick (the baby Lilith)?
I did a lot of research on the part when I got the audition. Everything that I did came from the historical research that I did on who Lilith is in historical lore, my own imagination, and opening myself up to be a vessel for creation. I actually did not see Sierra McCormick’s performance until after my first episode. It may have influenced the second episode but it would have been unconscious.
How was working with the cast of ‘Supernatural’? Any particular story from the set?
Everyone was wonderful to work with. Jared in particular was very welcoming, helping me run my lines while we were prepped in the makeup trailer.
Was your character created for a specific number of episodes or, otherwise, there was the opportunity for it to come back in the show? Would you perform Lilith again and explore the story of this character?
My character was only hired for one episode. The producers were pleased with my work and asked me back on the show. It was a very pleasant surprise. I would do it again.
What do you think of Lilith’s storyline in the show?
Never judge the character you are playing.
How was shooting all the scenes in the convent? Was it a real location or just a fake set?
It was a fake set. I lived in a convent for a short time as a young girl so I had a lot to pull from to pretend that it was real.
You did an excellent performance with Lilith’s agony, before her death as a consequence of Sam’s exorcism. How was shooting that scene? Especially, how was shooting all those tosses (for example, against the wall)?
Tiring.
How was working with Eric Kripke? Any story to share with us?
Eric is awesome. Down to earth. Awesome.
9) Do you find you get a lot of recognition because of your appearance on Supernatural? What’s it been like meeting fans at conventions?
I’ve been recognized more from Supernatural than any other thing I’ve done. That and an Oral B commercial I did years ago! I love meeting the fans. I always have a great time.
What are your favorite tv show?
Elementary with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu and TOUCH with Kiefer Sutherland.
I was at New Jersey con back in 2010 when you told this story (great panel BTW), but can you share with everyone reading this what it was like working with Jackie Chan?
Working with Jackie and his team was a blast. The thing that amazed me most was how much time he took with the kids and how much he cared about them. The first time we were formally introduced he shoved a slice of apple in my mouth, smiled a big toothy grin and skipped away to shoot a scene. He’s a crack up.
Are there any TV shows that are high on your list to make a guest appearance? Do you prefer sci-fi over other types of shows?
“Elementary” (preferably not as a dead person!), “The Good Wife,” “Touch,” “The Following.” I prefer dramatic or sci-fi over comedy.
Are there any future projects coming up for you? You just completed filming a new Spike Jonze comedy, Her. Care to tell us about that film and what your role is?
It was amazing working with Spike and his cinematographer, Hoyte Van Hoytema. Getting to work with Joaquin Phoenix was definitely a highlight for me. Spike and Hoyte were like kids in a candy store every day. So much fun. The film as I hear has changed so much in post production, so I won’t say too much about it. You’ll have to wait and see. I produced and acted in a short film called Salon Babe, that is playing at the Playhouse West Film Festival this fall. Also, I’ll be in a play at The Sherry Theater early next year. My husband is the managing director of a theatre in North Hollywood called The Sherry Theater. We built it from the ground up several years ago. He, Scott Haze (who stars in James Franco’s next film, CHILD OF GOD, premiering at the Venice Film Fest), and Jim Parrack (who played Nick Munroe on Supernatural) run the theater together. We are working on an exciting line up of shows and festivals for next year. I’ll be starring in a play there next spring that I am sooo excited about.
