A Visual Review: “Supernatural” 8.12, “As Time Goes By”
It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, but it’s time once again for a visual review! I’ve taken some of my favorite/most interesting screencaps from “As Time Goes By” and put them together in one place. Come see what I’ve chosen!
This episode marked the directing debut of Serge Ladouceur, “Supernatural’s” Director of Photography. I think he did a great job in his debut, don’t you? While I wasn’t fond of the episode, there’s still some great things to look at, so here we go! In chronological order…
1.
This is a neat shot of little John’s bedroom, but the real reason I’ve included it is I’m 99.99% certain the books behind the toy gun are “Hardy Boys” books. Well played, Show. Well played.
2.
This just makes me laugh. Sam is having an entirely appropriate reaction to someone falling out of the closet, and Dean is just like, “I’m gonna finish tying my boot lace, one sec.”
3.
Dean looks like such a badass in this shot.
4.
Abaddon looks so angelic here, ironically. I liked this actress and thought she played a great demon.
5.
Now we know where Dean gets his love of baseball from, huh?
6.
Sam’s best bitchface of the episode.
7.
I loooooooooove this shot. I adore light streaming through things and flashlight-fu anyway, so this is hitting those buttons and thensome. Add in a ghostly Impala in the background and Henry practically in black and white, and I’m totally sold. Gorgeous.
8.
The clouds are just so fluffy! I like the added touch of the neon stars from the motel sign sitting on the clouds.
9.
Sam looks slightly more relaxed and comfortable than Dean, but not by much because his legs are hanging off the bed. These two just look so tense, even when they’re asleep. Dean can’t even unclench his arms, and they’re both sleeping in their clothes and on top of the covers like they just know something is going to happen and they’ll need to go right away. Which, to be fair, it did. And maybe they should have known better and not let Henry stay awake by himself, but hey.
10.
Here’s a very nice Impala driving away shot. I like the streaming light, as usual.
11.
Devil’s Trap on a bullet. Very effective. I hope they use this one again.
12.
Here’s a nice overhead shot at the cemetery. Very moody and atmospheric. Streaming light again, whoo! I also like the framing with Sam and Dean over on the side of the shot.
Some nice things happening in this episode, right? What were your favorite caps?
Really nice. There were so many lovely shots in this episode, I couldn’t say which was my favorite. I did think Serge did a lovely job, as did the actors playing Abaddon and Henry, and I did like the one of the boys’ sleeping. I wonder if Jared ever finds a bed to fit him. Certainly not one with a footboard.
I think Serge did a wonderful job. as DOP would expect nothing less. The cemetery shots were my fav. Of course any shot of Dean in bad ass mode works for me.
I really hope they are Hardy Boys books 😆
I might be showing my age here, but I was totally obsessed by the Hardy Boys when I was in primary school. My sister reminded me of this obsession just last weekend after I said that I couldn’t remember being as obsessed about anything as I am about Supernatural.
I guess I must have a thing for adventurous brothers 😉
Great pics Ardeospina! This whole episode had me wondering if they didn’t borrow from the novel written that was about Abbadon and where they also learned how to make Devil’s traps on bullets. It was all just too coincidental to me but loved seeing it played out on screen instead of just words on a page.
I also love, love, love the pic of badass Dean. They always warm my heart.
Thank you!!! I loved this episode. And seeing the beauty of the light and image is, well, wonderful.

I am 101% certain that those are the “Hardy Boys” books. I own a few from that particular set, one of them right next to me at the moment, and I’m 101% certain. The one on top is #9 “The Great Airport Mystery”, and the one on the bottom is #36 “The Secret Of Pirates Hill”. 😀

It could, but I was obsessed with the Hardy Boys when I was young and I’m only 19 now. 😛
I think the wallpaper in the motel room was used before.
I had forgotten how much I always enjoyed your screencaps and this one was wonderful. But it would have been PERFECT if you included that gorgeous close up shot of Dean sleeping 🙂
I AM/WAS AN ACTOR. I FOCUS ON SCRIPTS & ACTING & COSTUMES. I LOVE WHAT YOU REVEAL TO US. THINGS I NEVER SAW AT ALL OR PAYED MUCH ATTENTION TO THE FIRST GO-ROUND.
I WAS INTO TRIXIE BELDEN MYSTERIES. DO THEY STILL WRITE THOSE? They were at Woolworths…opps 😆
I AM PREPAIRING MYSELF FOR NO MORE SPN. I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH ELEMENTARY ON CBS. I LOVE THE QUEEN’S ENGLISH THAT SHERLOCK SPEAKS. THANKS
