Supernatural S8 Midseason Edition: Rank ‘Em in Five Minutes
It maybe only midseason, but we like to do this during every extended break just because we’re desperate to kill time. Â Rank the Supernatural episodes in five minutes! Â The rules are simple. Â Take the episodes of the season so far and rank them from best of worst in your humble opinion. Â Considering there are only nine episodes, ranking in five minutes should be very easy!Â
The only rule is that once you finish, there’s no going back. Â We want to get the first reaction. Â It’s usually the most honest. Â Here’s the list of season eight episodes in order of airing:
We Need To Talk About Kevin
What’s Up, Tiger Mommy?
Heartache
Bitten
Blood Brother
Southern Comfort
A Little Slice of Kevin
Hunteri Heroici
Citizen Fang
As usual, I’ll list my rankings. Â I consider this season to be very tough considering most episodes have been consistent and entertaining. Â Here’s my initial rankings though from best to worst. Â
Citizen Fang
Bitten
A Little Slice of Kevin
Southern Comfort
What’s Up Tiger Mommy
Blood Brother
We Need To Talk About Kevin
Hunteri Heroici
Heartache
Okay, your turn! Â Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. Â If you choose to defend your reasoning in the comments, feel free. Â Just no criticizing others for their choices. Â With that said, let the game begin!

I’ve loved every episode this season, including Bitten, which I’ve ranked last, but I think the last 2 episodes have definitely been the season’s best. They were both brilliant for very different reasons!

It´s hard to rankthe individual episodes, because every episode has been good, in their own way and none has been bad or boring.
And all have been outstanding one way or another.
While Bitten had not much to give in terms of brotherly moments, the overall story was heartbreaking and just steamrolling you into a breakdown from a deceptively slow start. Usually I´m not one for found footage episodes, but this one just used it perfectly to highlight the underlying emotion. Be it college kids fooling around, fear or simply deadly determination.
Even Hunteri Heroici has a place in my heart, though I ranked it last. Cas just tore my heart out.
But among my favorites, two stand out:
Citizen Fang and Blood Brother.
Which has less to do with Benny, but with an overall dark feel, that was just quintessentially Supernatural.
Absolutely stunning camerawork and directing, great pacing, top notch acting, lots of emotion and suspense.
Blood Brother was the one episode, where I felt both Sam and Dean´s FBs to be perfectly integrated into the episode, easily flowing in a great back and forth, that set them apart in their respective emotional places.
It managed to be an episode about the brothers, though both were apart for most of it.
Citizen Fang
– emotionally scarring, yet beautiful, great acting, great conflict, beautiful visuals and Benny
Blood Brother
– great emotion from all involved, tightly packed, absolutely stunning visuals and directing
Southern Comfort – emotional fun ride, very old school, falling in love with Garth, flowing very smooth and fast paced
Bitten
– it gripped me and didn´t let me go again, it hurt and it hurt oh so good
What’s Up Tiger Mommy
A Little Slice of Kevin
We Need to Talk About Kevin
– I´ve packed those three together, because in my mind, they are just one bulk of episodes. With the same style, the same pacing, the same overall visuals.
They have some great scenes, scratch that… classic scenes, but over all are a little too jerky for my liking.
And I don´t really like the visuals. They´re too bright. Can´t get used to the normal saturation and bright daylight scenes in SPN. That doesn´t feel SPN to me.
But still… Crowley! Samandriel (poor Baby), Dean/Cas and Sammy so painfully alone…
Heartache
– solid episode, with some great visuals and that letter reading moment was breathtaking. I absolutely loved Eleanor and their second talk to her. So telling and a great Sam moment.
Hunteri Heroici
– another good one. Good emotional scenes. Funny scenes. Great quotes.
Not my favorite though. It just wasn´t my kind of episode.
Though I loved the heartache, that was Cas and how he tried to be someone else… and failed so tragically.
And that ending scene? Must have been one of the most beautiful of the whole series.

I don’t know about others, but I tend to like eps that tie into the story arc – though there are some stand-alones in previous seasons that are on my favs list.
I wouldn’t rate any of them worthy of a second look. I’m glad that you can enjoy this season but for me it’s as bad as season 7 was.
I there with you, although I’m starting to appreciate season seven more than I did. At least Sam was comprehensible to me in season seven and we had SOME feeling for what was going on inside him.
I wouldn’t rate any of them worthy of a second look. I’m glad that you can enjoy this season but for me it’s as bad as season 7 was.
LOL!! Jo, I couldn’t agree more with you. So far, this season has been awful. At least last year, I had seen MTNB, HCW, and even TGND (which wasn’t an awful episode despite the Amy crap). I actually enjoyed those episodes, esp. HCW.
This year, there is NO episode I’d happily re-watch! They’ve all been a mixture of mediocre and boring! This season is much worse than S7 IMO. Back then, I had hope for the brotherly bond. . . . now, I feel it’s been destroyed beyond repair! I still recognized Sam last year. This year, he’s a pod person – completely unrecognizable and baffling.
Without giving this much thought, I’m going to rank them in order of viewing (other than Bitten), with the most recent episode as the best.
This is simply because it’s taken me a while to get over my issues with the initial premises and to start enjoying the season for what it is…..the ride that Carver is taking us on, rather than the one I was hoping for.
Bitten is last, because it was just not my cup of tea.

How can you make a comment about an episode that hasn’t even aired yet? Do you really judge shows by their synopsis/previews/spoilers? That’s exactly why I try to avoid spoilers, so I don’t go into the episode with pre-conceived ideas. But each to their own 🙂

I agree! If we were to rank seasons, mine would be:
3
2
1
4
8
5
7
6
If we are ranking seasons, mine would be:
4, 5, 2, 1, 3, 8, 6, 7
But, season 8 could definitely move up in the rankings depending on what happens in the next 14 episodes. We still have a long way to go 🙂
I’ve loved every season for different reasons & even though I have placed season 6 & 7 last, there were some of my favourite all-time episodes in those years (French Mistake, Time after Time, Frontierland, etc). But for consistency, and great story-telling week after week, I place the other seasons higher.

I have enjoyed all the episodes so far, even the much maligned Bitten, it’s only last because of it’s lack of Sam and Dean. I did think it was a good episode though, creative and interesting. CF, BB and SoCo are all pretty neck and neck for me and seem to flow as one long episode. LOVE.
E! Looks like we agree on the top 3, in the same order. And there are quite a few others who agree on those 3, too! Good to know I’m in solid company 🙂

I’ve liked every episode so far this season, except for “Bitten”, which was the first Supernatural episode to completely bore me for the last 8 years.
I love both Benny and Garth, and can’t stand Amelia. But the dog is gorgeous!
Such a great season so far that this is really hard. I usually have an episode I like less than the others by now – season 7, Time for a Wedding, for example. I have liked every episode of season 8, so have to be nitpicky to do this list. (Mrs. Tran is annoying, for instance.) Here is my ranking:

I really really liked all the episodes this season so far, except for Bitten ( I didn’t hate it but I didn’t really like either). For all the others I rate them all an 8 pushing 9 or a 9 pushing 10, but haven’t been completely overwhelmed by any of the episodes. I’m hoping the second half changes that.
karen graham-i was just saying that the synopsis of what i have read doesn’t interest me. like if you read the description of a book and you decide by what you read if its a book you would be interested in reading. same type of deal. The sam/amelia story bores me and i don’t like it, and i have hated the angel/demon story since s6. i watch spn for sam and dean. the purgatory stuff, and benny. we all watch for differant reasons.
That’s fair enough 🙂
But I find that the synopsis is often misleading and a lot more happens than you are expecting… particularly with Supernatural. It would be a shame to write off an episode before watching it. But you are right, we all watch & love the show for different reasons 🙂

Bitten – Awful
I used to not be able to stand the long wait during the hiatus, but not so much for the last few years. I’m not overwhelmed with S8, but I do think there has been some interesting stuff done in it and that it remains good TV with excellent production aspects and excellent acting, not just from the J2s and Ty O., but from most of the support cast too.
I loved the Purgatory stuff. That’s where the action was. Sorry that’s over. I’m loving this new Dean and hope he sticks around. Absolutely hate the Samelia stuff, as it brings every episode to a complete stop. I can’t decide if it’s Days of Our Sucky Lives or General Hospital, but it’s made of the stuff that even network TV is giving up on. I’m hoping that Carver drops that storyline completely with the upcoming episode and Amelia never graces my TV screen again.
From what I’ve read, I’m not jumping with anticipation for any of the upcoming episodes, especially the Charlie one, but I do like a weekly Winchester fix.

i haven’t cared much for the first half of season 8. i liked hunteri heroici and a little slice of kevin. southern comfort wasn’t so bad. but as for the rest of the season, i’ll wait for the second half to see if i can ever go back and rewatch any of the first half eppys. i really don’t care for the way sam’s story is yet again not being told and all we get is to see things the way dean sees them. it’s old and tiresome, but i’ve gotten used to it. so here’s hoping we get some sam insight in the second half of the season.
sam’s flashbacks are the way sam see’s them- i don’t understand what you mean by saying “the way dean sees them”.????
sorry. let me clarify. it had nothing to do with sam’s wackadoodle fbs. what i’m saying is that sam told dean in the first eppy that he thought he died. he stopped hunting because he lost everyone. he was alone. he ran.
dean totally glossed over what sam said about believing his brother died. after sam said he ran away….dean asked if there was a girl. sam said there was and then there wasn’t. dean then jumped to the conclusion that sam abandoned him in purgatory because of a girl. even though sam had no idea dean was in purgatory. even though he told him he believed he died.
so again, show gives the audience dean’s pov, how he sees things and unfortuately, the way dean sees things is what the audience believes. i have seen so many comments from so many people who are upset with sam because they think he abandoned his brother. he just gave up on looking.
in actuality we haven’t gotten sam’s side of what really happened. just these off the wall fbs with a girl he has no chemistry with. fb’s that have shown not an inkling of love between what is supposed to be a love interest. fbs that have left most people confused about what the hell is really going on with sam.
we haven’t gotten sam’s pov about what it was like that moment when he thought dean and cas were dead. we saw nothing of the two months prior to sam hitting the dog. we don’t really know what was happening with sam at all. and i have no doubt that sam has a story to tell and it’s not the same story going on in dean’s head.
kind of rambled, but that’s what i mean when i say we only got to see things the way dean sees them and not the way they really happened.
i understand and i would like to see what sam did and thought before he hit the dog myself. but i would also like to see dean’s life after castiel left him stranded in purgatory. we don’t know what/how dean did/survive by himself or how long was it before he met benny. so you can say we haven’t seen sam nor deans point of view during those initial hours/days/months. we do know sams point of view originally-he thought he didn’t have anybody left so he ran. thats a point of view. we just don’t know how messed up he was and why is he so angry all the time. yeah i would say we are missing a big picture for both sam and dean.
Like nappi I am unable to rank the episodes this season due to my discontent with the Sam storyline. I am taking my answer to this discussion to the season 8 bitterness thread where it is more appropriate.
Hi nappi81- Just want to that I agree with much of your comment. Things are, so far, are more from Dean’s perspective and Sam’s is sorely lacking. But I don’t feel that is what the audience necessarily is taking at face value or is making Dean look particularily sympathetic. I love both characters but I am not crazy about how Dean is handling all this. I understand why he might feel hurt but I also understand Sam’s wanting a regular life, if he thought his bro was dead. Both guys are, at various times, acting a little suspicious. It’s kinda frustrating but I also am enjoying it at the same time. Weird.

I am truly loving this season so this task was quite difficult. Even the episodes that are on the bottom of my list I would happily watch again and have done so several times.
I feel that I am getting both Sam and Dean’s perspective and although it is a bit confusing at time and I am left wanting more, I am very happy to wait and see what the writers have in store for us. I am a happy Supernatural viewer.
It is interesting to see viewers preferences and how different they are, at all relates back to the ‘perception’ thing I guess.

I still can’t warm up to Amelia. I don’t know why. Perhaps because she has no chemistry with Sam whatsoever. I even love Lisa for Dean. There’s something between them but Amelia and Sam reminds me of Dean and Cassie. So good with their own character but clashes with one another. Sam can’t seem to empathy with her pain and her effort to empathy with Sam looks faked and forced. Perhaps it’s intentional just to show that both of them are damaged? And no two damaged people should be together because they’ll destroy each other? Or is it the casting problem?
I love doing this; makes me really think about each episode. Here are mine:

A Little Slice of Kevin – perfect in every way and very exciting. No boring Amelia, Sam is nice, Crowley is awesome, Cas is back, Ms. Tran kicks demon ass, Samandriel needs a hug, Naomi needs an angel blade in her throat ASAP.
What’s Up, Tiger Mommy? – Ms. Tran and Crowley totally make this one. Also a great mix of funny and dramatic.
We Need To Talk About Kevin – Crowley. That is all.
Citizen Fang – It would rank higher if it wasn’t for Amelia who is worse than Lisa. I don’t give a damn about her. Benny though is really great and I just want to hug him.
Blood Brother – this is where I was completely sold on Benny. He’s genuine, and he gave me a lot of feels.
Hunteri Heroici – extremely disappointed. What was this even? The funny was mostly forced, the Amelia flashbacks made me want to kill innocent puppies and an utterly tragic and serious Dean/Cas scene in the middle. The whole thing is badly put together. Oh, and no Gabriel. Fuck this.
Southern Comfort – meh, I hate ghosts, and I want to slap Garth. How dare he steal Bobby’s catchphrases?
Heartache – mediocre filler.
Bitten – the hand camera alone made it almost unwatchable. And I don’t give a rat’s ass about these random characters. This was worse than Doctor-lite episodes on DW.
Wow! That was difficult! But I think I stuck to 5 mins and haven’t checked anyone else’s list yet 🙂
