What's Your Scene? #12
Ok, I pulled out four more episode titles and have put my thoughts on each. What are your thoughts on the following episodes? Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song? And why? It is your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you? Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers.
Something Wicked: With this one, I have a few moments that stand out for me. One is when Dean goes into the Motel Office to book a room and meets Michael, the owner's oldest son. The conversation between the two was great, along with the flashback.
Michael: King or two queens?
Dean: Two queens.
Michael looks over Dean and sees Sam. “hmm, yeah, I bet”
Dean: What’d you say?
Michael: Nice car.
Michael’s mother then comes in and asked him to get dinner for his brother. While watching Michael pouring milk for his brother, we see Dean flashback to fixing dinner for Sam. I loved that flashback, learning a little bit more about what their lives were like as children.
Another is when Michael decides to help the brothers put a stop to the Striga. Even though he was scared, he was willing to do what it took to save his little brother.
Michael: If you kill it, will Asher get better?
Dean: Honestly, we don’t know.
Michael: You said you were a big brother?
Dean: Yeah.
Michael: You take care of your little brother. You do anything for him?
Dean: Yeah, I would.
Michael: Me too. I’ll help.
My last one is this little sweet brotherly moment when Sam opens up to Dean.
Sam: Hey, Dean, I’m sorry.
Dean: For what?
Sam: You know, I’ve really given you a lot a crap for always following Dad's orders, but I know why you do it.
Dean: Oh, God, kill me now.
Time Is On My Side: There was so much brought to the table with this episode. We meet Rufus, we learn of Bela’s passing and of her deal. We have the brothers getting desperate because Dean’s time is running out and the toll it is taking on them, even causing them to go their separate ways for a bit. We have a very creepy and gross MOTW, and I have to say, with being very claustrophobic, the way they dealt with the Doctor, burying him alive for eternity, still haunts me to this day.
To choose just one scene is almost impossible, but I brought it to two moments.
Firstly I love the discussion between Sam and Dean on the way the Doctor disposed of the body’s while Dean is trying to eat.
Sam: But silk used to be the suture of choice back in the early 19th century. It was really problematic. Patients would get massive infections. The death rate was insane.
Dean: Good times.
Sam: Right. So doctors had to do whatever they could to keep infections from spreading. One way was maggots.
Dean: Dude I’m eating.
Sam: It actually kind of worked because maggots eat bad tissue and they leave good tissue. And get this; when they found our guy his body cavity was stuffed full of maggots.
Dean: Dude, I’m eating!
…………
Sam: According to this, Benton’s picky about where he sets up his lab. He likes dense forest with access to a river or stream or some kind of fresh water.
Dean: Why?
Sam: Because that’s where he likes to dump the bile, and intestines and fecal matter. (laughs) Lost your appetite yet?
Dean looks at his burger and thinks for a moment.
Dean: Oh, baby, I can’t stay mad at you. (Dean bites into his burger)
Secondly, I’m going to have to go with Dean's first encounter with Rufus. Starting with him trying to talk to him at his door.
Dean knocks and then bangs on the door.
Rufus: What?
Dean: Hi, uh, Rufus?
Rufus: Yeah! Even if I am, the question is till the same. What?
Dean: Uh, I’m Dean Winchester. I’m a friend of Bobby Singer's.
Rufus: So?
Dean: You called him this morning.
Rufus: So?
Dean: uh, ahem, you told Bobby about a British chick made contact with you.
Rufus: Yeah and so?
Dean: Do you know where she is?
Rufus: Yeah.
Dean: Great could you tell me where I could find her?
Rufus: No.
To him finally getting in with a Bottle of Johnny Walker Blue and the deep conversation between them about Dean’s deal and the toll the job itself can take on them.
Rufus: Kid, can I ask you something?
Dean: Sure.
Rufus: You got three weeks left. Why are you wasting your time chasing after that skinny stuck-up English girl?
Dean: How do you know about that?
Rufus: Because I know things. I know a lot of things about a lot of people.
Dean: That so.
Rufus: I know ain’t no pea shooter gonna save you.
Dean: What makes you so sure?
Rufus: Because that’s the job, kid. Even if you manage to scrape out of this one, there’s just gonna be something else down the road. Folks like us, there ain’t no happy ending. We all got it coming.
Dean: Well, ain’t you a bucket of sunshine
Rufus: I’m what you’ve got to look forward to if you survive. Which you won’t!
And of course, there was the light moment with Rufus disclosing a way to identify someone with more than fingerprints.
Rufus: You do her ear?
Dean: Sorry?
Rufus: You do her ear?
Dean: Did I do her ….hey, man, I’ll try anything once, but I don’t know, that sounds uncomfortable.
It’s A Terrible Life: With this one, I have to go with the elevator scenes with Sam and Dean. I just got such a kick out of these moments.
Sam: Do I know you?
Dean: I don’t think so?
Sam: I’m sorry, man, you just look really familiar.
Dean: Save it for the health club, pal.
Sam: Can I ask you a question?
Dean: Look, man, I told you I’m not into the uh…
Sam: Oh, dude, come on. I’m not either. I just wanna ask you one question.
Dean: Sure.
Sam: What do you think about ghosts?
Dean: Ghosts?
Sam: Do you believe in them?
Dean: Uh, tell you the truth, I’ve never given it much thought.
Sam: Vampires!
Dean: What? Why?
Sam: Because I’ve been having some weird dreams lately. You know what I mean?
Dean: No! Not really.
Sam: So you’ve never had any …weird dreams?
Dean: All right. Look, man. I don’t know you. ‘Kay! But I’m gonna do a public service and, ah, let you know that you over-share.
You Can’t Handle The Truth: With this one, I have to go with the last scenes of the episode. From Sam and Dean being tied up by the Goddess of Truth to Dean’s confrontation with Sam. That entire time I was totally consumed and on the edge of my seat.
Goddess: Hey, Dean, I’m curious. What do you really feel about your brother?
Dean: Better now. As of yesterday, I wanted to kill him in his sleep. I thought he was a monster. But now I think…
Goddess: Now you think what?
Dean: He’s just acting like me.
Goddess: What do you mean?
Dean: It’s the gig. You’re covered in blood til you’re in your own blood. Half the time you’re about to die, like right now. I told myself I wanted out that I wanted a family.’
Goddess: But you were lying.
Dean: No. But what I’m good at is slicing throats. I ain’t a father. I’m a killer. And there’s no changing that. I know that now.
Goddess: So Sam walking back into your life must have been a relief. Hmmm, Mallory to your Mickey. And how do you feel about the band getting back together? Hmm, Sam?
Sam: Look ahem. What we do is hard, but we watch out for each other. And that’s what’s important. And that’s it. That’s the truth.
Goddess: No. No it’s not.
Sam: You said yourself I can’t lie.
Goddess: How are you doing that? That’s not possible. You’re lying to me.
Sam: No, I’m not
Goddess: What are you? What is he?
Sam: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Goddess: Really? I doubt that. I doubt anything that comes out of your mouth right now. You’re not human.
Dean: What?
Goddess: You didn’t know that? Now that I believe.
Sam: Dean, It’s me.
Dean: You are not my brother.
Sam: Just listen.
Dean: What are you?
Sam: It’s me, Dean. Look, please just let me explain.
Dean: Why the hell should I believe anything you say?
Sam: Ok. Ok, you want the truth? Here it is. God’s honest. She was right. There’s something wrong with me. Really wrong. I’ve known it for a while. I’ve lied to you. Yeah. And I let you get turned by that Vamp, because I knew there was a cure, Dean. And we needed in that nest, and I knew you could handle it.
Dean: Handle it? I could have died. I could have killed Ben.
Sam: That should stop me cold, but I, I just don’t feel it.
Dean: You what?
Sam: Ever since I came back, I am a better hunter than I’ve ever been. Nothing scares me anymore because I can’t feel it. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I think I need help.
What are your scenes from these episodes?
one of the best scene for me not just in these ep even in whole SPN episodes is exactly the scene before Dean visited Rufus
acting , line , brotherly moment was awesome & so fit to the contest & very real sibling kind of fight

Something Wicked- I agree with all your picks here. I love that scene when Michael comes to tell Sam and Dean he’ll help, and Dean and Michael’s exchange about taking care of their little brothers as Sam watches in the background. That’s an awwww moment for me.
Time Is On My Side- I always remember when the Doc is about to scoop Sam’s eye out…Yikes.
It’s Terrible Life- You know, I wasn’t especially fond of this episode until I rewatched it on DVD, now it’s a favourite. I always enjoy the scene where Sam and Dean find the Ghostfacers’ how-to video, and how Ed and Harry give them tips tehy learned from the Winchesters. I wondered what they might have thought of the GFs opinions of them once they got their memories back! Also, the scene where Dean tells his “boss” he has important work to do.
You Can’t Handle The Truth- Definitely the last scene. I think I may have watched it with my mouth gaping.
Something Wicked: Love that episode, as I do any episode with flashbacks to their childhood. The mother in me always aches at the flashback scenes. What they both had to do to survive all those days without dad around. Being the oldest of 4siblings living in a single mom home I can totally identify with Dean making his brother meals and the protections factor. Something Sam can never really totally comprehend, even though he tries. One can only be so empathetic for someone else if you didn’t live it yourself. But love that episode.
Time is On My Side: About to watch that episode again today on TNT. Another good one leading up to Dean going to Hell. Season 3 is one of my favorites because of the strong undercurrent of sadness with Dean’s impending demise. So many brotherly moments and watching Sam’s despair build each episode over not being able to save Dean. The end of Mystery Spot just kills me.
Thanks Karen.
I love every one of your picks and all 4 of these episodes.
Dean seeing himself and Sam in Michael and his brother, and Sammy finding out why Dean never questions his dad. And the old lady who sleeps with her peepers open!
I love all of A Terrible Life just because of the closeness of the brothers even though they don’t know they are brothers. It was a big relief from most of the other episodes in season 4 with their distance from each other. Hated that distance!
Loved Rufus and hoped to see him again, but didn’t want to see him die! And the “do her ear?” was hilarious!
I too sometimes think about that awful Doc Benton buried in the freezer for all ETERNITY!!! Even a horrid creature like him doesn’t deserve that, does he? But rather him than Sammy with no eyes, eh?
And how could Sam even imagine becoming Doc Benton himself along with his beloved brother? He was really grasping at straws at that time. Loved how the love Sam had for Dean was obvious all through season 3.
Something Wicked – The flashback to the boys when they were little. It was heartbreaking and bleak, they were isolated and so lonely. I cried. I loved Dean’s “You okay little brother?†at the end.
Time Is On My Side – This is one of only a handful of episodes that after all this time, can still scare the ever livin’ crap outta me. I’ve only watched it a couple of times. It’s really hard to watch. Between the jogger screaming while getting his chest sliced open and his ribcage broken apart while he watches, to the girl waking up and freaking out with maggots covering her skinned arm, to the melon baller entirely too close to Sam’s eye, to the doctor being buried alive, to Bella sobbing and hearing the Hell Hounds closing in, to Dean’s desperation as his clock ticks down, I still clutch my pillow on this one. And I still miss Rufus. I loved that man.
It’s A Terrible Life – This was just pure joy for me, beginning to end. I thought Jared and Jensen did a fabulous job of not knowing one another. Jensen especially, I thought, nailed the awkwardness, not just in the elevator, but also towards the end when he and Sam are cleaning up after the fight: “My dad’s name is Bob, my mother’s name is Ellen, my sister’s name is Joâ€, and he finally tells Sam to get out, after proclaiming “You don’t know me, pal.†It wasn’t just the tension in that moment either; it was also the deeper meaning and insinuation under the words that cut so deep, and how it all translated with what they were dealing with in the real world. And I of course, loved the whole scene with Zachariah in the end. “I am not one of your DUCKS!†“Angel or not, I will stab you in your face.†“Most people live their whole lives without moving anything more than the dirt it takes to bury them.â€
You Can’t Handle the Truth – LOVED Dean’s phone conversation with Bobby. Beautiful! “Did I ever tell you my first girlfriend turned out to be a—†“No! No. Mm-mm.†*Click*
Dean’s conversation with Lisa was heartbreaking. Even though it took me a little while to get used to her, I really did like her and Ben for Dean, and I was so sad for him.
And I loved everything from when the guys entered Veritas’ house through to the end. Especially when Veritas pulls out the dentist’s tongue, and munches on that for a bit. She oddly somehow, manages to make tongue munching look really appetizing. That’s sick, isn’t it? And how she couldn’t wait to taste Dean and Sam’s tongues. That made the twisted and demented part of me wonder just what their tongues would taste like too. The mind-boggling number of lies that Sam and Dean Winchester have told in their lives would indeed make their tongues extremely tasty. Um…I think I may have just weirded myself out. I should go do something else now.
The elevator scene and Dean’s comment to Sam about “oversharing” was pretty hilarious, despite the fact that I don’t really like that episode.
I loved “You Can’t Handle The Truth.” My favorite scene has to be the one where Dean’s on the phone with Bobby, who’s telling him all these semi-embarrassing truths. But I also thought the scene in the stairway where Dean confronts Soulless Sam about getting turned by the vamp was excellent. Sam’s stuttering lie, and the look on Dean’s face as he says “it’s just really been a bad day,” was heartrending. And it all culminated to that very last scene, where the truth comes out, and Dean absolutely snaps. Man…I do love that episode.
Also loved the sandwich scene from “Time is on My Side.”
“Something Wicked” is one of my favorite S1 eps, even though it scares the crap out of me every time. I love the flashbacks. I love Dean’s internal struggle, how “failing” his dad that one time still haunted him. And how when Sam tries to comfort him, Dean’s just like, “Don’t…don’t. Dad knew this was unfinished business for me.” That whole episode was full of great brotherly moments.
Something wicked is great – though so sad – poor Dean, no hug for the kid doing his best…
At the beginning of Skin there is a great moment where Dean puts his foot down and says they aren’t going to investigate Sam’s friend’s problem. Sam gives him this puppydog / stubborn look and next thing off they go, doing what Sam wants. The scene in Something wicked with the ‘scabetty-os’ is exactly the same – the child playing Sam has the same expression and Dean gives in pretty much immediately (with exactly the same amount of exasperation).
I assume the writers did it on purpose. It is such great continuity and shows that all his life Dean has been nominally in charge but Stubborn!Sam gets his own way when(ever) he wants it.
Hi Karen, I always love your picks. Here’s what I liked about these eps.
Something Wicked: anytime we get flashbacks to their childhood, I’m very happy. Dean was such a good brother, but he also was a typical kid wanting to do kid stuff. And Dean’s withering look when he’s talking to the doctor after he’s found out from Sam that he is the stryga. I love those looks of his.
Time Is On My Side: the burger scene, absolutely. The eyeball, very Clockwork Orange. And the Doc being buried alive, he was bad, but still, I shudder at the thought. And meeting Rufus, that is gold right there. I loved him on the X-Files and I sure do miss him now.
It’s A Terrible Life: the scene in the elevator when he thinks Sam is coming onto him, ha! That must have made some slash fans very happy. But I think my favourite is at the beginning with the song, and Dean gets into his Prius and starts the ignition and a heavy rock song is playing, there is just that little hesitation.
You Can’t Handle the Truth: that last scene and Dean beating Sam to a pulp. My jaw literally dropped.
