What’s Your “Supernatural” Scene? #11
I'm back with four more episode titles from my trusty Tupperware container and have put my thoughts on each. What are your thoughts on the following episodes?
I'm back with four more episode titles from my trusty Tupperware container and have put my thoughts on each. What are your thoughts on the following episodes? Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song? And why? It is your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you? Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers.
"Phantom Traveler" – For this episode, the first thing that comes to mind is when Sam and Dean are on the plane and Dean starts getting jumpy over the turbulence. Sam gets serious and tells Dean he needs to calm down.
Dean: Come on, that can’t be normal.
Sam: Hey, hey. It’s just a little turbulence.
Dean: Sam, this plane is going to crash, ok? So quit treating me like I’m frigging four.
Sam: You need to calm down.
Dean: Well, I’m sorry. I can’t.
Sam: Yes, you can.
Dean: Dude, stow the touchy-feely, self-help yoga crap, it’s not helping.
Sam: Dean, you’re panicking and wide open to demonic possession so you need to calm yourself down, right now.
However, I do have to give honourable mentions for the scene where Sam finds out that Dean has a problem with flying.
Sam: Are you ok?
Dean: No, not really.
Sam: What? What’s wrong?
Dean: Wel,l I kind of have this problem with ummm.
Sam: Flying?
Dean: It’s never really been an issue until now.
Sam: You’re joking, right?
Dean: Do I look like I’m joking? Why do you think I drive everywhere, Sam?
Sam: Alright, I’ll go.
Dean: What?
Sam: I’ll do this one on my own.
Dean: Are you nuts? You said it yourself this plane is going to crash.
Sam: Look, Dean, we can do this together. I can do this one by myself. I’m not seeing a third option here.
Dean: Come on! Really? Man!
"Devil’s Trap" – I have to go with the scene where the boys and John are hiding out in an old cabin after rescuing John. I love the moment when Dean starts to realize that John is not John and turns the gun on him. And how Sam takes Dean side.
John: Dean, you got the gun?
Dean: Yeah.
John: Give it to me.
Dean (taking the Colt out of his jeans): Dad, Sam tried to shoot the demon in Salvation. It disappeared.
John: This is me. I won’t miss. Now, the gun, hurry.
Dean hesitates and looks down at the gun.
John: Son, please.
Dean starts to back up a few steps.
John: Give me the gun. What are you doing, Dean?
Dean: He’d be furious.
John: What?
Dean: That I wasted a bullet. He wouldn’t be proud of me, he’d tear me a new one.
John just looks at him as Dean raises the gun, pointing it at him and cocking it.
Dean: You’re not my Dad.
John: Dean, it’s me.
Dean: I know my Dad better than anyone. And you ain’t him.
John: What the hell’s gotten into you?
Dean: I could ask you the same thing. Stay back.
Sam comes into the room and is shocked to see Dean pointing the gun at John.
Sam: Dean? What the hell’s going on?
John: Your brother’s lost his mind.
Dean: He’s not Dad.
Sam: What?
Dean: I think he’s possessed. I think he’s been possessed since we rescued him
John: Don’t listen to him, Sammy.
Sam: Dean, how do you know?
Dean (fighting back tears): He’s …. he’s different.
John: You know, we don’t have time for this. Sam, you wanna kill this demon, you’ve gotta trust me.
Sam looks back and forth between his father and brother. Dean glances at him, but doesn’t say anything else to convince him.
John: Sam?
Sam looks back and forth.
Sam: No. No. (he moves over to stand by his brother’s side)
"The Devil You Know" – I have two moments with this episode. The first one is when Crowley informs the brothers he knows where Pestilence's right-hand man is but informs Sam he can’t go with them, only Dean.
The facial expression Sam makes from being smug to shock and then hurt as he’s being told he can’t go and then Dean agreeing with Crowley. It was both comical and sad.
Crowley: Sam, keep the home fires burning.
Dean: What are you talking about?
Crowley: Sam’s not coming.
Sam: Why the hell not?
Crowley: Because I don’t like you. I don’t trust you. And, oh, yes, you keep trying to kill me!
Sam: There is no damn way. This is not gonna happen.
Crowley: I’m not asking you, am I? Because you’re not invited. I’m asking you (points to Dean) what’s it gonna be?
Sam looks at Dean. Dean stays silent. Sam looks back at Crowley grinning.
Crowley: Gentlemen, enjoy your last few sunsets.
Crowley starts to leave.
Dean: Wait. I’ll go. (Dean turns to Sam) What can I say? I believe the guy.
The second moment is when the Hellhounds follow Crowley and Dean back to the house and Crowley takes off but comes back with his own Hellhound.
The way he pats the invisible hellhound on the head and comments that he’s much bigger had me giggling.
"Live Free or Twi-Hard" – Again, I have two moments I have to go with.
First one is Dean killing all the vampires in the nest.
He was not only deadly and badass, but man, he was HOT!
The second moment was Sam stopping himself from helping Dean from being bitten by the vampire.
When he stopped and gave that evil grin, I have to say I went into complete meltdown over that scene.
I was yelling at the TV “What are you doing? What the hell is wrong with you? Save your brother!”
And because of this episode, until it was confirmed that Sam was soulless, I refused to believe this was Sam! There had to be some supernatural entity causing this. He was either possessed or a shape shifter or something! What ever it was, it was not our Sam!
I loved the scenes from “Devils Trap” and “The Devil You Know” – great choices.
My personal favorite, the scene that is hands-down, quintessentially “Supernatural” for me is from “All Hell Breaks Loose II”, where Sam finds out about Dean’s deal. From Dean’s reluctance to tell Sam that he’d sold his soul, to Sam’s devastation at finding out, it’s just perfect. And it was such a victorious, hopeful moment. They’d just killed the YED, Sam was back from the dead, and it seemed anything was possible. I loved the brothers’ interaction most of all:
“How could you do that?”
“Don’t get mad at me. Don’t you do that. I had to. I had to look out for you – that’s my job!”
“And what do you think my job is?!”
“What?”
“You save my life, over and over. I mean, you sacrifice everything for me, don’t you think I’d do the same for you? You’re my big brother. There’s NOTHING I wouldn’t do for you. And I don’t care what it takes, I’m gonna get you out of this.”
Love, love, love.
Phantom Traveler-I usually think of the scene where the plane is crashing, and Dean’s totally freaking out. I was laughing, but man I felt bad for the guy. Also, remember the demon “smoke” in this one? I’m actually kinda glad they change the design later…
Devil’s Trap-The exorcism scene with Meg. It’s the first scene of SPN I ever watched!
The Devil You Know-That end scene where Sam gets revenge on Brady. It freaking freaked me out. You know, reminder of how tough these guys can really be- “We’re the ones you should be afraid of, right Sammy?” Chills!
That Hellhound scene reminds me of Dean Winchester’s tips for surviving the Apocalypse in the Season 5 companion: “If the enemy produces a Hellhound, you produce a bigger Hellhound. That’s the Winchester way”
Live Free- Dean as a vampire singlehandedly killing a nest of vampires and that shot of his foot on head vamp’s, er, head? Bad. Ass. Actually possibly the most bad ass scene on this show. And yes, I think my voice rose a few octaves screaming “What the f@#k are you doing?” at Sam.
Hi PaintedWolf
I love your scenes. I too couldn’t help but laugh when the plane was crashing and how Dean was freaking out.
I thought if he widened his eyes any further they were going to pop out.
Megs exorcism, Sam killing Brady and Dean killing the vampires are all moments that show just how frightening these two men can be when push comes to shove and just how horrible their job can be when trying to save lives.
Hi Bamboo24
That scene in All Hell Breaks Loose II really got to me too. When Sam is asking Dean if he sold his soul and Dean lies and says no….the way Sam looked and how he reacted just killed me. And how Sam responded with ‘How long do ya get?’, it just says it all on how well these two know each other, how much they can read each other.
Those were all great moments!
I think I scared my dog yelling at Sam when he smirked as Dean was being turned. Couldn’t be our Sammy, no way!
And that bad ass Dean vampire massacre was awesome! 😮
Hi Bevie
I believe I scared my cat with my gasp of shock and then with my meltdown. 😀
I wouldn’t doubt that everyone watching Twi-Hard that night didn’t gasp at first in shock and then screamed at their television/pc when Dean was being bitten.
I do love the moments you chose from each episode. I love it in “Phantom Traveler” when Dean freaks out after he realizes he has to go on a plane, had me laughing so hard. I do love Jensen’s facial expressions, they are priceless.
There is one scene in “Devil’s Trap” that gets me every time. It’s when the YED has Dean pinned to the wall and he is just gushing blood, and he pleads with his father “Please Dad, don’t let him kill me”, and John finally manages to regain control of his body. Just thinking about it gives me chills. That is proof positive right there that John Winchester loved his boys (he didn’t always show it so well, but you get my drift).
Hi Sylvie
I totally agree with you, Jensen’s facial expressions are priceless…I just love them.
That moment in Devils Trap was so crushing, and so true, John may never have won Father of the Year, but I have never doubted that he loved his boys.
Phantom Traveler – This was the episode that introduced me to the show, so I’d be hard pressed to pick any one thing from this. The whole episode had me very intrigued. I like the contemplative look on Sam’s face when they’re in Jerry’s office listening to the EVP recording from the plane going down. I like Dean being afraid to get on the plane. I like Dean’s EMF turning out to be a busted up Walkman. I like how they used ‘Christo’ to find the demon. They never used that technique again. Love the whole episode.
Devil’s Trap – Definitely Meg’s exorcism, and the crash at the end. I was also on the edge of my seat when Sam was getting beaten to a pulp in the alley, and when John was yelling at Sam to shoot him, and Dean was on the floor pleading with him not to. Very intense.
The Devil You Know – I just love Crowley in this one. I loved Azazel when he was around, because I found him truly frightening. But I never ever get tired of Crowley’s snark. “I’ve sold sin to saint for centuries.” “That’s what you get for working with a demon.” “Have you got him nicely fluffed?” “Where’s your moose?” I also loved the reveal that Brady hadn’t been Brady ever since college, and that Sam had a demon on his shoulder even back then.
Live Free – My favorite was Dean’s reverse transformation. I was also yelling at the TV, “Go save your brother, don’t let him be turned! Sam what are you doing?!”
