Salute to Supernatural Burbank: The Jim Beaver Panels
But it didn’t end there! At 12:15 ish (they were running a little later) the next day, Jim was back on stage while Richard Speight was out in the crowd playing emcee. Again, he was taking questions Phil Donahue style. The room was half empty because a lot of people were in the photo ops lines for Jared and Jensen.

Someone asked about “Justified†since Richard and Jim have both been on that show. Remarkably, neither of their characters had been killed. Richard hasn’t been on “Justified†since last season, while Jim’s episodes just started last week. Jim – “Justified is real cool.†“On a show like Justified, if you get killed off, you stay killed off.â€
A big difference between “Supernatural†and “Justified†is with “Supernatural†you get a vague idea of what’s happening when you’re booked and then the script comes a little before shooting. In “Justified,†“you’re in the make up trailer and you still don’t know what it’s going to be.â€
What is their favorite show other than “Supernatural?†Jim has an affinity for shows in which he was killed off. “Deadwood.†Richard – “Band of Brothers.â€
The girl that Rick Worthy kissed the day before was chosen to ask a question next. Richard - “Rick Worthy took Q&A and made it T&A.â€
Did either of them borrow props from “Supernatural?†Richard paraphrased the question since both have been killed off the show. “Is there anything you stole from “Supernatural†and didn’t bring back?†Jim – Books. “I have 9000 books at home and a couple of them came from Bobby’s house.†He started reading while on the set and he didn’t finish them, so he took them home. Most of the books though were on Canadian Tax Law.
Favorite behind the scenes moment from “Supernatural?†Jim mentioned when he took Maddie on the set and she met Robert Singer. She told him she wanted to be on the show. That day. She was told she’d have to come back another day. Later she started saying that lighting was taking too long. Robert Singer said, “She’ll make a great Producer.â€
Jim also mentioned how Jared and Jensen love making up their own dialogue to throw people off. Apparently, they did this to Jim lots of times. He was a favorite target.
What movie or TV show has made them cry? Jim – “Anything with “The Rock†in it.†Richard gave an honest answer, Saving Private Ryan. He couldn’t get through it the first time. That opening scene of the DDay invasion really hit him hard. Jim did say while seeing “Day of the Locust†in the theater, someone asked him if he could cry quieter.
What’s in the alcohol bottles on the show? Jim said the beer is diluted coke. Richard was stunned. “Really, not Pepsi?†Jim pointed out Richard is the one paid to buy Pepsi.

Around this time a fan came up to the mic telling Richard that people up front had questions too. As I’ve mentioned before, Richard tends to favor the cheap seats for questions. “Oooh, the expensive seats are complaining.†Yeah, he didn’t change his tactics.
Another off the wall question for Jim. Who would he choose to die so Bobby could come back, Sam or Dean? He took at long pause to think about the answer, and had a great one. “Who cares?†He decided he would kill the tall one. Richard – “Kill them all.†“It just shows how difficult murder can be.†Jim explained on TV you have to do it with multiple angles. “In real life, once will do it.â€
Richard was hoping Jim could get him on “Psych.†“Get you on “Psychâ€? I’ve been trying to get you off “Supernatural.†Somehow, Tim Omundson was mentioned, particularly his fast growing beard. “Tim Omundson is the Chia Pet of American TV.â€
Have they ever been mistaken for celebrities? Jim told this odd story how back in the 70’s in a town in Oklahoma he was mistaken for both John Lennon and Dustin Hoffman. On the same day. Makes you wonder what they were smoking in that town!
Here’s a fun fact! Idgit was actually written in the script. Jim saw it and said, “Really?†Richard talked again about “Tall Tales†when he first read the script. He thought he was playing a Janitor. It wasn’t until he was on his way to Vancouver that he read he was a supernatural being.
It was somewhere around here that Jensen crashed the panel! Then Clif, his bodyguard, came up from behind and grabbed on him tight, likely to get him off stage. The seats were all full by this time, so the cheering was pretty deafening!
The panel closed with Jim talking about his late wife Cecily doing the “Star Trek†Cons. Fans would come up to her and they would only speak Klingon. It was really bizarre to watch.
Farewell Jim, hope to see you at upcoming cons. In the meantime, you need to get on “Supernatural” season 8, now.
Oh I love Psych. Shawn and Gus are my second favorite bromance (although my nephew keeps insisting Sam and Dean don’t count as a bromance because they’re brothers. But I insist not ALL brother are friends too so they DO count. SO THERE.)
Richard should definitely be on it. He’d fit right in. Zachariah is already a recurring character (Kurt Fuller). He’s freaking hilarous on it. In a completely different way than Zach who did have it funny moments.
Hi Alice
Thank you for sharing this.
Awww I miss Jim/Bobby….I do hope the writers have a script in place for Bobby’s return. I’m really not happy that they killed Bobby off. Even if the episode was beautifully written and acted they could have had him in a coma instead of killing him for “Dramatic” purposes.
Thanks for this Alice. I’m also not happy that they killed off Bobby. I’m not that much of a Castiel fan so the lack of Castiel this season hasn’t bothered me but I am really, really missing Bobby. 🙁 I’d love to see him back again somehow.
Add me to the list who want Bobby back! Loved that gruff loving foster dad. 😥 The boys need him!
Wonderful recap.
I am so glad I’m not the only one out there that thinks Psych and Supernatural need to cross. Hardcore. It would be oh so cool!
I am really excited to see Jim in Chicago. Having read his memoir, the love I had for this man has increased a hundred fold. May he have work as long as he wants it!
And may Bobby return soon and for season 8!
Killing Bobby off was the second worst mistake SN’s ever made. Not bringing him back–in the flesh– would be the worst.
Thanks for the terrific recap. JB one of the most brilliant actors and nicest guys in the industry. He does his little girl proud.
Oh, and when JB does return, he should be carrying a funny/moving script he wrote in which Bobby and Jodie fall in love. JP should produce the episode, and JA should direct. There now. Wasn’t that easy?
Ouch! “JB is one of the best actors in the industry….” Certainly worth repeating.
btw, I was happy to read JB’s comment that he didn’t know if Bobby actually killed his dad or not. A little boy shooting his father for hitting his mother and burying his body in the yard would need years of intensive therapy to be anything approaching normal. To suggest he could grow up to be a man as wise and well-balanced as Bobby sends out the wrong and a very ignorant message about the incredibly destructive consequences killing a parent has on the mind of a child.
