If Not For You
“If Not For You” or The anti “Lowly Sidekick” song
Recently, there were a lot of very negative comments following Comic Con. Some of them made me mad and inspired me.
I “borrowed” this song from George Harrison to demonstrate just a few of the many many reasons why Dean Winchester will NEVER be a “lowly sidekick!”
Great! I agree with you. I never saw Dean as a sidekick. I think of him as a leader, a father, a clever hunter, a brother, a hero, a hilarious funny and at the same time caring person, a brave soldier but never just a simple sidekick.
I read the comments you refer to and feel the same. What is sad though, is that often the Dean-girls refer to him as a sidekick (let’s leave it at that, we all herd other words too) when they should be the ones to “worship” their hero.
Hello Airbat
I would like to say I love your description of Dean, just perfect!
I agree some of those comments were made by people calling themselves `Dean girls`, which is really sad and strange. 😐
No chance of hearing anything like that around here.
Thank you for your comment Ju
Well, the “Deangirls” say that the show writers and runners treat Dean as a “lowly sidekick”, never giving him a proper and personal storyline and an independent life and an active role and a mythological arc, etc. etc.
One could wonder, reading such comments, how can be possible become Deangirls… 😛
I admit I sometimes wonder that too Brynhild 🙂
Sooooooo…beautifully said! 😥
Thank you Jasmine.
I do tend to get a little carried away and inspired by certain characters 😉 Ju
Dean is the heart, Sam is the soul, and we saw what happens when one is imbalanced.
I love this. Dean is more than a side kick, he’s the one who doesn’t quit or throw in the towel—especially on Sam, even when Sam wants to himself at times. He is loving, forgiving, and full of such heart. Thanks for singing a song of praise to such a great and moving character.
You`re welcome Far Away Eyes
It really is a question of Ying/Yang, The perfect partnership with those two don`t you think? 🙂 Ju
I can’t imagine one without the other, really. I don’t think show would have lasted if it had just Sam or just Dean. It’s the two of them together that makes it click, and why I’m excited to see season 7—Sam and Dean a single unit together again.
Exactly Far Away Eyes
I love the fact that at the end of Season 6 they were more `on the same page` than they have been in such a long time.
4 weeks today !!!! 😉 Ju
Hi Leslie,
Believe me it was my pleasure to say, think, put and do this 🙂
Thanks for your comment Ju
Hi Dany
I know I`m `preaching to the choir` with you 😉
And you know I totally agree with your musings on why people watch when they seem to deride so little pleasure from doing so 😮
And you also know that I can [s]bitch[/s] complain quite a lot about this and endless other topics ! 🙂
Thanks for commenting Love Ju
Awesome Julie! Dean is NOT just a lowly sidekick. Never was! Never will be! The so-called Dean girls who parrot that are just not getting the point of this series.
Thanks for sticking up for our hero Dean! The most interesting character ever invented for TV. (I do really think he is real, so don’t hurt me)
Love the guy dearly, and he wouldn’t be the guy I love without his little brother Sammy. Together they are awesome!
Bevie
I would not dream of hurting you, especailly as you express my thoughts exactly 🙂
You need never worry I will always stick up for Dean!
Thanks for commenting Ju
Julie, I am sorry, but humming your ‘version’ of the song, all I hear is Olivia Newton-John. 😆
Anyway, Dean may not seem to get all the headlines (so to speak), but without Dean, SPN would be a boring show. Dean went to Hell and in the next episode (okay, it was a gap of four months, but still it was the ‘next’ episode 😀 ) he came back. He may not have been 100%, but he was Dean. We had Soulless Sam for eleven episodes and didn’t know he was ‘soulless’ for the first six.
Less than a month to go, woohoo. 🙂
Hi nancy, no worries, I like the Olivia Newton John version! 😆
Thanks for your comment Ju
Thank you, everyone, for being yet another site to tell “Dean girls” how they’re doing it wrong. It helps those feelings of uncertainty and conflict so much to be told your feelings are invalid and how you’re not a real fan of Dean’s if you do feel that way. It helps tremendously.
The slideshow itself was lovely, though. I enjoyed it very much, so thank you for posting it. I just should have known better than to read anything in the comments. Still, I’m glad I clicked.
Hello emm,
I am really pleased you enjoyed the slideshow but admit to being saddened that you introduced some of the negativity here that I try so hard to avoid. I promise you will not find any of this in my articles.
We all love this show but seem to perceive it in many different ways, perfectly natural obviously. I have never understood why anyone should feel the `uncertainty or conflict` you mention, just as I did not understand all the negativity towards Season 6. What I also fail to understand is why anyone who does not deride pleasure from viewing would continue to do so, or want to invest time and energy to then write to complain about it.
I really hope you do enjoy the show as much as I do and that the new season does not disappoint you, and you feel that Dean`s story is honoured there as you would hope as there is one thing we obviously do agree on, he really is the most wonderful character! 🙂
Thanks for your comment Ju
I apologize for engaging in negativity, as there was none in your article. I would, however, point out that some negativity towards fans in the comments about posters who do not hold the same views as themselves existed before I arrived. How a website can claim to be positive and denigrate views they don’t agree with is paradoxical to me. It’s fine if you don’t understand others’ points of view, as long as they aren’t dismissed, and you can still derive pleasure from something as a whole while having uncertainty or problems with the details–at least I do. But that wasn’t the focus of your article, and I should have known better than to respond in heat to comments instead of the article overall. So I’ll apologize and take my leave. Thank you again for the slideshow.
Julie,
Once again; totally gorgeous slideshow. You do an awesome job of combining lyrics with perfect images.(It’s so hard to find beautiful images of Dean- right?)ha,ha. 😛
I have been a Dean girl/woman from the get-go. However, Supernatural would not be the successful show it is without the relationship of the two brothers. Sammy is an awesome character as well. But I am more attracted to Dean with all his heart, and guilt, and pain, and sarcasm. 🙄
Fortunately, I have missed the negative comments after Comic-con and I am glad. As Gabriel/Trickster said, “Can’t we all just get along?”
Thanks so much Marilyn.
Rest assured I will continue to search for the perfect image for the lyric 😉
I love your closing sentiment – how true ! Ju
I’m a bit late to this, Julie… you rendered me speechless, sweetie! I love, love, love this! But then, you already knew that! 😉
Thank you for this beautiful ditty!
Love, Jas
Thanks Jas,
You`re not late! Pleased you enjoyed it, I think `The Tiger Mom` might have appeared again. 🙂
Lets just say I got inspried!
Love Ju
Hello Rince1wind,
You`re not late either!
I would not ask about all that was said, it`s all in the comments but trust me – don`t go there 😉 Ju
???
Hello dumarest33
Not quite sure what you mean either?
Do you think this is too serious? Ju
Hi Julie,
This was beautiful, and so, so true for Dean. He’s there all the time, giving, nurturing. He’s like the roots of a tree, which serve a vital function – nourishment and support. Just because you can’t always see them doesn’t mean they’re not doing a vital job. And without them, the trees would topple over and die, or never have grown at all.
Thanks!
Hello Pragmatic Dreamer
Thanks for your comment. I love this analogy, the roots of the tree, the bedrock, so perfect and very true. Ju
