For Whom the Bell Tolls
So, for whom does the bell toll on Supernatural? It’s better to say for whom DOESN’T the bell toll. At least every one has dies on the series at least one, and most have bit the dust many times.
Dean may have the distinction of being the most killed character. He was killed approximately 100 times on the repeating Tuesday and subsequent Wednesday in Mystery Spot (3.11).
How did he die in Mystery Spot? Compliments of SupernaturalWlki, here are a few of them. He was shot twice (once at the Mystery Spot, and once by a robber), hit by a car, crushed by a falling piano, choked on a sausage, slipped in the shower, poisoned by a taco, electrocuted by his razor, killed with an axe by Sam (accidentally), shot with an arrow, and mauled by a golden retriever.
But that wasn’t the end; he was later killed by hellhounds in No Rest For The Wicked (3.16), shot (again) in Dark Side of the Moon (5.16), and a Dean variation, Future!Dean is killed by Lucifer in The End (5.04).
And this season the toll continues. He has died twice so far, in Live Free and Twi-Hard (6.06) (Can’t be a vamp unless your dead) and a whole 7 minutes in Appointment in Samarra (6.11).
Sam is second in deaths to Dean though his tally is much less. He was stabbed to death by Jake Talley in All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One (2.21), wished to death (via lighting) in Wishful Thinking (4.08) , skewered with a pipe by Anna in The Song Remains The Same (5.13), shot gunned by hunters in Dark Side Of The Moon (5.16), and killed by Lucifer in Swan Song (5.22). (And as a side note, in both All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One and Swan Song, Sam didn’t come back 100% Sam.)
For all intents and purposes, no one knows how many times the boys have died. In Dark Side of the Moon, Ash commented that Dean and Sam have died numerous times and been brought back by angels, with their memories erased. So no way an accurate death toll can be established for either one.
Others have faired better on the series. Bobby has died once (Swan Song) and considering he has been with the series since the first year that is amazing. Castiel has not been as luckily as Bobby. In his two years he has died, twice (Lucifer Rising (4.22), Swan Song).
Not that is just the main characters, we have had a lot of others perishing in a lot of bloody, gory and imaginative ways. So I thought it would be fun to see who likes whose death the most, what was the saddest death, which was the most moving death, and who do we want to see dead in the future.

Hi Sablegreen
Wow our boys have certainly died a lot in the past six years.
Oh I thought of another one, in Death takes a Holiday, when Sam and Dean becomes spirits to find out why people can’t die. They were helped by Pamela, who sadly is killed.
Most memorable Dean death:
Number One
Seeing Dean being ripped to shreds, still hard for me to watch.
Most memorable Sam death:
Number One
That whole scene with Sam dying in Deans arms was so shocking and devastating. I couldn’t believe they had killed a main character like that.
Best angel death:
Number One
Seeing Zachariah getting his just desserts was a very happy moment for me.
Best demon death:
Number Five
As much as I loved seeing Ruby get killed, I found Alastair’s death a very compelling and frightening scene, especially watching Sam killing him with a vengeance.
Best human death:
Number Two
Seeing Gordon getting beheaded was a gross by happy moment for me.
Character I’d most like to see dead:
Number One
Not that I hate Samuel, I just feel his time has run it’s course.
Saddest death:
Number five
I still to this day cannot re-watch Abandon all Hope. I don’t what it is but that episode really hit home for me.
Bloodiest and goriest death:
Number Three
Those two eating each other stayed in my head for days…ewwwwwww.
Wow, there really are lots of deaths in our show, specially from our boys and all of them are really cool
Most memorable Dean death:
1. Mauled by hell hounds (No Rest For The Wicked)
It’s definitely the most important and the hardest to watch
Most memorable Sam death :
1. Stabbed (All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One),
To me it’s the saddest moment in SPN history, I still cry every time I watch it, with Dean’ words And every detail.
Best angel death:
1. Zachariah (Point of No Return)
Well, first of all that was just what he deserved, and second it was totally bad ass seeing Dean killing him.
Best demon death:
4. Azazel – aka YED (All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2)
It was the central theme for the 2 first seasons and when he finally died it felt awesome
Best Human death:
2. Gordon Walker (Fresh Blood)
Well, Gordon was awesome, but he deserved to die. And the way Sammy killed him was really cool.
Character I’d most like to see dead!
1. Samuel Campbell
I Just kinda hate him at this point, and I fell that it will be the best for him
Saddest death:
2. Sam (All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One)
I can’t watch that death without crying and crying and crying and feeling so bad for my boys, and that is a lot to say because I have watch that episode like 500 times
Bloodiest and goriest death:
5. Dean wiping out vampire lair in Live Free Or Twi-hard
That one was really disturbing, seen Dean killing all the vamps like that. But there was something really fascinating and satisfactory about that
Really nice article, Love it, Thanks
Sorry for my English, I’m from Venezuela
Ooooo, what a wonderful list.
Let’s see:
Most memorable Dean death: #1, Mauled by hell hounds (No Rest For The Wicked)
A whole season spent trying to save Dean from that fate. My heart broke with Sam’s.
Most memorable Sam death: #1, Stabbed (All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One)
It was the first time one of the two main character died at the end of an episode. I just didn’t see it coming.
Best angel death: That’s a tough one. Zachariah (#1) was definitely satisfying but Anna (#2) going up in flames with that look of joy on her face was definitely pretty memorable.
Best demon death: #5, Alistair. The way Sam lit him up from the inside out was just plain cool. Go Super-Sammy!
Best Human death: Hands down, #2, Gordon Walker. Turned into what he hated most and killed by who he hated most. Karma really is a b#@!h. And once again, Super-Sammy!
Character I’d like to see dead: It’s really hard to decide between 1 and 2. But I guess if I HAVE to decide, it should be Raphael. He so needs some sort of comeuppance.
Saddest Death: #5, Ellen and Jo. I don’t cry over fictional programming much anymore, but this made me cry.
Bloodiest Death: #3, couple eating each other. That was one of the most grossest, squick moments for me.
Oh, Sablegreen, what fun…lots and lots of death and gore…Happy New Year everyone!!!
Hm, most memorable Dean death, No Rest For the Wicked
most memorable Sam, All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1
Best angel death, Zach
Best demon death, Ruby (so glad to see her gone!)
best human death, Bela (it did her story justice)
Character I’d most like to see dead, Samuel (although I love Mitch in the role)
Saddest death(s) Ellen and Jo (never to be separated in this category)
Goriest…definitely Sam garroting Gordon, although those ghouls…ick!!!
Thanks for the fun (yeah, we’re weird)
Most memorable Dean death: Shot gunned by hunters (Dark Side Of The Moon)
I thought it’d be No Rest for the Wicked but this one is the most memorable for me. It was just so random, and pointless. Plus, the knowledge that there were more than angels and demons after the boys; humans now had them on their hitlist too. Dean almost daring Roy and Walt to shoot him, swearing revenge from beyond the grave and the look on their faces, they completely believed him! Vintage Dean.
Plus (and this is really irrelevant seeing as they came back) but I really like the idea of both boys dying at the same time (I’m sick, I know!). When their time eventually comes, I want them to go together. The idea that one might die years before the other, leaving the remaining brother behind just waiting to die so he can join his brother…. Makes me sad!
Most memorable Sam death: Stabbed (All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One)
Again, thought it’d be Swan Song but I’m going to have to go with this one. At a time when being dead actually meant being dead, Sam’s death left me numb. He was the epitome of innocence and honour; only to have that honour stab him in the back, literally. Add to that Dean’s reassurances to his brother that he was okay and the realisation on Sam’s face that no, he wasn’t. Heartbreaking stuff. Plus, the far-reaching devastation that death caused. Yikes!
That being said, Swan Song, with the look of utter peacefulness and contentment on Sam’s face as he falls, despite the horrors facing him. Damn, I don’t know…
Best angel death: Uriel (On the Head of a Pin)
The first of the angels to go. Not so infallible now, are we! I never warmed to that guy.
Best demon death: Alastair (On the Head of a Pin).
Just the pinnacle of a brilliant, brilliant episode. We saw the true impact hell had on Dean, the full extent of Sam’s powers, the look of ‘Oh crap’ on Castiels face as he witnessed Sam killing a demon with his mind. Win, win, win.
Add to that, Alastair was just a brilliant villain. He freaked the crap out of me. Maybe it was just the look of him or how he spoke but he just had unmitigated evil coming out his pores. He was a vicious, bloodthirsty bastard and revelled in it.
Best Human death: Gordon Walker (Fresh Blood)
Choices fairly limited here! I’d have to say Gordon, mainly because we actually see him die. Plus, the manner of his death…. I cut my hand fairly badly with a razor blade when I was a youngster so ever since then anything sharp, blades, knives, broken glass etc, makes me cringe so decapitation via razor wire definitely creeps me out.
Character I’d most like to see dead: Balthazar.
His name is too hard to spell and he looks like Gordon Ramseys younger brother. Enough said. Plus, so far, he’s an opportunistic, money grabbing little feck, like an angelic version of Crowley.
Saddest death: Every single one of them.
Must be the hormones (or the weather) but I get teary every time I look at these. Dean because of the savagery of his death, with Sam beside him unable to stop the flood of emotion (such a contrast to Dean when Sam died, too stunned to even cry.) Sam, the look of utter confusion on his face as he dies, for us to see his life ebbing away. Jeez, that hurt.
Bobby, because he’s Bobby, the surrogate father, the cornerstone (and I was afraid by the spoiler of a ‘beloved character dies’ that his death might actually be final). Castiel, okay, not actually bothered about Castiel in this incident, it was just a vessel…
Ellen and Jo, man, the look on Jo’s face when she realises Ellen won’t let her die alone, and Ellen, when she realises Jo is gone. John, just because he’s John. It was the start of the family breaking apart. As with Sam and Dean, he gave it all so willingly for his family. Plus, he started a chain of events that would inadvertently lead to every other ‘death’ here.
Bloodiest death: Couple eating each other in My Bloody Valentine.
Hands down. I was sitting there thinking ‘They won’t go there, they can’t go there, ah crap, they’re there’. Only on SPN!
There’s one more death, and I’ve no idea why, maybe it’s just the entire episode but the death (second time round) of Father Gregory in Houses of the Holy makes me hurt right here (points to heart). Sam daring to hope he’s an angel only to realise he’s just a spirit. Throw in the whole ‘Maybe I could be saved’ speech and I’m in floods of tears even thinking about it.
That was (depressing) fun! Thanks Sablegreen.
Thanks for this it’s an awesome poll! Lots of fun to reminisce about all the deaths…
Most memorable Dean death:
2. Hit by car (Mystery Spot)
Hysterical – and it looked awesome, like in the movies.
Most memorable Sam death :
1. Stabbed (All Hell Breaks Loose: Part One),
Devastating – Dean’s scream “SAM†as he held on to his baby brother was so sad, like he lost his reason to live (which is just what Dean was thinking)
Best angel death:
1. Zachariah (Point of No Return)
Awesome! Rewarding! Take that you smug bastard!
Best demon death:
2. Ruby (Lucifer Rising)
Satisfying – the way the two brothers came back together after their knock down drag out fight and wordlessly knew what they had to do, Sam held her Dean stabbed her and the viewers screamed YES!
Best Human death:
1. Bela (Time is on My Side)
Bout freakin time!
Character I’d most like to see dead!
2. Raphael
He’s just no good. I don’t like him. He needs to go…
Saddest death:
5. Ellen and Jo (Abandon All Hope)
Tragic, noble, a true sacrifice…and OMG the look on Ellen’s face just after Jo dies just rips your heart out!
Here are some of the bloodiest deaths in the series. Pick your favorite!
6. Sam garroting Gordon in Fresh Blood
Absolutely gross and disturbing…but boy was I cheering “GO SAMMY!†all the way through it! (hmm, maybe I should talk to a therapist about that…)
Wow, this is just what I needed after a long day, dealing with snow and a seven hour round trip commute.
Thank you Sablegreen.
Most memorable Dean death: hands down, it has to be the end of Season 3, when he is mauled by the hellhounds. Weren’t we all holding out hope that Sam and Bobby were going to get him out of the deal. But it was not to be.
Most memorable Sam death: also a no brainer, we thought that he had ‘won’ over Jake, but that backstabber (literally) does the unthinkable. ‘SAMMY’
Best angel death: I have to go with Anna’s. It showed just how powerful Michael was.
Best demon death: Ding Dong the bitch is dead!!! Ruby is no more. Sam and Dean end the season back on the same page, working as a team.
Best human death: Gordon tried to shoot Sam, he used Dean as bait, he deserved to die. Sam got to show that he can be a bad ass too.
Character I’d most like to see dead: Gramps needs to die bloody and painfully for what he has put Sam and Dean through. Hopefully by one of them or maybe Bobby.
Saddest death: They were all sad, but the saddest has to be the deaths of Ellen and Jo, because they are probably not coming back to life, so knowing that they are gone is heartbreaking.
Bloodiest death: The one that made me actually turn away from the tv has to be the couple eating each other from ‘my Bloody Valentine’. That is a scene you do not want to watch while enjoying a snack.
Happy New Year, everybody.
