Several posts on another thread suggested that SPN do fewer episodes each season so that there would be fewer filler episodes. I actually like the MOTW episodes. When they're done well, they are some of the more creative episodes because the writer isn't constrained by having to move the plot forward. That got me to thinking about my favorite MOTW episodes, so I thought it would be interesting to ask people to share their favorite one from each season. I consider an episode to be a MOTW if there are no scenes that move the mytharc forward, but some references to it are OK. Others might define it differently. To get the ball rolling, here are mine:

S10- Fan Fiction. I thought the MOTW pickings were really slim this year.

S9- Even slimmer pickings, so I have to go with Dog Dean Afternoon.

S8- Everybody Hates Hitler (closely followed by Hunteri Heroici)

S7- Plucky Pennywhistle.

S6- Clap Your Hands if You Believe.

S5- Sam, Interrupted (closely followed by The Real Ghostbusters)

S4- Yellow Fever

S3- for such a short season this had some of my favorites. I'd like to call it a tie between Mystery Spot, A Very SPN Xmas and Bad Day at Black Rock, but if FORCED to choose I'd go with Mystery Spot.

S2- Again, an embarrassment of riches, but I'd probably pick Houses of the Holy, VERY closely followed by Born Under A Bad Sign and Tall Tales

S1- This one is hard since most of the episodes are MOTW and I loved many of them, but one of the most fun episodes in the entire series is Hell House, so I'll go with that.

What are your picks?

This is always tough; some seasons, particularly the early ones, had a lot of great MOTW episodes. And some of the later seasons did not.

S1 Bloody Mary good old fashion urban legend
S2 Roadkill surprise twist I didn't see coming
S3 A Very Supernatural Christmas Great MOTW, great backstory on the brothers and the amulet. Honorable mention to Bad Day at Black Rock.
S4 Yellow Fever Dean was great in this one
S5 The Curious Case of Dean Winchester Can't go wrong with Chad Everett playing old man Dean
S6 Clap Your Hands If You Believe I know a lot of people didn't care for Soulless Sam but he was funny as hell in this episode.
S7 Time After Time
S8 Everybody Hates Hitler Golems, Hitler, Evil Nazi bastards, Barney Miller, and the Men of Letters Bunker; who could ask for more?
S9 The Purge Slim pickings this season but this was clever, with a new type of monster.
S10 Fan Fiction Weak season as far as MOTW goes; technically this is a MOTW episode so why not. About A Boy was pretty good, too.

Hmm, it is a tough one because I might regard MotW episode one that has a new monster or a monster that you hunt. that doesn't belong to the Myth arc.

So here goes...

10. the Werther project but if I am more strict about myth arc It's Angel Heart. I really loved the new Grigori Angel idea. (About a Boy pretty tied with AH)
9. It is not Bloodlines! *cough* Now that we got that out of the way I would choose Alex, Annie, Alexis, Ann.
8. Everybody Hates Hitler
7. (Oh nooooo, season 7, I can do it...) Time after time. Eliot Ness. no Leviathans. Need I say more?
6. Live Free ot Twi Hard
5. Changing Channels
4. Yellow Fever
3. Mystery Spot
2. Tall Tales
1. Scarecrow definitely

S5 Sam Interrupted

S6 Clap Your Hands

S7 Plucky's- evil clowns, kids restaurant worker gone mad (who wouldn't)

Hmmmm.... best MoW episodes? That's going to be tough as I have trouble with that line between MoW and myth arc episodes.

Season 10: Werther Project - One of the only decent episodes all season; the pickings were mighty slim. Some might consider this myth arc, so in that case Ask Jeeves which was at least fun in a very grim and pessimistic season, and remembered that Sam was a character on the show and theoretically one of the leads.

Season 9: Mother's Little Helper? - Ugh.. I am not at all sure. This season was pretty bad also. Maybe Dog Dean Afternoon which was cute and irreverent. Going back through the episodes I am finding it hard to even remember what happened in most of them. Tells you how successful I thought season 9 was.

Season 8: Everybody Hates Hitler - That one's easy. It's the only decent MoW in Carver's disasterous debut as show runner IMO. As soon as he had Sam not look for Dean and didn't give us any credible reason for his actions I knew we were in trouble. Thankfully the great Bed Edlund came through as always.

Season 7: There were a few from this season that I liked pretty well. I'll have to go with Plucky's but Repo Man was pretty good. Is that one considered myth arc? Death's Door was brilliant (man I miss Sera Gamble's writing) but I think most people would consider that myth arc as well.

Season 6: I am in the minority by I LOVED Soulless Sam... LOVED HIM. But I guess pretty much most of the episodes with him in it are considered myth arc. I think I'll have to go with The French Mistake but Unforgiven comes in a close second. Also liked My Heart Will Go On and You Can't Handle the Truth.

Season 5: Ah! Now we are getting into the meat of things. My Bloody Valentine, Sam, Interrupted and Changing Channels are running neck and neck and neck for me in a season filled with great episodes both myth arc and MoW. Maybe Changing Channels isn't considered a MoW?

Season 4: Ooooh an embarrassment of riches in this season, but it will be difficult to decide because even MoW episodes were intricately woven into the myth arc. For me it's a tie (again) between Metamorphosis (one of the most gut wrenching confrontations between the boys until this year) and Monster Movie which is hilarious and brilliant. Yellow Fever, After School Special and Wishful Thinking all run a close second. And where does an episode like It's a Terrible Life fit in? Myth arc yes, because of Zachariah, but still a MoW but with a twist. Another great episode.

Season 3: For the shortest season this one has the most episodes that I simply can not choose between. Mystery Spot, A Very Supernatural Christmas, Bad Day at Black Rock, Bad Blood (another GREAT Bro-Mo) and who could forget creepy Dr. Benton in Time is on My Side and the 'real' episode Ghostfacers. Season 3 gets a bad rap... for me it is filled with some of the most iconic episodes of the series. I guess maybe Mystery Spot could be construed as myth arc because of Gabriel, but at the time he was still just the trickster at that point. Still tho' it was heavy on the 'Dean's Deal' story which I guess could be construed as myth arc. Still, there are plenty of other eps to choose from in this season.

Season 2: I have a soft spot for Playthings and Houses of the Holy and also loved Heart, What is and Should Never Be, and Tall Tales introduced the Trickster. Born Under a Bad Sign is one of my all time favs, but I guess since that one alludes to Sam's powers it's off the list. Ugh!!! Are you kidding me? I can't choose! Heart was the first episode I saw and I was so totally blown away by it, so maybe......

Season 1: Provenance - I loved this episode and the connection between Sam and Sarah and I am still bitter over her pretty unnecessary death (thanks a bunch Carver). Runner's up include Bloody Mary, Asylum, Hell House and Faith are all stellar MoW episodes as well.

Whew! This took a good deal of consideration on my part. It's pretty clear that I can't even begin to narrow it down to a single episode person season except in the later seasons where the pickings are slim and the good ones really stand out.

Season 1: All the episodes every one (even Bugs and Route 666 cause relatively speaking ....) they are all pretty much MOTW but if I am forced to pick: Skin, Scarecrow and Bloody Mary.

Season 2: Bloodlust, The Usual Suspects, Hunted, Born Under a Bad Sign

Season 3: Fresh Blood. Long Distance Call

Season 4: Yellow Fever, Sex and Violence,

Season 5: Good God Y'all, Free to be You and Me, Sam Interrupted,

Season 6: Live Free or Twihard, Clap your Hands, And then there Were None.

Season 7: Sigh (that's just for MoTW, other eps were fine)

Season 8: Everybody Hates Hitler, Remember the Titans

Season 9: The Purge, Mothers Little Helper, A4

Season 10: Ask Jeeves

(I loves me some Seasons 1,2 and 6)

To be honest except that it is missing some meta eps that I like (no monster or they are mytharc) and my absolutely fave episode (Mystery Spot) this is very similar to what my list of all time favorite episodes would be...

1) I will always have to edge this out to Wendigo (#2) as it was my first watched episode.

2) Nightshifter (#12), hand's down, no second thoughts.

3) Is "a very spn xmas" a MotW? Debatable by the rules established (same with Mystery Spot). If not those two, then Ghostfacers (#13) - it was clever.

4) Tie between #4-6. In order: Metamorphosis had great character advancement while leaving the arc alone, while Monster Movie and Yellow Fever were just plain fun.

5) Putting an * here because this is one season there really shouldn't have been fillers (everything should have been related to the world ending). To that end, the Real Ghostbusters (#9) fits criteria.

6) Clap Your Hands if You Believe (#9) by such a wide margin the other MotW episodes walk away in shame.

7) Tough, since a lot of MotW could have flags on their eligibility. I'd say a tie in Adventures of Babysitting (#11) and Repo Man (#15) as they both explored areas SPN really hadn't touched on yet.

8) Everybody Hates Hitler (#13) - easy winner.

9) INTERRUPTION: something I just noticed, but does anyone else think the first episode of the 7th and 9th seasons should be switched? RESUME: Bloodlines!

...

Nah I'm totally trollin' ya. Winner is Alex Annie Alexis Ann (#19) with Dog Dean Afternoon (#5) a VERY close 2nd.

10) Tough because there isn't so much an outstanding MotW episode, as just outstanding MOMENTS between them as well as the question of what does and doesn't relate to the plot this season. I would have Hibbing 911 (#8) just edge it out purely because of Hippie Vampires. Halt & Catch Fire doesn't count since it's just a repeat of Bloody Mary.

Now of my choices? The best? By creator:

Kripke: Nightshifter
Gamble: Clap Your Hands...
Carver: Everybody Hates Hitler

With Kripke's episode edging out Gamble. I've shown that episode to people that have never seen or even know anything about SPN and they've been captivated and fascinated by it.

Why do people like Yellow Fever so much? Scared!Dean is funny (though I actually don't like the really OTT screaming) but I think they mucked the episode up in two ways. One was the 'Dean is a dick' line - I can see how the script might have had that more than balanced by the scene with Lilith where it is made clear that he's not a 'dick', but he did something terrible in hell, but in production firstly her telling him this was literally drowned out by the sound effects and secondly the audience, who didn't know already what Dean had done in hell, missed the point. To give Kripke credit, he realised that they hadn't set it up properly and he said so. But secondly the whole premise of the ghost story with the wrong done to the ghost was so awful that it really overshadowed the humour for me.

I love Monster Movie though - almost perfect.
