Defintion (deus ex machina)- The term has evolved to mean a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Depending on how it is done, it can be intended to move the story forward when the writer has "painted himself into a corner" and sees no other way out, to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, or as a comedic device.

...I love when Death appears on SPN, but I am having a hard time not having this in my mind the entire time...not really a discussion topic, just felt like saying it :p

Other than knowing Death will be part of the finale, I'm spoiler free...I'm amped and ready, believe it.

yep, it can definitely be a cheap and easy way out... right up Carver's alley. Sam's been busting his ass to find a way to save Dean when it all it took was for Dean to call 1-800-DEATH. I guess we'll see what happens tonight.

that's my issue. They have Sam to make it happen, so Death seems like an unneeded addition. Ah well! As long as its entertaining I'm

While I usually love Death's appearances, I have big reservations about his role tonight. What possible reason could he have for helping the Winchesters AGAIN? What can they do for him that he cannot possibly do himself? If his condition for helping Dean is that Dean becomes a reaper (as some are suggesting) I will be incredibly disappointed. Reapers have become the one bit of "canon" that can be contorted to fit the needs of any story, and it will tick me off if they do this. Aren't reapers quasi angels, spiritual beings created for their specific purpose? Why the hell would he need Dean to be a reaper? And if it's just that he wants Dean to reap a particular person, again, why does he need Dean to do it? Finally, even if they come up with a somewhat credible condition for Death's help, I will still be very disappointed for the reasons Cody and NJSPNFAN have stated: it would be a classic deus ex machina, which would also make a joke out of this whole tortured season. All the angst by Sam and Dean, all of Sam's desperate efforts, all just a waste of time until Dean thought to call in Death. I would a million times rather that Sam do something risky that cures Dean but then backfires, instead of having Death cure Dean. I'm hoping Death doesn't play an instrumental role in saving Dean, but why else would they go to the trouble of writing him into the episode. I will admit that after the rampant, wild speculation about the finale, I can't wait to see what happens.
