Sin City
I loved all the moments that Dean and Casey were trapped in the basement. They had such chemistry. The information we learned from these conversations did add to the worry for both Sam and Dean.
Dean: Hey speaking of downstairs. What’s it like down there?
Casey: What hell?
Dean: Yeah.
Casey: That’s right. You booked a one-way ticket with that deal. You’re not going to like it Dean. And um judging from the trouble you’ve caused I don’t think you’ll be getting the presidential suite. No it’s the pit of despair. Why do you think we want to come here?
Dean: Hey can I ask you a question?
Casey: I’m an open book.
Dean: So the gate opened. The demon army was led out. What now? I’m not seeing a big honking plan here.
Casey: Honestly? There was a plan. Azazel was a tyrant, but he held us all together.
Dean: Azazel?
Casey: What you think his friends just called him yellow-eyes? He had a name. After you did him in, it all fell apart.
Dean: Sorry about that. So what, no chain of command?
Casey: There was. It was Sam. Sam was supposed to be the Grand Pooh Bah, lead the big army. But he hasn’t exactly stepped up to the plate, has he?
Dean: Thank God for that.
Casey: Again with God? You think this a good thing? Now you’ve got chaos, a war without a front. Hundreds of demons all jockeying for power. All fighting for the crown. Most of them gunning for your brother. For the record..I was ready to follow Sam.
Another scene I liked was when Dean questions Bobby about Sam. Seeing Sam kill both Casey and the Priest and how he killed Jake, Dean is starting to wonder if Yellow Eyes/Azazel was right about Sam not coming back 100 percent himself.
Dean: The demon is dead. And so is that hot girl it was possessing.
Bobby: Well it had to be done. Sam was saving your life.
Dean: Yeah but you didn’t see it Bobby. He was cold. Bobby!
Bobby: Yeah?
Dean: Back in Wyoming, uh there was this moment. Yellow Eyes said something to me.
Bobby: What’d he say?
Dean: That maybe when Sam came back from.. Well, wherever that maybe he came back different.
Bobby: Different how?
Dean: I don’t know. Whatever it was it didn’t sound good. You think..? You think something’s wrong with my brother?
Bobby: No. Demons lie. I’m sure Sam’s okay.
Dean: Yeah. Yeah me too. ( both looking a little unsure)
After School Special
With this episode the scenes with Sam and his teacher Mr. Wyatt stood out for me the most. The first one was when young Sam is held back by Mr. Wyatt to discuss his essay.
Mr. Wyatt: Mr. Winchester, can I talk to you?
Barry: Um I’ll wait for you outside.
Sam: Look if this is about the fight, I didn’t start it.
Mr. Wyatt: Oh, no, it’s not about the fight, Sam. You know this assignment was nonfiction, right?
Sam: Yes, Mr. Wyatt.
Mr. Wyatt: So you and your family killed a werewolf last summer, huh? Why would you write something like this, Sam?
Sam: It doesn’t matter. As soon as my dad gets back, we’re leaving. So you can flunk me if you want to.
Mr. Wyatt: I’m not flunking you. I’m giving you an A. Aside from the werewolf is that really how you describe your family?
Sam: Yeah.
Mr. Wyatt: Well your brother’s quite a character. And your father, he seems, um, driven. Anyway it’s good Sam. It’s really good. Have you ever thought about pursuing writing?
Sam: I can’t. I have to go into the family business.
Mr. Wyatt: Family business?
Sam: Yeah my dad’s a…My dad’s a mechanic. So I have to be a mechanic too.
Mr. Wyatt: Do you wanna go into the family business, Sam?
Sam: No one’s ever asked me that before.
Mr. Wyatt: Well?
Sam: More than anything, no.
Mr. Wyatt: You know I don’t wanna overstep my bounds here but you don’t have to do anything you don’t wanna do. Look I mean I know what it’s like. I come from a family of surgeons and that wasn’t me. So you know I traded in the money and prestige of being a doctor for all the glamour you see around you. The point is there are maybe three or four big choices that shape someone’s whole life. And you need to be the one that makes them, not anyone else. You seem like a great kid, Sam. Just live the life you wanna live.
The other is when older Sam goes to thank him for his advice.
Sam: Mr. Wyatt?
Mr. Wyatt: Yes?
Sam: You probably don’t remember me, um, but my name is Sam Winchester, and um, I just wanted to thank you.
Mr. Wyatt: For?
Sam: I was a student here. And uh you gave me some advice once.
Mr. Wyatt: Winchester, right, right. Yeah you uh you wrote that horror story.
Sam: Yeah, yeah, I did. Yeah it’s kind of all been one long horror story.
Mr. Wyatt: What do you mean?
Sam: Nothing, Sorry.
Mr. Wyatt: So what was this advice? I might need to plagiarize myself down the line.
Sam: You told me I didn’t have to go into the family business. You said I should make my own choices.
Mr. Wyatt: Ah so you managed to do your own thing then, huh?
Sam: Yeah, uh for a while, yeah. And I think I went to college because of you. But you know, people grow up.
Mr. Wyatt: Yeah.
Sam: Responsibilities and …,but still, um you took an interest in me when no one else did. That matters. So thank you.
Mr. Wyatt: Well you know the only thing that really matters is uh that you’re happy. Are you happy Sam?
Sam doesn’t reply.
However honourable mention does have to go to Dean in his gym outfit
Clap Your Hands If You Believe
This was a fun episode. So many great lines, as only Ben Edlund can write. I have so many moments that I loved.
Dean’s ‘Fight the Fairies’.
Dean escaping the Aliens and returning to the motel room to find Sam in bed with the Hippie Chick.
Dean in the corn field being chased by a UFO while on the phone with Sam.
Dean: “UFO! UFO!!”
Sam: Dude, stop yelling, you’re breaking up, I didn’t catch that last part.
Dean: CLOSE ENCOUNTER! CLOSE ENCOUNTER!
Sam: Close encounter? first? Second? (Sam calmly drinking his beer)
Dean: THEY’RE AFTER ME!
Sam: Better run, man, I think the fourth kind is a butt thing,
Dean: Empathy, Sam, EMPATHY!
Sam: (orders another beer) They still after you?
Dean and his fight with ‘Tinkerbell and cooking her in the microwave as David Bowie’s ‘A Space Oddity’ is playing. Dean then showing Sam the exploded remains of ‘Tinkerbell” but Sam doesn’t see anything.
Sam: Let’s go with you see it and I don’t, what the hell was it?
Dean: It was a little naked lady, OK? A glowing, hot naked lady, Nibbles, and, she hit me.
Sam: I’m not supposed to laugh, right?
Sam and Dean sitting in Marion’s trailer sipping tea in tiny little tea cups as she explains the lore on Fairies.
Dean: Why are the fairies abducting people?
Marion: There is much theory and little fact, we know they only take first-born sons, just like Rumpelstiltskin did; personally, I think they’re taken to Avalon to service Oberon, King of the Fairies.
Sam: Dean, do you service Oberon, King of the Fairies?
As Sam strugglers with the tiny cups he finally asks Marion if she has bigger cups.
Hello Cruel World
This was one of those episodes that had me emotionally spent by the end. So much action and emotional moments making it hard to pick just one moment.
With Cas wading into the water until he is seen no more. Just a sudden burst of black goo spreading through-out the water until it dissipates.
Dean heart-brokenly picking up and folding Cas’s trench coat after is washes up to shore.
Seeing the Leviathan’s true image.. huge mouths and teeth.
Sheriff Jody Mills in the hospital after surgery and seeing the Leviathans in action, then calling on Bobby for help as she’s not sticking around to be eaten.
Bobby’s house being burned down and him missing. Dean’s message to him, telling him he better not be in the wreckage as he needs him otherwise he’s strapping his beautiful mine brother in the Impala and driving off the pier.
Dean and Bobby looking after Sam’s injured hand with Dean handing him water to ‘hydrate’ and a protein bar to ‘protein-ate’ then takes his injured hand and removes the bandage, pours alcohol on it and then Bobby rewraps it.
Sam’s battle with hallucination of Lucifer who is constantly tormenting him.
Dean and Bobby’s reaction to Sam telling them about the hallucinations.
Sam: I told you
Dean: How do you argue with that?
Sam: I know, it’s a problem.
Dean: I got it why would the devil Halodeck you a whole new life when he could just kick your ass all over the cage?
Sam: Cause, as he puts it..(Lucifer joins in with Sam) you can’t torture someone who has nothing left for you to take away
Lucifer: Very good, Sam.
Dean: OK, fine, but this Malibu dream mansion that he makes for you to take away, is this post-apocalyptic mess?
Lucifer: It had to be a mess, Sam or you wouldn’t believe it was your life.
Dean notices Sam looking at a chair filled with books
Dean: Wait, are you seeing him right now? (Sam nods) You know that he’s not real, right?
Sam: He says the same thing about you.
Dean and Bobby look at each other concerned.
Bobby: I’m going back to work.
And the most compelling scene is Dean trying to get through to Sam in the deserted building on how to determine what is real and what isn’t.
Dean: (grabs Sam’s injured hand) This is real, not a year ago, not in hell. Now–I was with you when you cut it, I sewed it up. Look! (He presses his thumb against the wound, making Sam hiss with pain, which makes Lucifer flicker)
Lucifer: We’ve done a lot more with pain.
Dean: This is different than the crap that’s tearin’ at your walnut, right? (Dean presses harder on Sam’s wound) I’M different, right?
Sam:(snatches his hand away from Dean) Yeah I think so.
Lucifer: Ya sure about that, bunk-buddy?
Dean: Sam? Sam?
Sam presses into his own hand with his thumb, causing Lucifer to flicker.
Lucifer: It doesn’t mean anything
Dean: Hey! I am your flesh and blood brother, okay, I am the only one who can legitimately kick your ass in real time. You got away. We got you out, Sammy.
Lucifer: Sammy, Sammy (Sam presses hard against his wound) I’m the only one who can. . . Dean: Believe in that (Lucifer disappears) believe me–you better make it Stone Number One and build on it, you understand?
Sam: Yeah, yeah, okay.
