So back again to my Tupperware container and I have pulled four new episodes titles and have put my thoughts to them.

What are your thoughts on the following episodes?

Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song?

Is it just your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you?

Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers.

All Hell Breaks Loose Part II

Wow! What scene doesn’t come to mind with this episode?

It was one tug at the heartstrings right after the other. I’m going to limit myself with the first four. Number one we open up with Dean staring, grieve stricken over his deceased brother. Then Bobby arrives with food trying to get Dean to eat and trying to convince him it’s time to bury Sam. Of course Dean wants nothing to do with this. Bobby then tries to get Dean to leave with him as he doesn’t want to leave Dean alone and needs his help. Dean’s reaction is heart breaking.

Bobby:  I just don’t think you should be alone, that’s all. I gotta admit I could use your help.  Something big is going down. End of the world big
Dean:  Well then let it end!!
Bobby:  You don’t mean that?
Dean:  You don’t think so? You don’t think I’ve given enough? You don’t think I’ve paid enough? I’m done with it, all of it. If you know what’s good for you, turn around and get the hell out of here! (pushes Bobby) Go! (Stares at Bobby and realizes the hurt on his face.)  I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Please just go.
Bobby:  You know where I’ll be.

The second one we have Dean’s heartfelt confession to Sam.

You know when we were little and you couldn’t have been more than five, you just started asking questions. How come we didn’t have a mom? Why do we always have to move around? Where did dad go? He’d take off for days at a time. I remember I begged you ‘Quit asking Sammy, man you don’t want to know’ I just wanted you to be a kid just for a little while longer. I always tried to protect you. Keep you safe. Dad didn’t even have to tell me. It was just always my responsibility, you know? It’s like I had one job. That one job and I screwed it up. I blew it. And for that I’m sorry. I guess that’s what I do. I let down the people I love. I let dad down and now I guess I’m just supposed to let you down too? How can I? How am I supposed to live with that? What am I supposed to do? (Dean stands up and yells) What am I suppose to do?

The third is after Dean sells his soul and returns to Sam to find him up and about. He immediately goes to him and hugs him. Our first hug!

The fourth is when Dean and Sam arrive at Bobby’s. Bobby keeps his cool at seeing Sam alive but Sam does notice a sense of awkwardness. Bobby then makes some excuse for Sam to look over his findings while he and Dean go to his car to get more material to look at. Bobby takes Dean to the yard and gives him what for.

Bobby:  You stupid ass! What did you do? (grabs Dean by the coat collar). What did you do?  You made a deal, for Sam, didn’t you? How long did they give ya?”
Dean:  Bobby...
Bobby:  How long?!
Dean:  One year.
Bobby:  Damn it Dean.
Dean:  Which is why we gotta find this yellow eyed son of a bitch! That’s why I’m gonna kill him myself. I mean I got nothing to lose now, right?
Bobby:  I could throttle you!
Dean:  And send me down stairs ahead of schedule?
Bobby:  What is it with you Winchesters, huh? You, your dad, you’re both just itching to throw yourselves down the pit!
Dean:  That’s my point. Dad brought me back Bobby. I’m not even supposed to be here. At least this way something good can come out of it. You know, like my life can mean something.
Bobby:  What and it didn’t before? Have you got that low of an opinion of yourself? Are you that screwed in the head?
Dean:  I couldn’t let him die Bobby. I couldn’t. He’s my brother.
Bobby:  How is your brother gonna feel when he knows you’re going to hell? How’d you feel when you knew your dad went for you?
Dean:  You can’t tell him. You take a shot at me. Whatever you gotta do, but please don’t tell him.
(Bobby places his hand on Dean’s face They then hear a noise in the yard and go to investigate. It’s Ellen. Dean and Ellen embrace each other while Bobby looks around for any danger).

Dark Side of the Moon

This was another episode with many powerful moments. The shooting of Sam and Dean, the fireworks with Dean and a young Sam, a ‘I WUV Hugs’ t-shirt and Mary making sandwiches and cutting off the crust. Seeing Ash, Pamela and the Roadhouse again. And Joshua relaying God’s message telling them to ‘Back off’, that He knows what the Angels are doing, but "He just doesn’t think it’s his problem."

However I think for me the scene that I would have to go with is when Sam and Dean are sent back to the living and conveys God’s message to Cas.

SPN 1069

Cas: Maybe, maybe Joshua was lying
Sam: I don’t think he was. Cas, I’m sorry.
Cas: (Looks up to God) You son of a bitch! I believed in … (Cas reaches into his pocket and pulls out the amulet and looks at it for moment) I don’t need this anymore (tosses it to Dean) It’s worthless.
Sam: Cas wait (hear a fluttering of wings and Cas is gone).  We’ll find another way. We can still stop all of this, Dean. Dean: How?
Sam: I don’t know, but we’ll find it. You and me, we’ll find it.

(Dean grabs his duffle bag and walks to the door, he stops and after a second drops the amulet in the garbage can and walks out, leaving Sam standing watching feeling helpless).

Appointment In Samarra

The scene that stands out the most for me is the last scenes with the talk between Death and Dean. I just love the chemistry between Death and Dean and how their conversations are always so intense.

Death: Today you got a hard look behind the curtain. Wrecking the natural order is not quite fun when you have to mop up the mess. Is it? This is hard for you Dean. You throw away your life because you’ve come to assume that it’ll bounce back into your lap. The human soul is not a rubber ball. It’s vulnerable, impermanent, but stronger than you know and more valuable than you can imagine. So I think you’ve learned something today.
Dean: Wanna know what I think? I think you know that I wouldn’t last a day.
Death: I have no idea what you’re talking about.
Dean: I lost fine, but at least I have the ball to admit that it was rigged from the jump.
Death: Most people speak to me with more respect.
Dean: I didn’t mean..
Death: We’re done here. It’s been lovely but now I’m going to go to hell to get your brother’s soul.
Dean: Why would you do that for me?
Death: I wouldn’t do it for you. You and your brother keep coming back. You’re an affront to the balance of the universe and you cause disruption on a global scale.
Dean: Apologies for that.

And when Death restores Sam’s soul. Seeing Sam begging Dean not to let Death do this as Death nonchalantly tells Sam that it might be a bit itchy and not to scratch as he restores his soul.

Survival of the Fittest

With this episode I have two moments that stand out the most. The first is Sam and Dean burning Bobby’s flask upon his request. Bobby is ‘Jonesing’ to take over another body to kill Dick.

Bobby: Look, I’m done. Go get Dick. But don’t do it because you think it will scratch that itch. Do it because it’s the job. And when it’s your time, Go! (We’re shown burning ambers).  Here’s to running into you guys on the other side, only not too soon alright?

Dean places the flask into the hot coals. We see Sam and Dean facing towards Bobby and then a bright light reflects on their heartbroken faces.

The second is the end scenes showing us the horrible situation that both Sam and Dean have been left in.

With Sam left standing devastated and alone as Dean and Castiel have vanished and Crowley has taken away Kevin leaving with the haunting words:

"Sorry Moose, wish I could help, you certainly have a lot on your plate right now. It looks like you are well and truly on your own."

And then there is Dean being left alone, when Castiel vanishes with growling and glowing red eyes surrounding him in his new home, Purgatory.

One hell of way to send us into a Summer Hiatus.

Dean: I couldn’t let him die Bobby. I couldn’t. He’s my brother.
I have nothing more to add. This is why I watch this show, and why I will continue watching it. Heartwrenching. Just reading those words brought tears to my eyes.
Thanks Karen.

In the Appointment in Samarra quote, Death says he isn't restoring Sam's soul for Dean's sake. When I 1st watched I assumed Death was doing it for Sam. Now I wonder if God wanted him to do it.

Those were really strong scenes of the show. I have more primal instinct to react on some of them. And that is: Slapping Dean, Sam, any other Winchester/good guy. "You are worth something you idjit! and you better believe it" and also "Why can't we all just get along?" But without these scenes... They are powerful and heart wrenching and I am sure they won't be the last.

Love your picks, the whole article. Thank you!

But -- isn't our first hug in "Home" when Dean hugs Sam after Sam is strangled with an electrical cord? I LOVE that hug! Well, I love all hugs.

All Hell Breaks Loose Part II - Definitely Dean talking to Sam’s body. That’s still gut wrenching all these years later. The conversation between Bobby and Dean out in the scrap yard. When Dean, Sam, Bobby and Ellen were studying the maps and notes and discover the Devil’s Trap laid out by rail lines. And lastly, I can’t leave out the scene with Azazel at the end. Ah, Azazel. I know I shouldn’t love him, but I do.

Dark Side of the Moon - The scene that hit me the most was when Dean figured out that the memory they were in was the night Sam left them for Stanford. And he said that it was supposed to be him and Sam against the world. And when Sam assured him it was, it just felt flat. I was in tears at that scene.

Appointment in Samarra - A number of things stand out with this one. Especially the scenes with Dean and Death. “You and your brother are an affront to the balance of the universe and you cause disruption on a global scale.” That threw me for such a loop the first time I heard it. And I loved the scene where Death puts Sam’s soul back in. Jared was superb in that.

Survival of the Fittest - Definitely the two ending scenes with Sam looking around himself all alone, with that horrible, despairing look. And Dean realizing he’s surrounded by the red eyes of things that want to kill him, with vague silhouettes running through the background. And any scene with Kevin.

When Dean threw the amulet away and in essense the boys' realtionship. I dont think they ever recovered.

We sure need a brother hug right about now don't we.
# Lilah_Kane 2014-04-07 12:21
We sure do.

Appointment in Samarra when Souless Sam is tied to the cot and he and Dean are staring at each other. Dean is looking at someone who he has to kill. It's not Sam but after he kills him, besides the fact that Sam's soul will be stuck, tortured for eternity in hell, there will never be a Sam. I always thought in that moment Dean was thinking he would eat a bullet after killing his brother. That was the moment that always got to me.

Great tribute to some great episodes. Dean's talk over his brothers dead body in All hell Breaks Loose Part 2 is still one of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever. One scene you did not mention for that episode was Dean making the deal with the crossroad demon. Watching him start at 10 years, then go all the way down and agree to 1 was so sad. He was the picture of desperate, and Ackles conveyed that desperation. I got the impression he would have agreed to a John Winchester deal and died on the spot if that was the only way to save his brother.

Regarding Dark Side of the Moon - I know the writers and actors have said it does not matter, but I am still mad Dean threw away the one gift his brother gave him as a child that he kept his whole life. I then held out hope that when we finally saw Sam's room in the bunker, he would have it, if he had picked it up out of the trash, and we would see the amulet in Sam's room. I do not want Dean or Sam to wear it - just want to know they have that one thing from their childhood together - in addition to the Impala, of course. Anyway, that scene kind of ruins that whole episode for me. The only parts of the episode I enjoy is a Dean telling the hunters when he comes back, he is gonna be pissed and the fireworks scene.

Hi Karen, thanks for this. I always enjoy the trips down memory line. AHBL (both actually) are two of my favorites. The gut wrenching scene of Sam getting stabbed in the back:( and Dean's complete devastation is what set up events in pt. 2. Pt. 2 is filled with many emotional moments. My favorite scene is the hug. After the "no chick flick moments" comment I was delighted to see that hug and the look on Dean's face when he came through the door. Sam's almost immediate suspicions and the confrontation at the Impala at the end was just beautiful, as was the "we got work to do".

The DSOTM is also a favorite. The fireworks scene was lovely. Dean's disillusionment and his (possibly angel manipulated) feeling that Sam did not include him in any of his 'greatest hit's' coupled with the idea that God didn't want to help them was what led to the throwing away of the amulet IMO. I think it was an impulsive act due to his frame of mind. I hope to see the amulet again. I think it still has much meaning for him. I really hope Sam picked it out of the trash or Dean returned and got it. That's just me!

AIS- I too enjoy the scenes with Dean and Death. One of the few characters who can intimidate Dean (besides Ellen, Bobby, and early fierce Cas).

SOTF- The flask burning scene was sad and beautifully shot. I still miss Bobby :) I am not crazy about the last scenes of S7 because it let to the first part of S8 which I will never like because of the unflattering light shone on both the guys and the conflict it caused between the guys and within the fandom!

One hoped that Sam retrieved the amulet from the basket and would soon remember what it represented. but alas by his current reaction to Dean, that childhood symbol is just a memory as is the vision of him following Dean off the roof as children. These are great scenes you have chosen.

Hi Sylvie
Like you it's the moments like these that keeps the love I have for these two characters so strong.

Hi Mary9930
You've brought up an interesting thought. I always figured that Death honoured the agreement because even though Dean didn't fulfil it he did learn something from the experience.
However it could very well be because he was doing it under Gods request.

Hi Lilah_Kane
Oh I agree I'm sure we will continue to get more of these powerful and heart wrenching scenes. I do love them. However there have been times I just want to give their heads a shake and tell them that they are both worthy and deserve to live and that they need to start talking and listening to each other.

Hi Love2boys.
I always loved that little hug he gives Sam, too. I guess because it was such a quick squeeze I never took it as full hug. But you're right, it was the first hug.

Hi SecretWillow

AHBL2- Fred Lane was a fantastic Azazel (YED), he was both witty and creepy. That view of the bullet shooting out of the gun and hitting Azazel (YED) was an epic moment.

DSOTM- Definitely that moment was so sad. I really felt for both of them. When Dean asks what memory was this and Sam gives a I don't know let's get going, because he did know and knew this was going to hurt Dean. Dean's face when he does realise what it was, it just breaks your heart.

Hi Amyh
With how much that amulet had meant to Dean and what it represented to the relationship of the brother, to throw it away was really heartbreaking. I wonder if Sam's memories had of been good memories with Dean in them, Dean would have kept the amulet. The look on Sam's face, he looked so helpless. I still believe Sam picked it up and has it stored within his things.

Hi Cheryl42
That was a very intense moment. I too feel, Dean would have eaten a bullet, if he had been forced to kill Sam.

Hi Grace232
AHBL2 - I agree it was sad to see Dean being brought down to one year. He was so desperate. I too believed he would have taken immediate death to save Sam.

DSOTM - Dean can be quite scary with his "You're so dead" expression he gives when he's really pissed. I bet those hunters haven't slept well since that moment.

Hi Leah

AHBL2 - The end with Sam getting Dean to admit he made a deal and the "We've got work to do" just added to the endless memorable moments to this episode.

DSOTM - I tend to believe that Zack had manipulated some or all of the memories, just to try and force the tension between the brothers. I also believe Sam retrieved the amulet and has stored it in a safe place.

SOTF - I miss Bobby too. The episode to me was a good one. The events that took place in Season 8 did leave me with some torn feelings.
I believe they should have given us Sam's story from the time he left the building to when he first met Amelia. Even a flashback episode like they did in 'I know what you did last summer.' At least we would have had a better understanding as to why he didn't look, instead of leaving us to fill in all the blanks.
Hi Debbab
As long as they never prove otherwise I will hold onto the belief that Sam does have the amulet. :)

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and comments. Sorry for the delay, I've been having problems with loading of the comments.
