Alice's Top 10 list, Top 10 Supernatural Opening Teasers, inspired me to dust off one of the lists I had sitting around.  This is my Top 10 list of my favorite line readings from season 1.  I'm not talking about favorite quotes, but the way the actor said the line.  Favorite quotes would be a very different, very difficult list to write!  Hopefully, I can explain a little more about why I liked each line besides just saying "I liked the way they said that!"  So here we go!

Honorable Mention

"Poltergeist? I love that movie!"  Random guy, "Phantom Traveler."

pastedGraphic.pdf

I love how randomly this was just thrown in.  And in a way, I'm kind of sad that the show hasn't ever called the guys on having all these public conversations about supernatural things in public places.  Because you just know people overhear things all the time.

10.

"Well, no offense, but your alarms are about as useful as boobs on a man". Landlady, "Shadow"

pastedGraphic_1.pdf

I really did not expect this line from the landlady, but it was hilariously snarky.  I liked her.  I bet she was a trip to have as a landlady.

9.

"You know who starts sentences with "˜truth is?' Liars"  Joe White Tree , "Bugs".

pastedGraphic_2.pdf

Oh, snap, Joe White Tree!  He really put Dean in his place with this line.

8.

"Take him away, officer, he kills with the power of his mind!"  Dean, "Nightmare"

pastedGraphic_3.pdf

Classic Dean snark here.  This line reading was just dripping with sarcasm, wasn't it?  Loved it.  He was still pretty freaked about Sam's visions, and it kind of showed here.

7.

"Want to have fun? Go ahead. I'm a little tied up right now."  Sam, "Shadow"

pastedGraphic_4.pdf

Meg really was the queen of snarky and amazing line readings, but Sam gave as good as he got in this scene.  I especially liked how he said the "I'm a little tied up right now" part, kind of quick and whispered at her.

6.

"Come on. Really? Man."  Dean, "Phantom Traveler"

pastedGraphic_5.pdf

Oh, he's so scaredy!  Poor scaredy Dean.  He sounds so exasperated at this point.  And it was pretty funny to learn that Dean could hunt all manners of creatures with no problems but flying turned him into jello.

5.

"Oh, that's right. I did. Still, two wrongs don't make a right."  YED!John, "Devil's Trap"

pastedGraphic_6.pdf

This is my favorite Jeffrey Dean Morgan line reading ever.  Wow, was it mean and nasty and fantastic.  I mean, he really twists the knife here.  The "two wrongs" part is amazing.

4.

"That was funny, John.  We're going to flay the skin from your bones, but that was funny."  Meg, "Salvation"

pastedGraphic_7.pdf

Meg was just the queen of snark.  There were tons of lines to choose from because her delivery after the demon reveal was just brilliant.  But this was my favorite one.  She's snarky and menacing all in one.

3.

"Oh, my god!  That painting looks so good."  Sam, "Provenance"

pastedGraphic_8.pdf

This makes me laugh every time I hear it.  Sam is rightfully surprised to see that hideous painting again after he and Dean burned it up.  He's just so caught off guard, and watching him try to lie his way through the situation is funny.

2.

"Come on, Dean."  Dean, "Provenance"

pastedGraphic_9.pdf

This part also makes me laugh and laugh because seriously, Dean was using a gun as a hammer.  The first time I saw this episode, I was like, "Dean, just shoot the glass!"  So I loved it when he very rightfully told himself to wake the hell up and use the gun as a gun.  Really funny stuff.

1.

"Saving people, hunting things.  The family business."  Dean, "Wendigo"

pastedGraphic_10.pdf

Dean was so earnest when he said that, like earnestness alone would convince his brother.  Plus, this pretty much became the motto of the show for a while and turned up in every recap ever in season 1.  So, we got to hear it every episode!  Yay!

What do you think?  Do you agree with my choices or did I neglect some of your favorites?  There were a lot of fun lines to choose from, so this was more difficult than I anticipated.

Great list! My favorite comes from Sam in Asylum. When he's asked by Katherine how do they know all this ghost stuff, Sam answers it's their job. "Why would anyone want to do a job like that?" Sam's answer... "I had a crappy guidance counselor."

Your Honorable Mention has a special place in my heart. Mostly because I really do LOVE that movie. One of my favorite season 1 quotes is from Dead In The Water. Andrea Barr says to Dean "Must be hard, with your sense of direction. Never being able to find your way to a decent pick-up line." I love this quote because she kinda put Dean in his place.

This was fun. I agree with your number one.

How about from 'Scarecrow', when Sam confesses to stealing a car to come rescue Dean, and Dean says 'Haha! That’s my boy!'. He is so proud of his baby brother.

I also like from 'Faith', Dean is lying in the hospital bed, near death but as we all know Dean laughs in the face of death: 'that fabric softener teddy bear. Oh, I’m gonna hunt that little bitch down'.

One more from Dean, in 'the Benders', he is tied up and hears a gun shot, 'you hurt my brother, I’ll kill you, I swear. I’ll kill you all. I will kill you all'. You hurt Sam, you got one pissed off Dean to deal with. (has anyone heard from Roy and Walt lately?)

My favorite line from season 1 is most definitely "Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole." I use that excuse every time my little sister rides in the car with me.

These are fantastic! You've included about all my favorite S1 readings. I'd like to include, from the pilot, Mary's "Ok" when YED shushed her and she thought it was John. There was so much past/relationsh ip/everyday moment conveyed in that one little word. Love it!

I love lists. And this is a goody. You picked so many of the lines I love I couldn't even tell you witch one of them my favourite is. But one of my favourite lines coming from one of the boys is Alices pick : I had a crappy guidance counselor.

Hi Ardeospina
This is great! It got me all reminiscent of season one.

I loved the Poltergeist comment as well.

I also loved in Home, when Missouri warns Dean if he puts his foot on her coffee table she’s going to whack him with a spoon. And poor Dean “I didn’t do anything.” “You were thinking it.”

And in the Benders, when Dean’s tied up and comments “Oh, eat me! No, no, no, wait, wait, you actually might.”

This is a great list. These are all fun lines. And totally agree with #1. That is indeed the best.

A couple great lines I always think of is 1) in Jump the Shark, Dean is visiting the mausoleum with the director and he asks Dean if he has given it any thought where he would like to spend eternity and Dean counters back "All the damn time." Just the mention of that question and the fact that Dean and Sam face death every day. That all just strikes me as funny.

The second one that just brings a big smile to my face is the whole beginning sequence in '99 Problems.' After Dean and Sam are saved from the demons by the locals they introduce themselves and then tell Dean and Sam, of all people, "I hate to tell you this, but those were demons and this is the Apocalypse. So, buckle up." From Dean's "peachy" to buckle up. You just gotta smile at the irony of it all.

Arde, you know I am a total geek for lists and quotes but I think you did the impossible here managing to narrow this down to just 10 ( OK 11 but I will forgive you ).
Just the first one from Phantom Traveler brought 2 more to mind straight away `Sam, this plane is going to crash so stop treating me like I`m friggin` four`, and `Stow the touchy, feely, self help yoga crap it`s not helping` As Dany points out there is just something about scared Dean.
I also agree with Karen about Missouri and practically everything she said could have been included for me but especially `Forgive this boy, he means well, he`s just not the sharpest tool in the shed` and When she tells Dean to `Get the mop, and don`t cuss at me boy! Also loved the entire scene from The Benders , after all Dean was right `It`s not nice to marry your sister`
I should like to give an honourable mention to Michael in Something Wicked , Two Queens `Yeah, I bet!` And I also loved Sams line to Sarah as they dug up the grave `Still think I`m a catch?`
I will now shut up as I could go on and on and on. You have excellent self control to discipline your self to do this and I hope that 2, 3, 4, and 5 are on the way?? Thanks Ju

That was great Arde! And also all the ones posted above
by everyone else!

Reminds me why I love Season 1 so very much.

Hope you do this for all the seasons? Please?

Yay, these really made me smile!
I love scared-to-fly Dean too, perhaps because I feel his pain (although I'm not quite as nervous as he is on a plane!)
This show has so many great lines!

Oh, Flamey, I am late to this, oh, my! I love this list! Funny reminder of a great, great season.

Some of my favourite lines are those, repeating some of the comments above.
‘when I told dad I was scared of the thing in my closet, he gave me a .45’
And Andrea putting Dean down in ‘Dead in the Water’: ‘Must be hard with your sense of direction never being able to find your way to a decent pick up line.’
And Missouri about Dean:’He means well, he’s just not the sharpest tool in the shed’, oh, so lovely, sweet boy… And of course: ‘Demons I get, people are just crazy’.
Sam’s ‘ This isn’t exactly the first grave we dug. Still think I’m a catch?’ from Provenance. And ‘Sam, marry that girl.’ Hell, yes.
I’m sure there are more, but I can ‘t think of any at this moment… Great thing, dear. Thanks! Jas
