Some things have changed since I wrote the first article. For example, characters that were left out have become more important and deserve to be added. Some of them might not get another chance to surprise us as characters while others I hope have several surprises left in them. I will start the article with the same words as before because they are as fitting now as they were then. So, on with the show!
I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass. — Maya Angelou

I should probably start at the beginning to explain why I wanted to make this article. First, Supernatural has lots of good, women characters. Second, I wanted to walk down memory lane to remind us about those that we may have forgotten.
A few have passed away but a few are still alive and kicking. Usually in Supernatural, men, women, children and even animals don't 'live to see another day'. If they do, then they lose or have lost a family member. The rule is that everybody dies, even the main cast. I am happy that some survive but sad when some are lost. If you make it out alive in a Supernatural episode, then that is already a miracle.
Strenght comes in many ways, whether it is a mother's, sister's or daughters love for one another or strength to go against all odds and do the right thing no matter what the cost might be. Strength could also be to live on when they are struck by great grief or loss and they feel they can't. These women did that and more.
What is my prefered Kick-ass woman you ask? You might say that I don't have the usual taste in them. The ones I prefer are strong in body and mind and they are formidable fighters. My idols are Ellen Ripley (Aliens), Sarah Connor (Terminator), Xena (Xena the Warrior Princess), Brienne of Tarth (Game of Thrones) for example. So you might see a resemblance for that taste on my Supernatural list. Some of them are clear choices that we all remember and some of them not so much.
Now, let's start with the definition of Kick-ass as described by The Dictionary of American Slang:
Kick-ass
adjective, Slang.
1. strikingly or overwhelmingly tough, aggressive, powerful, or effective:
Slang definitions & phrases for kick-ass
kick-ass, adjective, (also kick-butt or kick-yer-ass) Rough; powerful; rough-ass, tough: that kick-ass attitude/ gave up its last drop of kick-ass Gewurztraminer/ the only team without a kick-butt run blocker on their line
I divided the women into 3 categories. At the end of the article is my choice for #1 the Kick-ass winner.

1. Recently deceased
Celeste Middleton, Charlene "Charlie" Bradbury *Felicia Day
First, she was introduced to us as a geek that was working for Dick Roman. Because of that she was introduced to Sam and Dean and the hunting life. She was searching for adventure and her own place in the world. The Winchesters grew to be her brothers. She had her adventure, met some girls and with her last act she helped her non-blood brothers find the answer to 'decurse' the MoC. If truth be told, her last sacrifice and the fact that she died helping the two she regarded as family made me choose her for this list. So Charlie grew on me and I am so sad she is gone. She meant a lot to the boys.
"Saving people, hunting things, the family business? I am down. But I was raised on Tolkien, man. I mean, where is all this? Where are my White Walkers and my volcano and magic ring to throw in the damn thing? Where's my quest? – 9.04 Slumber PartyKnown status: Deceased

Deputy Jenna Nickerson *Laci J. Mailey
We only had her for two episodes but she made a good impression on me right from the start. What is with this show and its female cops? What ever it is, I hope it continues. She was strong through crisis and when she was being patched up. Even when she knew nothing about raising kids, she decided to take the newborn under her wing. Unfortunately her time with us didn't last long. I am sad she needed to die along with her grandmother.
"This job is supposed to be saving people." – 11.01 Out of the DarknessKnown status: Deceased

Also played: Emily in 7.22 There Will Be Blood.
Hannah *Erica Carroll, Lee Majdoub (10.17 & 11.02)
It is hard to say when Hannah grew on me but when "she" finally died I noticed that I did mourn her passing. She helped Castiel and became the ruler of the angels. She could keep the peace for a while, but not until she chose to release the vessel and understood humans did I really like her. Even if angels don't have gender, I refer her as female because of her vessel. Also, like Castiel she is one of the few angels that has had both gender vessels and for some reason I really like that. Hannah's last act like we know was to defend Cas from the other angels and unfortunately she lost her life in that battle.
"Being on Earth, working with you. I felt things, human things -- passions, hungers. To shower, feel water on my skin, to get closer to you. But all of that was nothing compared to what I felt when I saw him. Her husband, his anger and his grief. Caroline was inside me screaming out for him, for her life back. These feelings they aren't for me, for us. They belong to her. I know it's time to step aside... Goodbye Castiel." – 10.07 Girls, Girls, GirlsKnown status: Deceased

Amelia Novak *Wynn Everett (4.20), Leisha Hailey (10.20)
All she wanted to do was to get her family back together. She was searching for Cas but because she was captured, her daughter was alone in the wind. Her daughter meant the most to her and she died protecting her family. Also she hung on for many years while her life/soul were being sucked out of her. Now, she is at peace.

Suzie *Brenda Bakke, Erika-Shaye Gair (Young Suzie)
We knew her only for one episode but still she made quite an impression on me. I mean this lady survived and guarded the machine from people that killed her whole family. She tried to do that for the Winchesters too when Sam opened the box but she didn't get them out in time. The guilt that happened was too great for her, so she fell to the vision that the wretched machine gave her.

2. New arrivals
Alex Jones (Annie Jones) *Katherine Ramdeen
Even if she is young in life, she has already been through more than most of her elders have. Kidnapped when very young, raised by a vampire family - the fact that that is the only family she will remember is already sad. Her feeding her family with her own body and being a lure would make anyone lose their mind. Still, she breaks free in the end and does the right thing. She saved Jody because she knew what is right and what is wrong. She saw that Jody was genuine and her fake family was not.

Claire Novak *Sydney Imbeau, Kathryn Love Newton
I wasn't very fond of her when she first reappeared in Supernatural but like all things she is heading to a good path. When we first met Claire, she was very young but still she said yes to a being that promised to save her parents. She didn't know this "being" and Castiel saved her parents, only to take her father away again. Claire, like Cas, has walked a long way from that moment and it turned Claire angry and rebellious but she still decided to find her mother. She thought she wanted to tell her like it is but that was a cover -s he really did want to find her mother. The Winchesters gave her tips for the hunting life and she struck down the being that killed her mother. I hope her path is growing now that she is with Jody. Her first and last episodes were her best.

Dorothy Baum *Tiio Horn
I might be shallow with this one but all I can say is: female Indiana Jones. What is there not to like? She is wise and strong and she has a motorcycle. Also she is pretty good with fighting monsters and kicking ass. Also, she was from a time when women needed to show what they are worth, even if that is being silly and rebellious. It was very different time from ours.
"Wasted my time with his words. And I'd appreciate it if you didn't do the same. Now, I have tried cutting off her head, burning her, dousing her with holy water. All she did was laugh. Nothing I know of can kill her. So I'm here as a last resort. I was hoping you stiffs have a way to kill someone from Oz." – 9.04 Slumber PartyKnown status: Alive and kicking
Seen: 9.04 Slumber Party
Julia Wilkinson *Jenny O'Hara, Gabrielle Giraud (Young Sister Julia)
If you are facing the greatest evil you have ever known, it is only fair that it makes you afraid. She needed to carry the burden of a horrible secret but when the same was happening again she couldn't stand still. So, she helped Sam Winchester solve the case with her knowledge and made things right for others and for herself.
"If it's for a date, sorry. I never see anyone under 65. Too much drama." – 9.17 Mother's Little HelperKnown status: Alive and kicking
Seen: 9.17 Mother's Little Helper
Catlin *Chelsea Hobbs
She had a very little role also but she also made things right with her last decision. Rowena killed her friend and thought nothing about it. Catlin would have none of it and she slugged Rowena and ran. At the start, she was also rebellious against the demon pimp creeps. Hopefully she is alive and well and her life has turned better.

2. Ladies with a Capital "L"

Amara *Emily Swallow, Gracyn Shinyei (Young Amara), Yasmeene Lily-elle Ball (Tween Amara), Samantha Isler (Teenage Amara)
People have different opinions what they like and don't like. For me the story of the Darkness and Amara has been interesting from the start. As I am a graphic designer that is interested in history, mythology, theology, architecting and cloth designing, I envision her like a goddess. I know she has not been portrayed to be a goddess but her brother is God and she is something that the human kind has never seen. Not knowing a better word for her, she is a goddess in my book. She took a human vessel which means she might start to know feelings. She grew up fast from a baby to a grown woman and it shows in her clothes and how she looks. Amara needed to take all the information in. She had a huge book to study and she bloomed to an all powerful goddess.
The goddesses have been shown the same throughout all of Supernatural - powerful and not caring about humans. In a way, Amara does seem to care, though, and her goddess dress style is simpler implying that she is that powerful - she could wipe out the other goddesses with a flick of her wrist. I talked about her dressing style more in here with examples. Amara doesn't need to pretend anything, but still she is really a child in how she sees the world and her brother. She is a kick-ass woman just because she is the most powerful being after God or hell, maybe even an equal. Maybe the Winchesters need to save the vessel and Amara turns back to a baby. How they will defeat the Darkness and save the innocent vessel is the main question...or is that even how the story ends?
"Good, evil, Heaven, Hell, people. It all seems so unimportant." – 11.03 The Bad Seed"Known status: Alive and kicking

Billie *Lisa Berry
I can't even describe how remarkable Billie's character was in my eyes. She had the balls to get Sam scared, which made the viewer scared for the Winchesters. It is for sure now that they better not die because that outcome will be the end of them. Billie didn't need to say much to make a statement or show her strength. She just is. Did I mention she has an incredible singing voice too? Well, she has. Also the actress that played her is a Supernatural fan and watches the show too (little backround knowledge for you there). I do hope we see more of her and she keeps her cool. It takes a lot to make such a big impression on the fandom by only being in one episode. Her entrance was almost as memorable as the one for Death.
"O death, o death, o death won't you spare me over another year? Oh, what is this that I can't see with ice-cold hands taking hold of me? When God is gone and the devil takes hold who'll have mercy on your soul?”Known status: Alive and kicking
"You and Dean . . . Dying and coming back again and again. The old death thought it was funny. But now there's one hard, fast rule in this universe. What lives . . . dies. So the next time you or your brother bite it, well, you're not going to Heaven . . . Or Hell. One of us -- and, Lord, I hope it's me -- we're gonna make a mistake and toss you out into the Empty. And nothing comes back from that. I know you're dying. I can feel it. You're unclean in the biblical sense. So I'll be seeing you again, Sam . . . Seeing you real soon. Name's Billie, by the way." – 11.02 Form and Void
Seen: 11.02 Form and Void

Josie Sands *Alaina Huffman
We didn't see much of the real Josie but the little time we could spend with her she had wit, snark and she was full of heart. She only wanted to do the right thing and in my eyes she was more of a hunter than a Woman of Letters. She also wanted to save her co-worker that had a wife and family from the possession. Little did she know that her decission would still result in him being killed. That doesn't make her sacrifice mean any less. Alaina was great both as Josie and Abaddon so I hope we might see Josie again in flashbacks or something else.

ladies of spn | amen made by: Sam Pajon
Amen by Halestorm
A fire’s gotta burn
The world is gonna turn
A rain has gotta fall
Fate is gonna call
But I just keep on breathing
Long as my heart is beating
Someone's gotta hate
It's never gonna change
Gets harder everyday
This is one hell of a place
Keep your heart from freezing
To keep yourself believing
But I won't run
I'm not afraid
I'll look em in the eye
Gonna hear me say
It's...
My life
My love
My sex
My drug
My lust
My god it ain't no sin
Can I get it
Can I get an Amen
My grace
My church
My pain
My tears
My hurt
My god, I'll say it again
Can I get it
Can I get an Amen
Life has gotta kill
Faith is gonna blind
Hope is gonna fade
The truth is gonna lie
Sometimes there's no reason
To justify the meaning
But I won't run
I'm not ashamed
It's gonna take more than this for me to break
My life
My love
My sex
My drug
My lust
My god it ain't no sin
Can I get it?
Can I get an Amen?
My grace
My church
My pain
My tears
My hurt
My god, I'll say it again
Can I get it?
Can I get an Amen?
My life, my love, my sex, my drug
My lust...
My life
My love
My sex
My drug
My lust
My god it ain't no sin
Can I get it?
Can I get an Amen?
My grace
My church
My pain

Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert
County road 233, under my feet
Nothin' on this white rock but little ole me
I've got two miles 'til he makes bail
And if I'm right we're headed straight for hell
I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm gonna show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead
Well, it's half past ten, another six pack in
And I can feel the rumble like a cold black wind
He pulls in the drive, the gravel flies
He don't know what's waiting here this time
Hey! I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm gonna show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead
His fist is big but my gun's bigger
He'll find out when I pull the trigger
I'm goin' home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight well now he's got one
And he ain't seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don't that sound like a real man
I'm gonna show him what little girls are made of

One time guests should not qualify, nor should bit-players (such as the angel Rachel in season 6, and that demon Sam & Ruby tortured for blood that would eat babies). Otherwise, the category is too wide open and subjective.
Thanks for reading.
