Here's what we know about this year's event!

Registration for GISHWHES will be closing July 24, 2017. GISHWHES will be held from August 5, 2017 to August 12, 2017.

What is GISHWHES? First it's an acronym for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, but it's more than that. Misha Collins explains

GISHWHES had a modest start. In 2010 Misha Collins asked his fans to help Supernatural win the People's Choice Award. In return, he would get Warner Brothers to give him a Rhino and he would send a piece of that Rhino to all his followers. When Supernatural won the award Misha made good on his promise and tweeted instructions on how to redeem the Rhino pieces. From the GISHWHES site.

January 2011

Those who followed Misha’s instructions receive a puzzle piece and a letter instructing them to find the other members of their team online and discover the email address that was written on the back of the puzzle.

February 12, 2011

An email is sent to all participants with an item list and rules for the Rhino Scavenger Hunt.

February 18, 2011

Rhino Hunt Ends at 2:27 pm, PST

March 6, 2011

Email sent announcing Team 3 as the winner, and teasing a future hunt (that will later be Gishwhes)

The next year saw the first GISHWHES hunt. In August of 2011, Misha first mentioned GISHWHES. In September he established the GISHWHES website and began the registration process. The hunt began on November 20 and ended on November 29. GISHWHES then became an annual event. It has grown every year since its inception, breaking records as the largest scavenger hunt of its kind, and  going from 6,000 participants in 2011 to 55,000 participants in 2016.

This year's event has been covered in major media outlets!

Yahoo Finance published a five part article starting here Inside the World's Greatest Scavenger Hunt,

As the deadline for registration draws near, Supernatural cast members are adding incentives to join the hunt by participating in G-Dates. What are G-Dates?

Are you single and looking for a good time?
Does “gishwhes” frighten and confuse all your friends?
Does the notion of boredom irritate you with every fiber of your being?
Deep down, have you always been yearning for some crazy 14-on-1 action with a group that make you feel all giggly and warm …people you can really connect with?

Well, look no further, Gishers! gishwhes is proud to announce G-Date, a semi-platonic service for solo gishwhes participants looking for a good time! With G-Date you have the chance to play on the team of one of six extraordinary celebrity team captains. You know them well already from their work on screen and stage, but you’ve never known them like this! Each of these superstars is hot to trot, ready for anything and looking for 10 special someones to fill out each of their respective gishwhes teams.

Stars who are forming teams include Ruth Connell (Rowena), Osric Chau (Kevin Tran), Emily Swallow (Amara), Alaina Huffman (Abbadon), and Kim Rhodes (Jody Mills) and Briana Buckmaster (Donna Hanscum)

If you are chronically ill, there is a team for you, and a potential scholarship.

In addition to having a great time, GISHWHES awards prizes! From the GISHWHES site

Many people play gishwhes just for the fun, exciting experience and don’t compete for the whole week; but for those with an eye on the prize, in addition to a bunch of cool runner-up prizes, our Grand Prize winning team will go on an all-expense paid trip somewhere around the world with the Hunt’s founder, actor Misha Collins. Yes, I’m ready for Hawaii!

If you need one more reason to register this year, this announcement may seal the deal. From Nerds and Beyond GISHWHES to End After This Year.

Misha's announcement does say the last year AS WE KNOW IT, so next year we may have a whole new venture.

So whether it's for the fun of a scavenger hunt, or to win great prizes, or just to be part of what may be the last GISHWHES, there is no better time to join GISHWHES than now! If you've been a GISH-er before, we'd love to hear your stories! If you can't decide if you want to join in this year, post your questions or concerns and maybe experienced hunters can help you out! Also let us know if you team is looking for more members. Maybe a #WFBFamily member can be encouraged to join!

 UPDATES:

Nerds and Beyond: What do you think your character on Supernatural would bring to a GISHWHES team?

Emily: If Amara were playing Gishwhes, she’d definitely be in it to win it. I’m not sure she’s much of a team player…she would likely smite anyone on her team who slowed them down. And if she had been on the team going to Iceland, I think she would have pouted a LOT. After all, she already spent a ton of time in a hole in the ground thanks to Chuck, and then she was hanging out in some dank dark silo with Rowena…the Hawaii prize would be MUCH more to her liking.
