What’s Your Supernatural Scene #21
So once again I have visited my Tupperware container and have pulled four new episodes titles and have put my thoughts to them. What are your thoughts on the following episodes? Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song? And why? It is your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you? Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers?
Fresh Blood
I have three moments with this episode. The first is Sam killing Gordon with the barbed wire. The hatred on Sam’s face as he was killing Gordon was a little frightening, however the look of disbelief once he realizes what he did just tugged at my heart. He looked both shocked and scared.
Dean: Sam stay here.
Sam: What? Where are you going now?
Dean: I’m going after Gordon.
Sam: What?
Dean: Yeah, you heard me.
Sam: Well not alone you’re not.
Dean: Sam I don’t need you to sign me a permission slip, okay? He’s after you not me and he’s turbocharged. I want you to stay out of harm’s way. I’ll take care of it.
Sam: Well Dean you’re not going by yourself. You’re gonna get killed.
Dean: Just another day at the office. A massively dangerous day at the office.
Sam: So uh, you’re the guy with nothing to lose now? Oh let me guess..because, uh, it’s because you’re already dead, right?
Dean: If the shoe fits.
Sam: You know man, I’m sick and tired of your stupid kamikaze trip.
Dean: Whoa, whoa. Kamikaze? I’m more like a ninja.
Sam: That’s not funny.
Dean: It’s a little funny.
Sam: No, It’s not.
Dean: What do you want me to do, Sam, huh? Sit around all day, writing sad poems about how I’m gonna die? You know what? I’ve got one. See what rhymes with “Shut up Sam?”
Sam: Dude, drop the attitude, Dean. Quit turning everything into a punch line. And you know something else? Stop trying to act like you’re not afraid.
Dean: I’m not.
Sam: You’re lying and you may as well drop it because I can see right through you.
Dean: You got no idea what you’re talking about.
Sam: Yeah I do. You’re scared, Dean. You’re scared because your year’s running out and you’re still going to hell and you’re freaked.
Dean: And how do you know that?
Sam: Because I know you!
Dean: Really?
Sam: Yeah because I’ve been following you around my entire life! I mean I’ve been looking up to you since I was four, Dean, studying you, trying to be just like my big brother, so yeah I know you, better than anyone else in the entire world. And THIS is exactly how you act when you’re terrified. And I mean, I can’t blame you, it’s just….
Dean: What?
Sam: It’s just I wish you would drop the show and be my big brother again, ’cause. . .just ’cause.” Dean: All right, we’ll hole up.
The third is the last scene when Dean gives Sam a lesson in mechanics.
I will always be a sap for those brotherly moments.
Lucifer Rising
The Curious Case Of Dean Winchester
I really enjoyed this episode. I loved the “Grumpy old Men” scenes with Bobby and older Dean. Chad Everett played him to a tee.
The face on Sam when Dean tells him that Patrick gave him the Clap. Dean’s Cheshire cat smile and his little happy dance when he gets returned to his proper age. However the scene that really stood out was Dean and Bobby’s heart to heart at the end.
Bobby: Well, I guess we can get the van loaded.
Dean: (Clears throat) I shouldn’t have called you an idiot.
Bobby: Which time?
Dean: I’m sorry. I mean I actually..I get it. Getting old ain’t a bachelor party, and dealing with the crap you gotta deal with..
Bobby: Don’t you go on pity patrol.
Dean: I’m not. I’m not. I’m just, I’m saying if I was in your shoes..
Bobby: You’d never stop complaining.
Dean: Fair enough. You’re not useless Bobby.
Bobby: Okay. Good talk.
Dean: Whoa, wait a minute. Listen to me. (Dean sits on a chair facing Bobby). You don’t stop being a soldier because you got wounded in battle. Okay? No matter what shape you’re in, bottom line is, you’re family. Now I don’t know if you noticed, but me and Sam, we don’t have much left. I can’t do this without you. I can’t. So don’t you dare think about checking out. I don’t want to hear that again.
Bobby: Okay.
Dean: Okay. Good.
Bobby: Thanks. Now are we done feeling our feelings? Because I’d like to get out of this room before we both start growing lady parts.
Dean: Yeah, we’re done. (Dean gets up grabs his stuff, thinks about taking his half eaten burger but changes his mind) Let’s go Ironsides.
Bobby: Oh that one’s sticking, huh?
Like A Virgin
I have two scenes that stand out for me. The first is Dean trying to get the sword from the stone. The way he first approaches it all confident that he can retrieve the sword with no problem. But when the sword doesn’t budge, the antics after words had me laughing. I love after he blows up the stone and pulls out the blade and it broken, the expression on both Dean and Dr. Visyak’s faces is priceless.
The second of course being the sap that I am is when Sam wakes up from being re-united with his soul. Bobby is sitting at his desk and Dean comes in and pulls up a chair. Bobby pours them both a drink.
Bobby: Like my daddy always said, just because it kills your liver don’t mean it ain’t medicine. Sam still asleep?
Dean: Yeah
Bobby: He’ll wake up.
Dean: Yeah.
Bobby: Dean, he’s been through how much? Somehow, he always bounces back.
Dean: He’s never been through this. (He notes a newspaper article Bobby’s looking at) Job? Bobby: Might be.
Dean: Can I help? Send me to the library? Anything?
Bobby: Couple goes up in a light plane. Wreckage was just found in the woods.
Dean: Couple of Buddy Holly’s doesn’t really seem like “News of the Weird”
Bobby: Pilot was found 17 miles away, flambeed. Girl’s just gone, no body, no nothin’.
Dean: Okay, I’m not changin’ the channel.
Sam: Dean? (Sam is standing behind him. Bobby stares up at him surprised)
Dean: Sam? (Dean stands up facing towards him) Are you..
(Sam walks quickly to Dean and embraces him in a tight hug. Dean takes a moment before embracing him back. After a few seconds Sam holds him away, looks at him, smiles, he then looks over to Bobby and give him a hug hug)
Bobby: Good to see you (Bobby is a little uneasy)
Sam: Wait, I saw you, I felt Lucifer snap your neck.
Bobby: Well, Cas, kind of..
Sam: Cas is alive?
Dean: Yeah, Cas is fine. Sam, are you Okay?
Sam: Actually, I’m starving.
What are your favorite scenes from these episodes?
Nice Tupperware pull, Karen. I loved all those same scenes, either for their intensity or emotional impact.
Hi, Karen,
It’s the brother moments that will get me every time, but occasionally a little character insight sneaks in. Fresh Blood: I love the scene at the motel room with the brothers. I call it the “just ’cause” scene. love it! And that ending, oh the simple beauty of that ending. I also enjoy the scene when the brothers come upon the two vampires that Gordon killed and the one that was turning them talks about loss and hell. It’s a parallel to what Dean is going through mentally and it’s clear that it has an impact on Dean.
For Lucifer Rising, I love the scene at the end when all the noise is whipping around Sam and he is confused and lost and driven to kill Lilith, but then he hears Dean’s voice shouting to him. In that instant — as we’ve seen other times — it’s the simple sound of one brother reaching out to the other that cuts through all the chaos. I also love how Dean kills Ruby — never trusted her one time, and then for an instant, they’re brothers again, committed and supportive…cue hellatus’s arrival.
The Curious Case of Dean Winchester scene for me is that final scene between Dean and Bobby. Good for the writers that they reminded us of that moment in Point of No Return. Also, I agree: Chad Everett played Dean perfectly!
Like a Virgin…well, it’s no surprise that Season 6 was a huge disappointment for me, but I do love that hug. Dean and Bobby discussing a possible case and then Sam’s quiet voice of disbelief: Dean? And then the desperate hug…yeah, I’m just like that.
Great pull from your tupperware. Thanks for sharing these!
Fresh Blood “Just Cause” Dean’s time is running out and he is acting out of control suicidal. Sam just wants whatever time they have left to be as normal as possible. And of course he uses his secret weapon that Dean can’t ever refuse. The puppy dog look gets Dean every time. Fixing the Impala, the look on Sam’s face when he realizes what Dean is doing. It’s getting more real and it’s heart crushing for Sam.
Lucifer Rising Yep Start to Finish
TCCODW Chad Everett. He totally channeled Dean.
Like a Virgin Sam’s face after he tricked Cas into telling him what happened. After his sacrifice in SS it was a devastating blow to Sam to find out he had caused so much harm to his family and to innocents. The brother hug, Sam can’t believe where he is and Dean is stunned that Sam is up, alive and talking like his real brother Sam.
Thanks for these looks at past episodes. I am nearing the end of my summer re-watch of the series and these articles of past seasons and episodes have made my annual tradition that much more fun
