Walker Roundup Season Four Episode Thirteen: “See You Sometime”
Walker’s Season Four Episode Thirteen, “See You Sometime,” serves as the series finale. Though it was written as a season finale, it is a wonderful series ender that leaves all our characters in a good place, as they look forward to a promising future. Even if they don’t start out the episode in a good place, this episode helps them get there, especially…
Cordell
Still suffering from being drugged by the Jackal, with a simple blender sound putting him in a trance that Geri pulls him from, Cordell is trying his best to show his family how much he loves them. In return, they offer both advice and support. August said that the trauma would take time to heal from. Cordell’s mom expresses how relieved they were to have him and told him to focus on what he can do one step at a time. Stella reassures him that there is no way that him not being there would be better and offers him a path forward. Geri reaffirms that he makes her happy and requests that he come to her in the future when things get too hard. In response, Cordell plans a long vacation for himself, Geri, and the kids. At August’s graduation party, he beams with pride and love, and he gets that pride and love back in return, with his parents making sure to tell him how proud they are of how he made the farmhouse a home. This contrasts wonderfully with Bonham asking him to move out last season. Watching Jared be Cordell Walker for four seasons has been amazing. So, it’s wonderful to see so much love and happiness in his life. Even Cassie, who is upset at him, wants what is best for him and quickly approves his leave of absence. Before he leaves for an extended vacation, he looks at a picture of the four of the friends and pulls a ring box from his pocket. So, when Geri comes in with her suitcase and asks if he’s ready, his affirmative response has a double meaning. Her call of, “Let’s go, let’s go,” echoes pleas of the episode before last, but this time he follows the request. The happy family rides off into the sunset, with Cordell holding the hand of …
Geri
The rock of so many people through so much over the years, she is doing just that this episode. First, she helps Cordell out of a trance, letting him know she loves him and is here for him. Then, she turns her attention to Cassie when Cordell has to get off the phone. She has called in reinforcements in the form of Kelly coming over for a girls’ morning. When, the next day, Walker tells her he wants to make her happy, she reassures him that he does. However, when she needed him, he wasn’t there. All she asks, though, is that he let her be his rock when a case begins to overwhelm him. Even for Stella and Sadie, she wants to offer them a part in the family business, in order to help them get health insurance. Odette has such a wonderful presence, and Geri deserves to get her happy ending. Giggling like naughty teenagers, Cordell and Geri emerge from some hidden place, visibly disheveled. Though Geri says she doesn’t need it because she knows it would be hard for him to leave work behind, Cordell promises to whisk her away on vacation. That’s how her part of the story ends, hand in hand with her love, as they ride off into the proverbial sunset with…
Stella and August
Their lives have been filled with trauma, yet they start off the episode in a pretty good place, though there is room to get better. Stella gets a surprise visit from her father. They have a heartwarming heart-to-heart where Stella lets him know that their lives would not be better without him, which he really needed to hear. She has a regular year of college to look forward to, and a chance to join another family business, but first she gets to enjoy a long vacation with her family. August is graduating high school with a big party planned. He lets his dad know that things are still hard after almost losing his father, but it will just take time. It is also revealed in a touching scene, that while everything else was happening, Auggie had applied to several schools and was accepted to all of them, including Michigan and Harvard. He gets a wonderful party in his honor where he is toasted with pride. Then he gets to join in on the promised family vacation. It has been wonderful watching Violet and Kale grow along with their characters. It has also been wonderful to see all the changes in …
Liam
It was so cute watching Liam and Ben grow even closer this season. Keegan and Matt are so cute together. This episode was no exception. Liam stumbling to ask Ben to move in with him and Ben trying to get him to use normal words was adorable. Of course, Ben says yes. However, before they can look at places, Liam gets a mysterious call from the governor and is whisked away in a black SUV. But at least Liam and Ben are happy, as are …
Bonham and Abeline
These two are always delightful. Mitch and Molly are incredible together. They were given relatable storylines that fit their time in life. This season, it has been about retirement. Though they have had disagreements, now they’re working together. Bonham, loving to see Abeline happy, offers to help with the events business. Abeline clarifies that she only wants to oversee the business, leaving them time to use the boat that is now a tax write off. After showing how much they love and are proud of their family, they take a delightful boat ride with the wind in their hair – well, wind in Abeline’s hair. Bonham doesn’t have any, which matches the hair length of …
Larry and Kelly James
The Jackal case was hard on them years ago and was so again. Coby and Kearran have played their relationship so beautifully through it all. Now, that case and its darkness is behind them so they can focus on being together. But first, they must be there for others. Kelly comes to help Cassie in her moment of need, hugging her and sharing in a girl morning. Captain James looks so proud during the interviews of both Trey and Cassie. When delivering the good news to Cassie, he compliments her work. When he has to deliver the bad news to Trey, he makes sure that Trey knows it wasn’t because he’s lacking in anything but experience. Maybe now that he has a second in command, he can spend more time at home, thanks to …
Cassie
Still reeling from losing her love, Luna, and the life they could have shared, Cassie is not in a good place, and realistically couldn’t rebound in an episode that covers just a few days. However, she gets support from friends, family, and her boss. She is loved, cared for, and promoted. Even though she falters in the interview, and doesn’t feel like celebrating at the party, she shows up. Ashley portrays every emotion as she slowly begins the healing process so well. Watching her put down roots as she moves into her office, carefully placing the treasures she went through with Liam earlier in the season, is a wonderful way to bring her story full circle. The coaster Luna wrote on having a place of honor is a great way to remember him. As her first act as lieutenant was to grant Walker a leave of absence, she, in a future unseen, may need to still partner with …
Trey
Toward the beginning of the episode, Trey is preparing for his lieutenant interview. His preparations become the interview in an incredibly edited sequence. He, of course, nails the interview because perfection is his thing. However, he is still a very new Ranger who doesn’t have the 10 yrs DPS experience, so the lieutenant position goes to Cassie. He takes this in stride and as a chance to learn more and not a failure. After changing careers so often early in the season, he knows he’s where he is supposed to be. What he refuses to take is Kelly up on her offer to fix him up with someone. Instead, he adds another job to his incredibly long list of things he does well, DJing. However, one thing he always is, no matter his job, is a good friend – which he remains even though Cassie is promoted over him. It’s how he will always be, shown or not.
One problem “See You Sometime” does have is its continuity. There is a minor, honestly comical lapse where Stella and August load their luggage in the truck, hug Sadie goodbye, then Stella is the one who is to drive off from the farmhouse. Only, a little later, Geri and Cordell roll their luggage out of the farmhouse and it cuts to Cordell driving. Was the “drive safe” hug-worthy goodbye from Sadie for Stella and August going to get gas or something? That seems a bit much, but it’s funny to think about.
However, the worse continuity error was the timeline. From dialogue within the episodes, episode 4.07 took place on February 4th and 5th, because August’s boot camp graduation was the fifth. Episode eight said that episode seven was yesterday. Episode nine (and ten) was within 24 hours of episode eight. Even interviews at the beginning this episode were said to be ten days from episode nine. So realistically, it should still be February or early March at the latest. However, suddenly it’s August’s graduation, which is late May. A problem with this is that they say Cordell has been absent from their lives for months, when it was shown to be a couple of weeks, at most. Which seems unfair to Cordell, which is a common complaint people have about this show.
On the other hand, one thing this episode did superbly is callback to negative instances in the past and make them better. There are too many to list or to even catch all of them. The most obvious is that where Stella didn’t get a graduation party because Cordell was kidnapped and tortured, they get to have one for August. Instead of Ben arguing with Cassie about comparisons, he tells her she can compare her grief to what he felt over losing Lucas. Cap goes to Trey’s place and doesn’t get shot. When Bonham, with Abeline this time, talks to Cordell about living in the farmhouse, it’s not to kick him out, but to praise him for turning it into a home. Geri gets to hear Cordell say that the opening of the Side Step 2.0 isn’t just good for her, but Cordell includes himself, too. And this time, when Cordell takes a leave of absence and goes on a trip with Geri, Stella, and Auggie, it’s not due to grief, shame, and guilt, but instead borne of a desire just to spend quality time with each other.
This was a wonderful episode where so much healing took place. Our characters are in good, or better places, looking forward to the future. Though it is sadly, and maddeningly, the end for now, at least that part leaves a good feeling. And, who knows? Maybe it’s not a goodbye, but a “See You Sometime.”
