Countdown to…Countdown!

It’s been a while since we’ve had a highly anticipated premiere, but here we are!  Wednesday a new series that stars Jensen Ackles premieres on Amazon Prime Video.  This series is the big opportunity for Jensen, giving him the action/adventure leading man role that he so richly deserves.  In other words, plenty of fan girl squee coming!   But, before we get all excited, let’s take a deeper look at this promising new series.  

Countdown

Let’s start with the series synopsis.  Okay, it ain’t much, but here’s what Amazon is offering:

An LAPD officer joins a secret task force to investigate a suspicious murder, but uncovers a sinister plot that requires the team to unite and save millions in the city.

LA, cops, guns, intrigue, it all sounds good so far.  But what else to we know?  The series is created by Derek Haas, who has a pedigree writing and producing for all the Dick Wolf Chicago series, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD!  He also has worked on FBI International, so he seems to have the procedural cop shows down.  Oh wait, wasn’t there an infamous rant about procedural cop shows?  

Okay, kidding aside, the fact is this isn’t your traditional out of the box procedural cop show.  At least it’s not being described this way.  Jensen plays Mark Meachum, an LA detective recruited to a top secret task force made up of other undercover agents from other agencies of law enforcement when an officer from Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight.  Ah, but the hunt for the killer has the team chasing a plot that is far more sinister than anyone could have imagined and now millions are in danger of a “Chernobyl-level event” in LA.  

According to Jensen, Derek Haas is a big fan of the 1980’s and 1990’s action adventure movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.  That is what he is going for with this series – a rich, exciting, heart pounding story that focuses just as much on character building as plot.  Think Riggs and Murtaugh, John McClain and…the skyscraper.  The series also stars Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight, and Uli Latukefu.

Finally, Amazon Prime Video has released 12 preview photos.  Yes, there’s quite a bit of pretty here!

Amazon Prime Video will drop the first three episodes on Countdown on June 25th.  An episode will then be released each week until September, airing 13 episodes in total.
