The show slated to be paired with The Vampire Diaires, Changelings (Betwixt) was passed over for pickup by The CW.  They didn't like the dark theme and didn't see any potential in the storyline.  But...

They don't want Supernatural to have that Thursday at 9pm slot either.  They have their biggest hit in The Vampire Diaries and would like to use that lead in to foster a new show instead of an aging one that maintains a loyal fanbase but will likely not increase in ratings.  So...

That leaves Fridays right?  Not so fast.  You see, The CW only picked up two series in Nikita and Hellcats.  They have three hours of holes to fill, and that's assuming no series fails.  Sure Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill were renewed, but both only have 12 episode orders right now so one (One Tree Hill) likely is going to midseason.  If you have to run an hour repeats of America's Next Top Model (they do make money on that repeat), doesn't Fridays at 9pm seem like the perfect time?  In other words, it would not make sense for a network with a thin schedule to burn off two popular shows on a Friday night.

Now the dilemma begins.  If Thursday at 9pm and Friday is not an option, what night does Supernatural go to?  The openings are on Tuesday (either slot if 90210 can be moved) or 9pm Wednesday.  Or, Smallville gets moved and Supernatural takes over Fridays.  So let's speculate away!  Where does Supernatural end up in the fall?  It should be noted, its still being repeated on Fridays in the summer.

Oh, as for midseason, that's not likely. The schedule as I mentioned is thin and Supernatural repeats very well. So does Smallville. They usually like avoiding Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and 90210 repeats.

A girl who runs a site about Smallville told me that she heard rumors that Smallville would be moved to Wednesdays. I have no idea where she head that, though.

I have no idea what they're going to do, but I was relieved when I read in your twitter that Supernatural in midseason is unlikely. I really don't want that to our show.

I thought that Wednesday is better than Friday? *Blushes*

I just hope that Supernatural can hold the ratings no matter the time slot it gets.

Oh, I understand better now... Thank you, Alice!

I'll be hard to wait until Thursday for the official announcement.

I'm optimistic that they're either either letting Supernatural stay on Thursday or move it to Tuesday. A girl can hope right?!
Do we know if Life unexpected and One Tree got a 22 or 13 episode order for next season? They could also put One Tree Hill at Friday because I think it's their finale season as well. Then they could move TVD with Nikita to Tuesdays and put Smallville and Supernatural back on Thursday.
Guess we will know tomorrow!

Reading this I realized again that I'm so not familiar with US television politics. Ay, me! So I can't indulge in speculating here or giving a 'real' opinion.

I, living in Europe, rely on the internet to watch the episodes of my favourite show (the other I like is True Blood, so that will get me a bit through summer).

Personally, I would prefer Supernatural moving to Friday and staying there for deeply selfish reasons: I wouldn't have to get up an hour and a half earlier on Friday morning to watch it before going to work and end up at work puffy-eyed (depending on the drama, of course) and worked up, which used to make concentrating at my job much more difficult.

Then again, no one is beating me to do that on Fridays (or most likely on other mornings after the original Supernatural airing). I'm doing that because I'm insane. But I've noticed that I can't help it - and I have yet to find the discipline to be strong enough to wait... Not likely. Not with this show.

Thanks for the update, Alice! Cheers, Jas

To be selfish, whatever night it airs is fine with me. Not as if I'm not going to watch and I don't watch anything else on the CW. Obviously, I'd like their ratings to at least remain steady at worst so a potential seventh season (if they can still conjure up fantastic stories) won't get nipped before it buds.

I'll watch whenever it is on, but of course I would wish for the spot with the best ratings.

What got me excited here was you Alice, saying they expect Supernatural to go two or three more seasons at least. I hope hope hope this is what will be. :o

I've read posts on many sites that keep saying the sixth season is the last one. That depresses me no end, as I can't imagine living without the Winchesters.

Thanks for keeping us in the know as well as we can be.

Good it's not a midseason replacement. I couldn't bear that!

As I understand it, it's not rated as 'family', so can't be on 8:00pm any night. Is that right, Alice?

As for what night...I'd like to see the rating go up, and SPN always did good after SVL. I know when SPN first started in 2005, it was on Tuesday nights at 9:00pm, and got 5-6 mil viewers each episode. However, now it would be up against some big shows.

If they are expecting SPN to go for a few years yet, I would think putting it on Friday after America's Next Top Model would be a disaster. I think it's best place would be Fridays after SVL. Not to much competion there.

I think following Smallville what ever night it's on would be it's best lead in. Let's not forget, here in the States, Thursday night is a BIG night with lots of competition. That is why all the hoopla. For our show to be so successful on a night of CSI's and Grey's Anatomy and such..and continue to gain a following in its 4th and 6th season is saying ALOT! Plus the CW doesn't even promote it!

Based on all the rumors I've gotten today (including the fact that this is indeed Smallville's last season) here's my prediction (PLEASE NOTE, PREDICTION). We'll see if I'm right.

Monday 8pm Life Unexpected (One Tree Hill Midseason)
9pm Gossip Girl

Tuesday 8pm 90210
9pm Hellcats

Wednesday 8pm America's Next Top Model
9pm Smallville

Thursday 8pm The Vampire Diaries
9pm Nikita

Fridays 8pm ANTM repeat
9pm Supernatural

I'm not betting the farm on this of course, but I'm thinking the only real ?? right now is what to do with Smallville. The rest is accurate from my POV.

Geniuses at the CW can't count, apparently. Supernatural, Smallville, and Vampire Diaries are consistently rating higher and selling lots more DVDs than any of the dramas on the CW. So they drop Betwixt (and 'too dark' on the network that airs Supernatural? Really?) in favor of Hellcats? (Nikita I don't know how to classify, since it isn't fantastic and doesn't sound like the CW's usual kind of drama.)

Even though its Smallville's last season, I can't see them moving it again -- it did really well for them on Friday this season AND all the networks seem to be trying to program Fridays again for next season.

I really thought that they would leave Thursday alone as its their best night as is -- and try to rebuild Tuesday night, which is a disaster -- and launch Nikita at 8 like they did Vampire Diaries this season.
So I say this is one possibility:
Monday
LUX and OTH split the 8PM hour
Gossip Girl stays at 9PM

Tuesday
Nikita is launched as new anchor of Tuesday
Nomads (another spy story and 90210 split the 9PM hour

Wed
ANTM stays at 8 2 cycles with a new reality series in between
Hellcats at 9PM with another reality series split

Thursday (no change)
The Vampire Diaries
Supernatural

Friday
Smallville
encore of Nikita or Hellcats

I can't see both SN and SV on Fridays -- its too expensive.
What about moving them both back to Tuesday?

Monday
LUX and OTH split the 8PM hour
Gossip Girl stays at 9PM

Tuesday
Smallville
Supernatural

Wed
ANTM
Hellcats and reality

Thursday
Vampire Diaries
Nikita

Friday
ANTM encore
Nikita encore

I dunno -- it seems like they need another show, doesn't it?
