Wonder where Supernatural's ratings have been?  Here's where.  DVRs.

I've been waiting eagerly for these ratings to come out since Supernatural's live numbers have been so low.  TV By The Numbers.com finally released the Live +7 DVR ratings for season premiere week (September 19th - 25th).

Supernatural ranked #1 in percentage of viewers gained with Live + 7 DVR numbers factored in 18-49.  That's the rating advertisers care about.  Their ratings in 18-49 increased a whopping 63 percent!  The ratings for "Meet The New Boss" were adjusted upward to a 1.3 18-49 rating, up from their .8 live plus same day DVR rating.

Just for perspective, only one show on The CW even comes remotely close to a 1.3 live rating, and that's The Vampire Diaries.  When other CW shows had their DVR ratings factored in, both Ringer and The Secret Circle got a 1.3 as well, but they had a higher .9 live rating.  America's Next Top Model only came in at a 1.1, Nikita a .9, and 90210 a 1.0.  The Vampire Diaries got a 1.7.

It also should be noted that the competition Fringe finished 3rd on the list, going up 53% from a 1.5 to a 2.3.  Sounds like watching live on Fridays may not be a priority, but Friday shows still getting noticed.

The chart can be found here, but I can tell you that since TV By The Numbers has done these DVR charts, Supernatural has never finished number one and never close to 63%.  That's a pretty large jump for any show.

The CW loves to spin DVR numbers, so this is all good.

This really looks like the light at the end of my tunnel! I plan to go to Vancon next year and I so want to visit the set of Supernatural - but without a season 8 this would be a waste of time (and money!)
Thank you for posting this!

This was extremely good news. Ratings are a big factor in our season 8 chances, and if these DVR numbers keep doing this or anything remotely like it, we will get it.

I can't say I'm that worry about a Season 8, with the dismal ratings that CW has this year and the not-nearly strong new shows, there's no way CW would be cutting SPN from the list when it's a steady veteran show and considering they are also exiting OTH this year. They would never get rid of two vets at one time, CW can't afford that. I think either way SPN is safe for a season 8 no matter what the ratings look. This is the CW after all.

Thanks Alice but i need some insight interpreting these numbers.

So Live + DVR is 1.3 ( i am assuming Live rating is rating @ broadcast time and DVR rating is live recorded and later on watched?)

What is mean by "Live+ 7 DVR" numbers? Thanks for news!!

Some friends and I were all very excited over the increased ratings etc etc when we all (finally) got around to admitting that none of us actually know what DVR is......

What’s DVR? Is it like recording it and playing it back later ie like Sky Plus where you can record shows and keep them on there as long as you want? If it is, how does that help with advertising? Would most people not skip through the ads when watching it on playback? I don’t think I’ve seen an ad in about 2 years!

DVR is the video recorder. DVR +7 is the playbacks on DVR for an episode that wasn't watched live within seven days. DVR +3 is 3 days, Same Day, you get the point.

How does that help with advertising? There's the problem. Advertisers have conceded in paying for DVR +3 ratings. They've accepted DVRs are the norm, and some do watch commercials on the DVR. Even fast forwarding over an ad is better than nothing.

We don't see the DVR +3 ratings, but usually most people watch a show within 3 days. 7 days is a much slimmer margin.

One of the features I love most on this site is your articles concerning number crunching, so thanks for this.

It occurred to me, though, that I think maybe I was looking at numbers with some sort of vague hope for a Season 8, but then I reminded myself today that that's still fairly unlikely. (Numbers notwithstanding, there are contractual hurdles that make me think this season may indeed be the last.) Still, I really hope the numbers go out with some punch!

Season 8 is extremely likely, ratings or not. Supernatural is now an established franchise. Now that they've hit the magic number of over 100 episodes, more episodes mean a lot of money. Check out the number of countries the show airs in the "I Need Your Help" article. There's a reason Smallville went 200 episodes. Now they're selling that many episodes on the open market for pure profit.

I'm writing an article explaining the numbers, but Supernatural is secure. I really hope it'll come out soon.

Oh, I'm really looking forward to your article with the numbers. Certainly I can see why another season would be worth it to the WB. As for the people that are essential to the show, though... Kripke left already. Even mad genius Ben Edlund is stepping down a bit, I believe. Sera Gamble and Robert Singer are doing wonders in my mind, but still. Then you come to the fact that both J's no longer have to be there, and I just don't know how the network could make it worth their while to stay (considering the hours they work)--but maybe the numbers would provide a possible theory on that.

Thing is, I actually love the show where it is now creatively, but I imagine the people that work on it are exhausted. But that is conjecture at best--on to the numbers, because I would prefer your facts. :)

Not sure what you are talking about "the fact that both J's no longer have to be there"?
Do you mean in terms of their choice of work?
As the leads of their own show, even on the CW they are compensated very well - most likely better than they would be on a 'new' show. (As they damn well should be with the work they put in on the show)
In the later seasons of Smallville, Tom Welling was given producer credits.
