I suppose from a demo perspective, the 18-49 is consistent with last week, but 18-34 is way as is overall viewers. There were a couple of factors. First, it was Good Friday. Second, the word is Smallville and Supernatural didn't air in St. Louis (which was likely weather related), Oklahoma City, or Sacramento (there might be others too). I find it somewhat interesting that CW publicity did a huge promotional push for both Smallville and Supernatural this week, sending advance copies of the episodes to critics, yet this network cannot convince all their affiliates to air these shows when running first run episodes. There in lies a big problem with The CW. They definitely have some affiliate problems.
Anyway, all of The CW was way down this week, so any decreases were in line with the rest of the network. Fringe also had series low numbers. Below is Smallville's numbers for those interested. 8pm always does better than 9pm for The CW, so here's hoping that Supernatural get's Smallville's Friday at 8pm slot next year. It'll certainly avoid a conflict with Fringe!
Smallville (94% coverage CW normally 95%)
- 2.352 million viewers
- 1.4/3 HH
- 1.0/4 A18-49
- 0.7/3 A18-34
- 0.5/2 W18-34

Here in Germany some episodes of Supernatural are rated R. Therefore our show comes on after 10 pm here and no chance for it to get an earlier slot. Very seldom they do a double show here and sometimes it might even come on after 9pm with the first ep being one they didn't rate R.
So here is the question. Are TV shows not rated in the states or did they quit caring about it? Is there actually a chance for our show to get that early 8 pm slot?
It is interesting to me that Supernatural earns an R rating in Germany. I don't pay close enough attention, but the language seems relatively clean ... aside from not infrequent use of the B-word (which bothers me, but it has become so pervasive in our culture that many read right past it I suspect). And the gore in Supernatural has an almost campy feel to it ... usually it comes in the form of (obviously) fake blood spattering on a wall or window. Last week's episode featured a decapitation, though, which surprised the heck out of me. My impression is that the creators of Supernatural follow the tradition of Hitchcock and leave a lot to the imagination of the viewers. The show seems steeped in the occult, which may offend more conservative viewers and explain an R Rating. Am I naive? For all its thrill, the show seems to me rather tame, comparatively speaking.
Out of frustration, I finally purchased on Amazon last night, but I really like watching on TV, I turn off the cable and watch, commericals and all. I am the CW's perfect consumer, why not appease me?
