Hello all,

I was wondering if we could start a discussion about what we think is going on with Dean and having a soul. I've heard various theories that he doesn't have a soul and that he's hiding that fact. And now with the presence of Amara, we may actually find out what's going on.

**I truly hope this is the right place to have this discussion. I've been navigating the site and trying to participate more, but it seems a little confusing since not all the discussions appear to happen on the Discussion Page (i.e. the News, Articles, and Spoilers pages all seem to have discussions there). So, if this is better placed elsewhere, please forgive me. I'm confuzzled. lol.**

But, here is what I think or this is the impression that I have: Dean and Amara have a strange connection and we are learning about that through Dean's perspective since he is just as perplexed as the audience is at this point. Dean essentially freed The Darkness, so perhaps Amara feels indebted to him somehow, but it does seem like more is going on. I like seeing Dean confused by it, otherwise I think it would throw the whole storyline off.

Some are speculating that Dean doesn't have a soul, but I think he does and I'm thinking that his role in "freeing The Darkness" isn't quite done yet. I think Dean's soul is going to be the key to all of this. Kind of like Amara is the Gatekeeper and Dean's Soul is the Keymaster. And once those two things get together, then Amara will finally have full power and/or The Darkness will finally have what it needs to consume the world. I think that's why Amara has her eye on Dean. I'm not seeing it as anything romantic or sexual or intimate in that way. For me, it's either going to be that his Soul is the one thing she *can't* consume (which would be interesting and would take things in a different direction) or that his Soul is the 'ultimate soul', the final one that she must consume when she's old enough and powerful enough and ready to. And, if the latter is the case, then I can see Dean sacrificing his own soul, somehow and someway, to keep Amara from getting it.

Anyway, those are my impressions. So, I was wondering what everyone else's thoughts were on that. Please feel free to discuss. :)

The only thoughts I've really had regarding this is something isn't right. Dean hasn't been Dean since the beginning of the season. Granted we haven't seen normal Dean in so long- its possible he's changed a lot giving his recent history. However, it seems like more than that. I think Dean has a soul- we have seen him eat and he sleeps (I'm assuming) but I think something changed when The Darkness touched him. The same way the Sydney in "Thin Lizzie" seemed to change- even just slightly- when Amara touched her. Sure she then lost her soul, but initially the touch did something to Sydney and I think perhaps something similar happened to Dean. Maybe a lack of conscience. Not exactly no soul- but something. He cares way too little about the preservation of ANYONE'S life at this point for me to believe that something hasn't changed in him- beyond general change from age and struggle.
As far as the connection goes between Dean and Amara- I am still deeply pondering what that could really mean.

Hi Kelsey & Scfi. I havn't noticed you girls before so Welcome. It can get a bit difficult navigating around the site no matter how much admin try to reign us all in We tend to get very passionate with our debates so answers to questions could be in many different spots throughout the site. You will notice that your question has been a topic of discussion since S11 Ep1 and their is many theories floating around. I am not the most experienced here at WFB I signed up about 6 mths ago and it turned out to be the best thing I ever did. Alice Jester/ Wednesday/Samanddean/Nightsky/Bookdal and many many more have wonderful theories on your question. What I would say is PLEASE be prepared with a coffee or cuppa tea and biscuits Go to the above link Articles Page and read through the posts there A lot of the titles won't say Dean Soul no Soul but they do have discussions on Dean -- such as Reviews Our Little World, Thin Lizzie, Baby they all have great disussions on The question of Dean being different ?

The Ladies go into great details with their ideas and theories and its wonderful to read / its also very simple to reply and ask them to please explain further, or for you to say what your thoughts are. I would be very careful I was threathened to be salted and burned in one discussion LOL HAAAAAAA it was in fun
Anyway ladies Welcome you have come to the best site ever for your answers And the one topic you have asked about is the HOTEST TOPIC this season Jenny xo

Hi ScifiSpirit! Thanks for starting this topic. I think it's a fascinating topic and I tried to get people over to this link. But yes, if it's being discussed in other parts of the site, maybe others didn't see it.

First, allow me to explain the purpose of the discussion page because it confuses a lot of people. Our articles are meant to spurn discussions which often to go off in many unplanned tangents. Those discussions are technically started by writers though. The Discussion Page is the chance for site visitors to start their own topics that the articles aren't covering or aren't giving a topic a central place of focus. So what you did here is great and the true intent of the discussion page.

Having said that I agree a lot with KelseyKill. I picture a soulless Dean to be like him under the influence of the Turducken sandwich (not giving a crap at all) or more like Demon Dean. But still, why wouldn't he let Castiel heal him in "The Bad Seed"? It makes you wonder if he is soulless. What is up with Dean?

I like your theory though. I wonder if she's slowly feeding on his soul right now because of their connection. It just seems like she's already done something to his soul rather than she'll need it later. It's a connection though that neither Dean nor Amara can explain, so anything can happen!

I believe Dean didn't won't Cas to heal him in "The Bad Seed " simply because of guilt. Dean is still settling down from his mark issues and the pain from the beating reminded Dean he was human. As Alice said neither Amara nor Dean can explain this connection, so I don't see how Dean would be soulless because Amara wouldn't be bothered tormenting him and she would know this is their connection and surley Crowely would have picked up on it.

Dean is off there is no doubt about it but I think when your so unsure of something it does affect you in strange ways, I'm surprised Sam hasn't noticed or at least commented.
The MOC was a extremely powerful curse. It locked away a extremely powerful person (god's sister) Dean released Amara from her prison === there is surely going to be some form of connection / bond / curiosity

Hi!

First, Thank you, Alice, for explaining the function of the site better to me. I really appreciate it. I really do love it here. And the members are so passionate, it's great to talk about the show! I'm glad this topic was started in the right place, then. I have tons more I want to start, mostly about Cas and/or Crowley, but I'll take my time. :)

I actually agree with Jen regarding why Dean didn't want Cas to heal him. Dean has always struck me as the sort to not indulge too much into *anything* supernatural, whether it be help from a demon or help from an angel. It seemed like, to me, that he didnt' want Cas's help mostly because he didn't feel it was necessary. Perhaps it was out of guilt or some other internal issue, but I doubt it had anything to do with his soul, or lack thereof.

I also agree that if Dean is soulless, then Amara would likely not be that interested in him. Although, Alice's idea of Amara slowly feeding on his soul right now is an intriguing notion. Maybe her interest in him has nothing to do with his soul, maybe it'll be revealed that since he's the one that freed her, he may be the only one who can kill her. But that's getting off this topic.

For now, I'm still thinking that his soul is going to be the final key to completely freeing her (once she consumes it, if she does) or that it will be instrumental in destroying her/putting her back where she came from.

When Dean is around Amara he has that deer-in-the-headlights look terrified people get. Fear can paralyze-a plot thread woven through many episodes this season. Most discussion of fear centers on Sam, but to me it applies equally to Dean and Amara. Cobras hypnotize their victims. Dean certainly looks dazed and thoroughly spooked around her. We aren't used to our guys getting freaked out, but if anything would do it it's the Darkness and the cage.
