Supernatural 2009 - The Little Moments That Make Me Smile

Almost every episode has them.  Usually episodes can be categorized as either not a winner, dividing the fandom, or being a major classic. With almost every episode though, there is a small little moment between the characters that make us smile or giggle.  Subtle reminders as to why we love this show. They aren’t earth shattering or ground breaking, just enough to give us fond memories when looking back.  It also keeps us coming back for a rewatch.

In 2009, there were 22 episodes. 12 for season four, 10 for season five. So out of those, which ones gave me those little quick, happy moments? More than I thought.

Family Remains

A terrible episode, probably the worst of season four, but I still get all giddy over the shot of Sam Winchester trying to sleep in the back of the Impala. I still try to picture how uncomfortable that might be for a man that’s 6’ 4”, even if the car they’re driving is a boat. Dean’s angst only made Sam’s inability to sleep even better.

Criss Angel Is A Douchebag

I know many hated this scene, but come on, the idea of Dean, manly and badass Dean, being tricked into visiting a male dom is hilarious. Uncomfortably funny, but when you get a line that says “You haven’t been had until you’ve been had by the Chief,” how can you forget that?

After School Special

Remember in Wendigo when Dean said he doesn’t do shorts? The rule is broken the second the opportunity came up for Dean to play gym teacher and buck the modern day mentality that Dodgeball is dangerous. A victory for level headed moms and hormonally driven fans everywhere.

I really liked Jo shooting down Dean...to me that's when I really 'saw' how mature and confident she'd become. Alona did a nice job with it too, so simple yet so nuanced in just a second.

I missed Changing Channels this past week (was at my mom's for a great vacation) so I'm planning on it tonight along with, of all things, Monster at the End of the Book as that's where I had left off with Season 4. Perhaps an odd combo but I want to see both really badly (withdrawal, no SPN viewing for over 10 days...I'm getting the shakes . It's blustery and cold and I'm tired from 15 hours straight of driving (whilst Jobe slept and Munchkin the kitty snoozed...they are troopers when traveling) so I'm planning on some light stuff around the house, popcorn, hot cocoa (not at the same time) and as much SPN as I can muster...maybe I'll finish Season 4 viewing as well.

Happy New Year, all.

Loved this, Alice, loved it, loved it… My favourite Changing Channels moment is Sam’s ‘Should I honk?’ Laughing Laughing Laughing I fall off the chair laughing every time…

You know, I’ve often thought that it’s especially the little moments, like the ones you reminded us of, that make this show so special. Shows about heroic guys are legion, but most come and go without leaving any impact on the tv-universe. This show, however, does. It is never cheesy or trashy (or – if it is, it is done deliberately and with great care and consistency with the storyline and the characters), but to the point and of the kind of quality you rarely find. Apart from that, it has those hilarious moments and it doesn’t take itself too seriously… Which is immensely important to my opinion.

Question: I was introduced to the vampire show ‘True Blood’ over my holiday (talk about bloody Christmas…), and I actually liked it. Now, there is a character named Sam (a shapeshifter). In one scene the female lead Sookie calls Sam after he shifted into a gorgeous collie Dean. ‘Dog Dean.’ Do you know whether this was meant to be a nod to Supernatural? It seems too much of a coincidence…

Great list, Alice! These little moments are all part of the reason SPN is such a clever show that keeps me coming back.

@Jas- first, True Blood is awesome! Second, the Sam/Dean thing from True Blood is coincidental, believe it or not. True Blood is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels, which were written beginning in 2001 - and it's in the book that the man Sam and the "dog-Dean" reference was born. Would've been a neat hat-tip to our boys though.

Indeed,Elle? What a coincidence... I laughed my head off during that scene...
Actually, I just ordered the SStackhouse novels, want to know what's going to happen after season one's finale and I've liked vampire novels for a long time - if they're good. There's so much rubbish out there (just recently so many new novels, riding with the Twilight-stuff (which was boring for me, don't kill me), came out... Well, I'm quite curious, and since I don't sleep well I'll spend the time reading...
Thanks for putting me in the picture, Elle. It would have indeed been a sweet 'hat-tip' to our favourite show...

Having read all the SS novels - they're a pretty good read, nice mix of humour, drama and romance - very different style from the Twilight series. Much different from the show, you'll quickly see. I find they're enjoyable (the show and the novels) as long as you look at them as mostly independent from one another - some people I know have gotten frustrated because of the differences, but obviously the world of literature is much simpler to both concieve and execute than that of television. Like you, I watched the show then read the books - I now thoroughly love both and am anxiously awaiting book 10 as well as Season 3 this summer.

Alice, any chance we'll see another of these favourite moment lists for past seasons/years?

Hi Alice
Love the list. It made me laugh remembering those moments.Laughing
Deans happy dance.
Castiel holding the badge upside down, with that serious expression.
Sam trying to get thru that commercial add.
Thanks for sharing.

Loved this Alice. I still remember in 'Family Remains' Sam falling back down in the back seat and rocking the whole car. And of course Dean's glee at Sam's dismay

In The Real Ghostbusters, I guess fake Sam and Dean didn’t remember the lighter not lighting for Dean in ‘Provenance’...that doll’s hair just wasn’t going to burn!

Nice collection of memories…but now on the rest of season 5! WOW, less than 3 weeks to go!

Great stuff here, but how could anyone have hated that scene in Criss Angel? That was mindnumbingly funny. And in After School Special? That was my grade school gym teacher right there. Genius.

I thought those shorts were seriously scary in any number of ways. Shocked

I love True Blood, the first series just finished here, but I can't get my head round the books at all. I think you're right Elle, best to regard them as two different beasts entirely. I'm glad I saw the TV version first, though, or I wouldn't have bothered watching and missed out big time!
