Home Articles Season Four

After the S6 finale, I saw a lot of discussion on the concept of Dean and Cas as family, particularly the validity of Dean’s assertion that Cas was like a brother to him, and Cas’s echoing of that sentiment.  And I started thinking (rarely a purely good thing) – I have also frequently wondered about the bond between Dean and Cas, and as the seasons progressed have many times been confused by the growth of their friendship.  I never doubted the bond and friendship existed, to me it’s always been self-evident.   I just frequently lost track of the “how’s” of the development.  So I pulled out the DVD’s beginning with S4 and started watching.  And analyzing.  And studying.  And discussing it with a friend and fellow fan.  And then got confused again.  So I decided to write out a timeline of every episode Cas has appeared in since he met Dean, focusing separately on Dean’s perspective and Cas’s perspective (I’m just a little OCD) – and mostly excluding Sam from the discussion for the sake of my sanity.  And then I decided to share it.  The following article is part 1 of a planned 3 part series, beginning with season 4.

It’s time for season four episode titles. You know what that means? We’re one week closer to April 15th! This season had a lot of really great references, it’s also the season I’ve watched the least of all of them. It was great to re-live the episodes and remember some details I’d forgotten. I refuse to let my Supernatural knowledge get rusty! I hope you find these title references as interesting as I did.

Now - An attractive woman taking a shower at a spa is peeped on by a young, pale boy with red hair. When she turns, he becomes invisible! She wraps a towel around herself and walks to the sinks. An invisible hand wipes the condensation from the shower door to better see her. After she wraps a towel around her hair, we see wet footsteps approaching her. Sensing a presence, she turns. "Hello? Anybody there?" She pulls the towel off her head and tosses it toward the rack. However, it ends up on the head of the invisible young man. She stares at the towel, seemingly hovering in mid-air. "Hello, Mrs. Armstrong," says a voice. She screams.

Bar - Dean rapidly downs shots as he and Sam argue over Uriel. Why would Uriel tell me you remember hell if you don't? wonders Sam. "Because he's a dick," says Dean, as if that explains everything. Their fey waiter stops at the table to offer them more food--a chipotle chimichanga or fryer bombs? Dean says no, then gives the guy a wide-eyed, WEIRDO look. "I have no idea why Uriel told you I remember hell," says Dean. Watching his brother down the third shot, Sam says, "Right" sarcastically. Sam insists Dean look him in the eye and tell him he doesn't remember a thing from his time "down under." Dean does so, easily. Sam just wants to help. "You know everything I do," insists Dean. Their waiter returns. "Outstanding!" he chortles. "Dudes, you have got to try our Ice Cream Extreme. It's extreme." Check, says Sam. The waiter drops it on the table instantly. "All right, awesome!" he says in parting. Munching a pretzel, Dean wants to know, "Where do we go from here?" Sam shows him a report on his computer showing that a ghost might be haunting a women's health facility in Concrete, Washington--a woman claims the ghost threw her down a flight of stairs. Dean is already grabbing money from his wallet. "Women? Showers?" he says. "We've got to save these people!"

It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester”

Now - two days before Halloween - A young woman passes by decorations and kids prepping for the holiday. She enters her home loaded down with Halloween candy. Her husband, feeding their baby, gazes eagerly at the huge bucket of candy she puts on the shelf. He tries to grab a piece, but she smacks his hand and tells him not until after Halloween, they ran out at 6:30 last year. She lifts her baby son from his high chair and asks her husband if he's joining her for his bath. "I'll be up in a minute," he promises, but as soon as she's gone, he opens the cabinet and takes candy out of the bucket, unwraps it and starts to chew it. He takes another piece, but quickly discards it; something is wrong. We see the inside of his mouth, where a razor blade has lodged itself into his palate. (ouch and ewww!) He removes that one, fingers bloody, then throws up another, with more blood. His wife comes in with the baby, wanting to know what's taking him so long. Seeing him lying there, blood dribbling from his mouth, she screams.

“Yellow Fever”

NOW: Dean is running down a dark street, legs pumping, lungs burning, looking over his shoulder at a snarling enemy chasing him. He falls over a homeless man's grocery cart filled with God-knows-what and says to the man, "RUN! HE'LL KILL YOU!" The man looks down at a teacup Yorkie, complete with pink bow. Dean takes off running, the dog runs after him, barking an adorable little bark.

Rock Ridge, Colorado, 13 hours earlier - Agents Tyler and Perry (the Winchesters, posing as FBI), meet Frank O'Brien, deceased, in the morgue. The man was only 44 and a marathon runner, according to the folder Sam is reading from. The doctor reminds them we all die sometime. Two other men died in Monmouth yesterday, says Dean, you don't think that strange? "That's Malmouth's problem," says the doc nastily. Dean says they want to see the results of the autopsy. "What autopsy?" asks the doc. "The one you're gonna do," says Dean smoothly. They all suit up for the procedure, and as the doctor cuts into the body, he looks at the icked-out expressions on the brothers' faces and asks, "First autopsy?" "Far from it," Dean assures him. Good, says the doc, because these suckers can get pretty ripe. He asks Dean for the rib cutters. Dean notices Frank had been wearing a wedding ring, while Sam sees terrible abrasions on his inside of his forearms. The doctor, puzzled, finds the heart to be pretty damned healthy. He asks Dean to hold the heart, which he does, grossed out. Sam smiles at his brother, silently making fun. Next second, Sam gets splashed with spleen juice, and it's Dean's turn to grin, still holding the heart in both hands.
“Monster Movie”
--Robin's Rambles by Robin Vogel

Thunder and lightning fill the sky as the credits roll just like they would in an old time monster movie. The Impala turns a corner, passing a sign that alternately reads, "Welcome to Pennsylvania" and "Welcome to Transylvania." While Sam thinks they should be addressing the coming end of the world, Dean is delighted to have a black and white case involving nothing more than a few vampires to behead.

Oktoberfest 2008 - The proper music plays as prettily dressed girls walk the street. Dean and Sam, suited up, exit the Impala. Dean wants to see the new RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK movie and is upset to learn Sam saw it without him. "You were in hell," Sam reminds him. "No excuse," says Dean. Dean runs over to grab big pretzels for the two of them as Sam fondly shakes his head. A sweet honey greets Dean. "Guten tag yourself," says Dean. Agents "Angus" and "Young" meet Sheriff Dietrich, who takes them to the morgue and shows them the young woman who was killed--two bite marks on her neck. A Satan-worshipping, Anne Rice-reading Gothic psycho vampire wannabe, suggests the sheriff. There was a witness, Ed Brewer, but not the most reliable guy. We see the brothers and the sheriff from the dead woman's viewpoint as the drawer is shut.

Season 4 is a lot like Season 3 in that there are several episodes to choose from, notably In The Beginning, I Know What You Did Last Summer, On the Head of a Pin and Monster at the End of This Book, not to mention the fact that Dean was brought out of hell by none other than the Angel Castiel following orders from God! So there was a lot of awesome stuff happening in Season 4 (yes, and Sam broke the final seal and set Lucifer free) still I was able to find one episode that packed so much into it that it just set it head and shoulders above the rest [there is a pun there, folks.]

So, we’ll do a quick review of the rules and then I’ll present my case for my choice for Season 4’s pivotal episode.

"Metamorphosis”
--Robin's Rambles by Robin Vogel

With Ruby at his side, Sam works his mind-mojo to exorcise a demon, but the man taunts him about being a hero and "all the things you and this slut do in the dark." Sam successfully kills the demon, making Ruby smile, but he has no idea Dean is watching outside the window.

Sam tests the working pulse of the host body and reports to Ruby, “I feel good--no more headaches.” He's helping the man walk out when Dean enters, furious, demanding to know who SHE is. "Good to see you again, Dean," says Ruby. Dean immediately attacks her, all set to murder her with the demon-killing knife. Ruby and Dean battle it out until Ruby has Dean in a choke-hold. Sam intervenes, orders her to stop. She does. "Aren't you an obedient little bitch," gasps Dean. Sam sends Ruby to the emergency room with the victim. "Dean!" calls Sam, but his brother walks away from him.
“In the Beginning”
--Robin’s Rambles by Robin Vogel

Willow Motel - Dean lies asleep. Sam leaves the room and gets into a car with Ruby. "Ready?" she asks. "Definitely," she replies. They take off. Dean dreams of hell, red eyes and screams. He awakens to find Castiel sitting on his bed, asking, "What were you dreaming about?" "You like to get your freak on watching others sleep?" asks Dean grumpily. "You have to stop it," says Castiel mysteriously, and touches Dean's forehead with two fingers. Dean wakes up on a bench, a cop telling him he can't sleep here. "Here" turns out to be a bench advertising Jay Bird's Diner and Sugar Free Tab. He checks his phone--no signal. Dean enters Jay Bird's, where "Ramblin' Man" is playing. He sits beside a handsome, dark-haired man and asks what city and state he's in. "Lawrence, Kansas," the other man tells him, and, realizing Dean's had a tough night, orders a cup of coffee for him.

When Dean pulls out his phone and asks where he can get reception, the other man chuckles and suggests, "The USS Enterprise?" Observing the 70's outfit on the man serving his coffee, Dean says, "You know Sonny and Cher broke up, right?" "Sonny and Cher broke up?" the other man asks. Dean eyes him strangely, then turns to look at the clothing on everyone else in the diner. Dean reads of Nixon's resignation and spies the date on the newspaper over the man's shoulder--4/30/73. "Hey, Winchester!" calls Mr. D, a man entering the diner. Both Dean and his new friend turn around. "Son of a bitch, it's good to see you, Corporal!" He comes over to shake the hand of John Winchester! "Dad?" says Dean softly. Noticing how intently Dean is staring at him, John asks, "Do we know each other?" "I guess not," says Dean. "Take it easy, pal," says John, and exits the diner, but not without shooting Dean a weird look first.
