Fans of Supernatural enjoy the show for different reasons.  So we’re used to the dissent that comes with a whole lot of people expressing their opinions over what they like and don’t like.   One element that we don’t seem to fight over, though, is our fondness for the brothers’ relationship.  In fact, if you ask fans on the forums or at the conventions what made them originally fall in love with the show, chances are you’ll hear “the brothers ‘ relationship” as the answer.

We love the relationship so much that we got some good natured ribbing about it in some actual Supernatural episodes.  It’s evident from the following scenes that those involved in the making of the show know just how important that brotherly interaction is to us:

“I mean, the best parts are when they cry.” - The Publisher, Supernatural 4.18, “The Monster at the End of This Book”

“…  So we’d have to blow off the scene where they sit on the Impala and talk about their feelings.”

“Ha. Right.  You answer the hate mail.” -Kevin and Bob’s conversation, Supernatural 6.15, “The French Mistake”

I was just heading to the kitchen to feed my dog Harry when I heard Dean yell out “Son of a bitch”, which is how my phone announces I have a message. I grabbed it assuming it was something everyday, only to see that long awaited tweet from @jarpad….. “It’s a boy :)”

KABOOOOM! Supernatural fandom explodes.

I let out a little squeal and a “Yay!” to no one in particular and quickly texted my friend Hazel. “Padababy is born!” Quick as a flash back, “Yay! OMG!”

Congratulations to Jared and Genevieve on the arrival of their son!  On the very, very, VERY off chance that either of them will read this, here are the "Top 10 Things A New Parent Should Know, From A New Parent."

Before diving back into this, I again would like to issue a reminder. Please, please, please! I beg, plead, ask and request, no attacks on the actresses. This is a sensitive subject to the fandom in general, I realize that. But this is a look at the demon Ruby, not at the women who worked on a film set. Also, please keep in mind that this is entirely opinion.

So we know that Ruby was a witch back when the plague was big. In Supernatural, there appears to be a couple different kinds of witches. Those who think they are smart enough to outwit the demon they are getting their power from but end up in hell, and those who have found a way to use their power to keep living VERY long lives and their souls out of hell. And then there are those who are the ‘just plain ignorant/stupid’ category of witch. My guess is that Ruby fell in the first category but probably wanted to be in the second.

In seeing the interaction between Ruby and her prior mistress “Tammy” in Malleus Maleficarum, I got the impression that as a human, she knew what she was getting into. This tells me that even as a person, she was attracted, intelligently attracted no less, to things of evil. She was most likely not a nice person. At all.

So she dies and ends up in hell where her soul begins to be twisted into a demon. And not just any demon, but one that remembers being human. I believe this was a plan of Lilith’s. Hell and heaven both had a long view on planning, and they planned for contingencies. I think they sometimes experimented just in case it might come in handy down the road. Lilith had plenty of time in the pits of hell to toy with many ideas. I doubt that Ruby was the only demon on the experimental rack.

No, I’m not going to be ok without Bobby. Yes, he has done enough but I don’t care, I need Bobby. This came as a rather surprising revelation. I hadn’t known how much he meant, how much he means. I have been away from fandom for a while. Life got in the way and so I’ve had to take a step back, but I need to grieve Bobby and that will be easier with others. I’m not writing with a plan, I’m just writing as a cathartic release, and I guess we’ll see where it goes.

Over the years, Supernatural has shown it can stretch beyond its classic rock roots.  We’ve seen Dean lip-synching to Air Supply, Bobby referencing Joni Mitchell and Sam choosing to put Jason Manns on his iPOD playlist. Still, I doubt Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot will ever be played on the show.  I’m sure the mere thought of it has “Executive Consultant” Eric Kripke spinning on his swivel seat in Los Angeles.  But in light of “The Mentalists” episode, and before we all start spewing the pea soup, I’d like to share the lyrics for Lightfoot’s classic “If You Could Read My Mind”.

“We're all we've got left. We ought to be able to stick together against everything. If we don't have each other, we don't have anything.” (The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton)

The Winchesters are often described as “outsiders”. They see themselves in that light, especially when they use it as a synonym for “freak”.  They operate outside the law, and they live on the fringe of society.  In fact, the theme of this season, as described by Sera Gamble and Bob Singer, is that the boys are outlaws, a la Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But for all their “outsider” street cred, they’re still ordinary people.  They may hunt monsters, be killed and resurrected at an alarmingly frequent rate, and be extraordinarily handsome, but in many ways, they’re still average folk. They need food, a place to sleep, and people to love.   That makes them a lot like the rest of us.

While little Sammy has the addiction issues out front and center, our Dean likes to hide his issues. Granted, Sam is all kinds of messed up, but with him, at least, he has the whole intellectual objectivity going on so he knows he’s unhealthy most of the time and when he doesn’t, he has rationalized the hell out of his dysfunction. But Dean? Oh Dean lives in the land of denial, which is not a river in Egypt (newsflash: makes sense Dean would be judged by an Egyptian God – oh show, you are so allusory).
