Recap - "Changing Channels" - Part Two

“We now return to Supernatural.” Back to the sunny, very warm and inviting Sun and Sands. We get a repeat of Dean's cheesy "Son of a Bitch" tagline, just in case you forgot where they left off. Sam escorts the bikini clad bombshell out and Dean watches lustfully. Actually, that's no sitcom acting. He actually does that! Dean waves goodbye to the girl, and Sam closes the door shaking his head. "How long do we to have to keep doing this?" Dean says behind his fake smile. “I don’t know. Maybe forever? We might die in here," Sam nervously answers with his own false grin. “How is that funny!” Dean shouts at the laugh track and audience. “Vultures.” He's fraying at the edges.

Suddenly Castiel comes in to the oohs and ahhs of the laugh track. Luckily none of that phases him and says he doesn’t have much time. “Something is not right. This thing is way more powerful than it should be.” “The Trickster?” Dean asks. "If it is a Trickster.” Just as Sam asks for clarification, Castiel goes flying against the wall.

Speak of the Devil, in pops the Trickster! He does the celebrated “hi-yo” entrance that happens so much in those lousy shows. He turns toward the angel struggling on the ground. "Hi Castiel," he says cheerfully. Castiel can't answer back since he has duct tape over his mouth now. You know, as bad as The Trickster has it in for Sam, Castiel is getting it about ten times worse. There's an untold story there that I hope we find out eventually. He zaps Castiel away.

Dean asks where he sent Castiel in an overprotective manner. It’s so nice how Dean has that type of concern for Cas, just like he would for Sam or Bobby. I know many people have been getting down on Castiel this season, but I for one still love the bond between Dean and him. I’d like to see a stronger one formed between Sam and Cas. Anyway, The Trickster answers, “Relax, he’ll live. Maybe.” Dean gets really angry. He’s done with the monkey dance. “Playing our roles, that’s your game?” The Trickster tells him that’s only half of the game.

Sam asks “What’s the other half?” Ooh, time for a delicious plot twist! “Play your roles out there.” They still don’t get it and the Trickster is never one to be afraid to spell things out. “Sam starring as Lucifer, Dean starring as Michael, your celebrity deathmatch. Play your roles.” Sam is confused. “You want us to say yes to those sons of bitches?” You know, that saying in plural form always sounds off to me, yet this show is using it more and more. Ah well, it serves its purpose. “Hells yeah. Let’s light this candle!”

Sam is still having issues with the idea. “We do that the world will end.” The Trickster is unsympathetic. “Yeah, whose fault is that? Who popped Lucifer out of the box? Look it started. You started it. It can’t be stopped. So let’s get it over with.” Oh, so that’s why the Trickster has it out for Sam. He’s blaming him for starting the apocalypse. I think. Okay, I’m only guessing.

Sam is guilt ridden, Dean is angry. “Heaven or Hell, which side you on?” The Trickster claims he’s not on either side. Dean doesn’t buy it. “You’re grabbing ankle for Michael or Lucifer. Which one is it?” “You listen to me you arrogant dick. I don’t work for either of those SOBs, believe me.” Dean prods further, for he hasn’t gotten what he wants. “No, you’re somebody’s bitch.” Suddenly the Trickster loses his temper and slams Dean against the wall. “Don’t you ever, ever presume to know what I am.”

Dean and the Trickster have this long, mean, ominous stare down. The Trickster holds onto to Dean by the throat with one hand and turns around to Sam to issue ultimatums with the other. “Now you listen very closely. Here’s what’s gonna happen. You’re gonna suck it up, accept your responsibilities and play the roles that destiny has chosen for you.” “And if we don’t,” Sam says with defiance since Dean can’t say much in that stranglehold. “Then you’ll stay here in TV Land, forever.” Glare from Sam, glare from a struggling Dean, back to the smug Trickster. “300 channels and nothing’s on.” I wish these guys would end up on Mythbusters. I would love to see them high five each other over blowing stuff up.

What happens next works too. The Trickster snaps his fingers, and they’re at a crime scene. Dean and Sam turn around and they’re both wearing blue suits with blue shirts, no tie and sunglasses! They’re Horatio Caine clones. God, I hate that show. Don’t get me wrong, I love the original CSI in Las Vegas. The rest, I don’t need to tell you why I hate them. Dean does just a perfect job for me.

“Oh come on,” Dean says, definitely not happy. Sam isn’t looking too pleased either. A guy comes up to them asking what they think. Dean gives a very agitated, “go screw yourself,” line. The original line is a bit more colorful than that, but I’ve already gone overboard with the four letter words in this recap and will refrain. Sam is a little more polite, asking for a minute. Ah, good cop bad cop. Like that’s never been done before! Sam tells Dean he’s gotta calm down.

“Calm down? I’m wearing sunglasses at night. You know how does that? No talent douche bags. I hate this game. I hate that we’re in a procedural cop show, you want to know why? Because I hate procedural cop shows. 300 on television and they’re all the freaking same. It’s ooh, plane crashed here. Oh shut up!” This is why being a TV writer is my dream job. I want to be able to get away with venting like that at my job!

Sam notices that the one guy that came to talk with them is eating a lollipop. That could be their guy. Sam tells him to follow his lead. They walk, no, they cooly stride over, putting the sunglasses on their faces, and they're ready for some investigating! This is so funny because Sam is actually getting into the role. Maybe because he knows he’s a dead ringer for David Caruso. It's certainly evidence that he does watch procedural cop shows.

While the boys "make their entrance" a remade version of the CSI: Miami theme song, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” plays. It should be noted that when I got to see this on the critics preview, the ACTUAL Who version of the song played. I guess they couldn’t get the rights in time for airing. Bummer, but it’s still a great entrance. Dean's voice goes into a Caruso husk and he asks what do they got. Victim has ligature marks on his neck and a roll of quarters down his throat.

And here she did it again – Ave Alice, lady of wonderful recaps, thank you!! (And thanks again for the gorgeous screencaps!)
What happened to Dean, though, I thought he liked Caruso – in one episode (can’t say which one, might be TimeIsOnMySide, not sure) he says ‘great, my man Dave Caruso would love to hear it’… well, well… doesn’t matter really, I don’t like CSI Miami, either.

With all the fun this episode provided (yes, I’m still looking for that head I laughed off), it had this sombre note at the end, and I love that you touched on that as well. I am right there with you – being so proud of Dean how he assumed control and became the leader we’ve known him to be able to be (is this one more step into ‘The End’s direction or is he treading on another path here?), and feeling compassion for Sam whose devastated look at the Trickster’s revelation shook me to the core. Again. How Jared does that eludes me, but he does it marvellously.

I’m getting a wee bit apprehensive of the further course of the show… what cruelties will Kripke provide us with? Somehow I can’t shake the feeling that we’re headed to a magnificent, thought-provoking, but somehow sad ending… I don’t mean to dampen anyone’s expectations here, I just can’t lose this notion…

Best always, Jas

Alice, delightful recap as usual. Thanks again for sharing. Jeremy Carver has just joined Sera Gamble on my pantheon of writers. “Seriously”, he had already secured a place in my heart for A Very Supernatural Christmas, but now he outdid himself. The man is brilliant.
Many of my thoughts on this episode have already been expressed by other posters, so I’ll make just a few observations. First, Changing Channels is a jewel of an episode. I haven’t watched something so funny since Bad Day at Black Rock. It’s tough to pick a favorite part, but I’d say it’s a tie between CSI and Knight Rider. The jackpot line is the funniest Sam’s line since “I lost my shoe”. And the whole Caruso impersonation – I have no words. Jared is awesome! But I guess I said that many times before… Wink On the other hand, the idea of Dean driving Sam is utterly hilarious! Add to that the Knight Rider theme in the background and you have an instant classic.
On the serious side, Sammy’s sad face kills me every time. His reaction to Gabriel’s revelation was reminiscent of the way he reacted at being told he is the Vessel - sadness and silent despair. It seems he feels already doomed. He never looked so much in need of a big brother to take care of him, but I don’t think Dean is in the mood right now. When he is like this I feel like putting him on my lap – despite all that size - and tell him it’s OK.
Sorry for my fangirling! Sometimes I just can’t hide the Samgirl in me. But I want to add that Jensen was every bit as good. And yes, the leader in him is clearly showing. All in all, the pair of them is gold.

Great recap, Alice.

Like you I felt there was a just a little something missing with Castiel and the boys at the end...after all that Sam and Dean were just going to get in the car and drive away leaving Cas behind -- or to use his angel wings to fly away. That's a small point of disappointment (very small) and really perhaps more of a creative choice. Off the cuff I'd say a shot of the three standing at the Impala in their shellshocked mode would have been better than Dean and Sam climbing in the Impala and getting ready to drive off. Small bit though, ruins nothing.

Great job on the recap...the only reason the screen shots don't do justice to the Knight Rider part is 'cause they're not moving, and there's no music. Like you, I loved that show and they nailed that opening montage perfectly -- heck, the whole premise of the show they nailed perfectly.

As for Jared and CSI Miami...I'm sure he only watched it for research, only!

Hi Andrea,
nice to hear from you here again... Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with a little 'fangirling'!

Justin,
it's great to hear that Supernatural has many fans in Korea! It's great that you're letting us know. As for the song you ask about - it's a song they put together for the intro of this episode. Alice put the lyrics on the banner of this site, have a look. You won't find the song on websites as of yet, I guess. But who knows... with time....?

Cheers, Jas

This might be your best recap to date. And don't sweat the length, the more Proustian, the better!

Oh man, Knight Rider, complete with flashing lights, misty, watercolor memories of youth. Catch a rerun when you can, man has it aged terribly.

If Caruso actually speaks like that, how do those writers sleep at night? On silk sheets, rolling naked in money? Bastards.

Hey heaven, instead of pinning everything on humanity, maybe you should have come up with some better padlocks. And of course Cas was wallpaper, that's what they've been for thousands of years, no? Heh.

And Dean's speech was perfect.

Jasminka, I remembered that line of Dean's, too, but I always assumed he was being a very annoyed smartass.

What can I say Alice? You're still my hero (right after Dean, Sam, Eric Kripke, Jeremy Carver, Sera Gamble... you know)!

I'm agreeing with Randal that this is is your best recap to date (if this season keeps up like this your recaps are gonna be better and bigger *happy dance*).

Knight Rider! Does that bring back memories from childhood! But I agree that the Impala beats kitt!

Episode night for you is it? Enjoy it! (and tell Becky yhat she's not allowed to touch!)

Alice once again...GREAT RECAP. Thanks so much for all the screencaps of the impala alias ‘KITT’. Knight Rider was always my favorite show. So glad they used that in their TV Land. All of them were great.
I really think Dean's re-emergence as the leader means a lot to the story. Watching s1 epi, he is even stronger than back then. If he had been this confident in s4, Sam's condition would not have eluded him.
All the 'destiny' stuff is just words really. It's want the angels and demons want the boys to believe….once again screwing with their minds. I wish, just once, there would be an epi that tells the boys their decision is correct, at least one that ends on a hopeful note. However, all the sad endings create more interest down the road. People just like to see others in worst shape then themselves. Happy is for TV Land! Razz
I can truly see the trickster as an angel. Kripke's angels are not nice people, and the trickster has been using people for his amusement for a while all the way. That's what makes trickster bad. Making him an angel give Kripke a reason to bring him back as a 'good' guy. Long time theme in stories...the evil guy turns good. That will make all the trickster fans happy! And it Gabriel/trickster atones for his ways…I’ll like him too.
Jas, I hope you’re wrong about the 'bad' impressions. I really think Kripke is going to have this turn out good. Even without a s6, he has always wanted to do a movie of SPN, so the boys will have to be around!

Great way to relive this episode. Thank you Alice! And can I just say?

'Calm down? I am wearing SUNglasses at NIGHT.'

Best. Line. Ever.

Alive, this recap was so all good. Double size and funny as heck! You have surpassed yourself. What will you do next? LOL

Unfortunately I've never watched CSI so I'll have to do so to see Caruso and his shades. Still loved the funny from Sam and Dean in the parody though.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this episode and also your hilarious recap.

Love the Trickster/Gabe and very much hope to see him again this season. He did seem to be thinking very hard about Dean's challenge and he would make a great ally.

Jasminka, I don't want to have bad vibes about the season ending episode. I really can't believe that Kripke would break all our hearts by having the series end in despair and death. Just. Can't. Believe. That! Won't. Believe. That!

I do hope I’m wrong here, too. And, to be honest, deep down I don’t believe it either…

As for a movie… haven’t heard of those plans of Kripke’s – gosh, the idea is great, but… do Jensen and Jared actually carry enough weight in terms of box office reliability to be offered the leads in a movie? Don’t get me wrong here – I’d be the first to cast them, of course, and there can be no other sensible choice when it comes to the question of who should play these roles…. However I’m not sure about the rules of the business here… Oh, dear, I’m negative… again… Don’t mind me. I’ve been sick for four days now and I’m the world’s worst patient… I’ll soon change again to cheerful mode as soon as this cold leaves me.
Love Jas

Randal,
I guess you’re right – Dean’s reference to “my man Jack” (as in Nicholson) which he does in Season One a few times is by far more soaked with respect and a bit insane awe… the Caruso-bit might be more of an annoyed smartass. I stand corrected.
And I actually love Dean’s smartass remarks, cutting as ever…
Cheers, Jas

Randal and Jas, I love Dean's smartass comments. I hope they never stop. I don’t remember Dean’s Caruso comment from earlier, but at this point in the trickster’s game, I think Dean just lashed out at anything. His patience was wearing thin. But he got it together to figure it out in the end!

On a side note, I would like to know how Cas found them. Glad he did, but is this a hint of a glitch in the boy’s sigils? Hope not...and that this doesn't prove to be a way Lucifer can find them in future epi!

Alice, love the long lengthiness ... It's your site, maunder on all you want!

Jas, I really hope it's just your cold messing with your happy-ending generator but I must admit I've been having a few nasty thoughts in that direction myself. I know Mr. K and his Misery Making Minions love to twist our sensibilities and make us squeak but they wouldn't actually leave us in a pool of blood ... would they? ... Um, hello? ...

Something really hit me with this episode. When the Trickster!Gabriel was saying that it was ALWAYS them, suddenly I thought of John and his conversation with Azazel in My Time of Dying. Azazel asked John if he knew, or figured it out, and John said something like "mostly".

We assumed that meant about the demon blood, psychic abilities and the demon army. Thus inspiring John to tell Dean to kill Sam if he couldn't save him.

But what if John REALLY figured it out?? What if he knew his boys were vessels? I guess we will just have to wait to find out.

I also have a bit of a theory about why Sam seems to get the brunt of Gabriel's abuse. As the middle child, he may idolize his older brother and envy his younger one. Thus the brunt of his turmoil gets directed at Sam because he represents Lucifer.

As for where this season will end? All I can say is this. Kripke is god and I have faith.
