Ever wonder where all these great Supernatural episode titles come from? I did, so I decided to go through season-by-season and find the pop culture references associated with the episode titles. The first season was a bit tricky as you’ll see because most of the episode titles are simply a reference to the monster of the week. But as the seasons go on, there are plenty of tasty pop culture treats that I think you’ll find interesting! And if you’re a wikipedia dork like me then this is kinda like heaven.

It's retro recap time!  In continuation with the three part series I started with "Salvation" before season six started, here is part two, "Devil's Trap."  Re-live the magic when the brothers cared for each other!

Why recap “Salvation?”  Easy.  “Devil’s Trap” and “In My Time of Dying” have always been high on my list, but it just didn’t feel right doing those without covering the first episode in that trilogy.  Sure it’s not as good as those other two, but it’s important!  So on with recap.

Scenes From Season 1 – Part 3 – by Elle2

It’s the final third of the inaugural season of Supernatural.  We’ve learned how the Winchester’s grew up, what drives them, Sam has revenge on the mind and anger issues with John, Dean is a good soldier yet hides his own inner fears, Mary is sorry – for what we’ve yet to learn, Sam has additional ‘abilities’ and is not alone, Dean has a special job that is not finished and demons are trying to trap John who has finally reunited with his sons only to leave again for safety’s sake. The final part of the season starts off with some riotous humor before moving on to some further development of Sam and Dean and the final three episodes drive us hard and fast to the smashing [yeah, I know] finale.

Let’s get started:

Scenes From Season 1 – Part 2 – by Elle2

The first eight episodes of Season 1 laid quite a bit of groundwork on the Winchester’s history and some conflicts: Sam with Dad, Dean with self-worth, Sam over Jess’ death and gave us some good old brotherly banter. The next eight episodes really found Supernatural’s creative forces finding their stride and while a couple of episodes could be deemed as clunkers overall it is a strong second portion to the very first season of Supernatural.

Here are the scenes that ‘leapt’ out at me as I jotted down the episode titles:

I don’t know where I came up with this idea – other than it happened while I was watching Wendigo and the ‘idea light bulb’ started flickering. Since I’m fairly certain there are no demons, ghosts or angels lurking, hiding or resting in my head, I figured I’d try the idea and see how it comes out.

I’m going to pick one scene from each episode, insert all or a portion of the scene’s dialogue, one or two screencaps and a short narrative from me for each episode of each season. The impetus here is to pick one scene that either best expresses that particular episode, the series as a whole, adds to something we know, really stands out (although in some episodes that will be hard to not just include the entire episode) or otherwise adds to a character.

I think the reason for this, besides being a way to pass Hellatus, is to either introduce new fans to moments in the series, or perhaps allow you (and me) to ‘see’ a progression throughout the five years. Most of these scenes I’ve chosen simply by sitting down with a notepad, a pen and my memory of the episode and writing the first scene that comes to mind from each episode. Occasionally (as is the case for the scene I’ve chosen from Home) I went with a scene that is very powerful but likely is not the one that we always think of when we think of that episode but in this case it’s a powerful scene and it speaks to the mindset of a character and adds to that character’s arc or tells us something about their mindset so I wanted to focus there.

When it’s all said and done, I’m hoping that we get an overall picture of the show, the characters and each season’s arc, all through one scene per episode. It’s a journey pure and simple, this is not a commentary by me on whether any scene chosen is the best or a favorite but perhaps just sums up that episode or something about the show.

So, I invite you into the first of five articles…Scenes from Season 1:

There is Something in the Closet

One of the perks of a long summer hiatus is the possibility to watch the occasional Supernatural episode without the curiosity and the passionate dread of waiting for new turns in the story. I try not to watch the seasons too often, as I still want to be able to spot something new or to feel as if the story was not completely familiar to me.

Upon watching Home again, after quite a while, I felt again drawn into its tragedy almost like at my first encounter with it, having to use a tad too many tissues for my taste… So, I had the idea of inviting you all to an Open Couch of episodes that have moved and continue to move me… The whole show does that, but some episodes have got under my skin in a way I had not exactly believed possible.

Because nothing defines Hellatus more than taking on the impossible, whether it’s picking the best episode, best song, best character or even trying to convince yourself that it really isn’t difficult to last this period of time without a new Supernatural episode, I’ve decided to try my hand at a particularly impossible task; picking the one episode from each season that is ‘THE’ pivotal episode.

No doubt this will spark discussion – at least I’m hoping it does – and I’m greatly anticipating others’ thoughts on the topic. Further, it is very possible that given time, and another season, that some of these might change – course, if like Cas I drank a liquor store, it’s very likely all would change.

It’s important to define pivotal, so here it is: 1) something vitally important, especially in determine the outcome, progress or success of something; 2) acting as a pivot (which in its noun form is a point on which something turns.)

“Devil's Trap”

This episode is one of my top-five favorites. So many firsts—Bobby Singer and his fascinating salvage yard, his dog, Rumsfeld, the Key of Solomon, the Devil's Trap, demon exorcism! Most of this became common-place, of course, but seeing it for the first time—ambrosial!

From the moment the brothers learn their father is in Meg's clutches, they realize they need help to find him, so they rush over to South Dakota and Bobby, who, we learn, pumped John full of buckshot last time they saw each other. Yet Bobby is more than willing to help Sam and Dean get John back.

Meg comes to them, making a grand entrance (starting, it seems, with killing Rumsfeld, who is never seen again). They capture her, tie her in a chair under a devil's trap. “Where's my father, BITCH?” demands Dean. “Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?” counters Meg. “Oh, I forgot—you can't!” She insists John is dead, she killed him herself, slowly, painfully, and made him scream and beg for his life. She and Dean exchange a lot of ugly insults and she's furious when she realizes he's sending her back to hell even after getting the information he wanted. “I LIED!” he says with great satisfaction. Sam starts to exorcise the demon, even though Bobby warns them there's a girl in there, and only the demon is keeping her alive.

Sam keeps reading from the bible in sexy Latin (his voice sublime), sending Meg's smoky essence back to hell. The boys learn where John is and that he is still alive. Sadly, the broken body the demon used/abused for a year dies. Bobby assures them he's spoken with the cops before and knows what to do. He wants them to go get their father, and he shouldn't be a stranger in the future.
