What’s your scene?
When you hear an episode title what comes to mind? Is it a scene, a moment, a line or song? And why? It is your favourite or is it the emotional impact it has on you? Maybe it simply makes you laugh or hide under the covers.
I have randomly listed three episodes and put my thoughts on each. Now it’s your turn. What are your thoughts on the following episodes?
The Pilot
When I think of the Pilot, the scene that impacted me the most was the confrontation on the bridge between Dean and Sam.

When Sam makes a comment that if it wasn’t for pictures of his Mom he wouldn’t even know what she looked like and even if they did find what killed her, it still wouldn’t bring her back. This upsets Dean to the point where he grabs Sam by his jacket and pushes him up against the bridge. He tells Sam not to talk about her like that. Here we have a situation where I can really sympathize with both brothers. I feel bad for Dean because by knowing his mother, he is still affected by her death and so protective of her memory.
Crossroad Blues
The scene that I always think of first is with the artist George Darrow.
Talk about the old adage "Be careful what you wish for" or in this case "Be careful how you wish for." George had asked to be talented but did not specify he wanted to be famous as well. So he sold his soul, never really benefiting from the deal. George impressed me, how he turned down Sam and Dean’s help and was willing to take responsibility for his actions. To think years later Bobby would be taught the same lesson from Crowley. "You get more if you phrase it properly."
I Believe The Children Are Our Future
The scene that gets to me each time is when young Jesse learns the truth about being half human and half demon.
Sam warns Jesse that if he goes with his demon possessed mother people will die and if he makes the wrong choices it will haunt him for the rest of his life. When Jesse asks why is he telling him this Sam replies ‘Because I have to believe someone can make the right choice. Even if I couldn’t’.

The ‘Ham’ moments were pretty funny. The look on Sam’s face when he walked in to see Dean eating a ham sandwich was priceless. I have to admit it grossed me out a bit that he was still eating it.
I believe, though. The ham scene and the hairy palm scene with Sam yelling at Dean, "don't use my razor!" Hysterical.
I know what you mean about the pilot scene. I remember wondering what happened to make these two so distant.
In Crossroad Blues, it's the aerial shot of the boys standing at the crossroads at Lloyd's bar. Then they start digging up the box and going through its contents. And when Sam mentions summoning a demon, Dean says, "Not just summoning one. These people are actually making deals with the damn thing." The tone in his voice, soft, but sickened, heavy with incredulity, bitterness, anger, and a sense of, 'what the hell...?' I could feel him fighting his way towards figuring out the details of John's deal, and I kept hoping he wouldn't go there. I didn't want to see him in any more pain.
In Children Are Our Future, I immediately think of the scene in Jesse's kitchen while he's making his lunch, and then the whole conversation that follows. The first time I saw it, I just remember thinking, ‘Oy vey, that is one peculiar kid.’
I’m not a horror fan either. The scene when Troy got out of the car looking for Constance and her handprint formed on the car window startled me the first time I saw it.
Nothing really stands out.... (For shame! I need a rewatch.) The scene on the bridge was good because as you said, it showed us some of what drove the boys to do what they did and it really shaped them in years to come. It also showed us some of the key differences in Sam and Dean’s personalities; Dean closing himself off and Sam pushing.
Perhaps the scene with Jessica on the ceiling at the end, mostly in terms of what it stood for, as it was another cycle that could only end badly, as the one before it had.
Crossroad Blues
The moment the boys realised that Evan didn’t sell his soul for fame or money but for his wife. I just thought it was a really poignant moment, that love could drive you that far. I often wonder if all those who sold their soul would have done so if they realised what the true price was. Not only that but it set the scene for an action that would have apocalyptic consequences (can’t forget that).
I Believe the Children Are the Future.
Ditto (with your thoughts). I found it heart-warming that a man (Sam) who had fallen so far still had hope and faith in others. It would have been so easy for him to be wary of everything with a supernatural influence and just kill the crap out of all of them but he never did, still judging each individual case by its merits. And in fairness, as Sam thought the freaking anti-Christ was capable of good then he really had his glass half full mentality back by that stage.
I also found the note Jesse left for his parents to be really sad. The anti-Christ with the heart of gold. Who would have thought it!.
In relation to the ham, that was just gross. It was probably full of e-coli and rabies and everything. Urgh. Though fair play to Dean, you have to love his ‘waste not, want not’ mentality.
Thanks Karen.
So true about Jessica, I remember thinking what a horrible vicious circle it was for her to die the same as Mary.
I think Evan selling his soul to save his wife, really hit home for Dean. I always felt when Dean lashed out at Evan for being selfish he was really lashing out at John even though at the time he wasn’t 100% sure John had sold his soul.
I also wondered if people realise what they’re getting into when making any kind of deal. Maybe they go into some kind of denial, they just don’t believe it’s really going to happen.
Crossroad Blues - I always think of the scene where Dean is making a deal with the Crossroads Demon and sarcastically states: "Do you think maybe you could throw in a set of steak knives?"
I Believe the Children Are Our Future - The first thing that comes to mind is Dean's "it froze like that" face.
The look on John’s face was so heartbreaking, he looked so shattered.
I just love Dean’s wit and snarky comments, especially when he was in a dangerous situation.
In The children Are our Future the jokes about Dean stand out, and also action figure Cas.
The other episode-nothing.
Actually Karen, other eps would have gotten more of a rise out of me-like Supernatural Christmas.
I forgot about the Cas action figure. I wonder if they let Misha keep it?
Just to let you know I do have more on the way and since it is the Holiday season Supernatural Christmas will be in the next instalment.
faith : Dean getting electroshocked
in my time of dying: Dean and john talking at the end
tall tales: the woman in red (hahaha that song!)
what is and what should never be: Dean saying goodbye to sam, his mom, jess and carmen.
AHBL2: the monologue
black day at black rock: I'm batman!
Bedtime stories: Dude could you be more gay?
dream a little dream of me: This is what you're gonna become!
... I'll come back later.. cuz this is gonna take a looooooong time :)
I love your picks. I will be submitting more as well.
I love hearing how things or moments can affect us differently.
Constance's ghost flickering under the tree stands out to me. That scene was so beautifully light so that it was illuminated and yet eerie at the same time. Plus the ghost girl who hitchhikes is my favorite ghost story. Although the most quotable moment comes from Sam: "When I told Dad I was afraid of the thing in my closet, he gave me a .45." It really sets the tone of how the boys were raised.
Crossroad Blues
Didn't really like that episode. But the scene that stands out for me is when is Dean talking to the crossroad demon and realizes that he could have brought John back. Plus it ties into "All Hell Breaks Loose."
I Believe the Children are Our Future
Well, when I hear that title I think of that awful song. But the episode that so many good moments--Dean with the hairy palm and the look on Sam's face when he tells Dean not to use his razor followed by Dean's smirk, Sam's heart-felt plea to Jesse to do the right thing because he still feels awful that he didn't.
Crossroad Blues - I really loved Dean's conversation with the x-rd demon. Was a great performance by Jensen to see how torn he was between what he knew he should do and what he was considering doing.
I Believe The Children Are Our Future - Hairy palm! LOL!!!!
