Happy episode day everyone! This is a pretty important one from a milestone perspective. It's the directorial debut of Jensen Ackles! Couple this is Smallville's 200th episode and it's a big night for The CW. So, how did Jensen do? Or for those that really don't notice the director's tricks, how was the episode in general? As a big fan of Crowley, not to mention the teasing by Mark Sheppard at last weekend's Chicago con over Crowley's fate, I'm very much anticipating this.
So, don't hold back, tell us what you think! Did Jensen do us proud? Jim Beaver? Mark Sheppard? Oh heck, everyone? For those that need a few teasers before viewing, check out the Spoilers page. Sablegreen has a good summary. Enjoy "Weekend at Bobby's."

OMG......I just don't knpw what to say......
Really, really loved Bobby chewing the boys out scene, including Dean's bearing his soul like a girl part. I do love vulnerable Dean. But, there's not a one of those guys (including Bobby) that know how to say please, thank you and help me without being cued.
You'd never know that this was Jensen's first go-round as director. I was so very impressed and actually had to keep reminding myself that it was him calling the shots. I'm sure Kim would be proud. aww, now I'm gonna tear up.
I cheered in delight when Jensen's name came up as director, and then I completely forgot about it because it was perfect. Only a couple times when I appreciated a shot did I remember. Could he be a little more flawless? : )
Loved Bobby and The Gambler montage. I had no idea Bobby was helping other hunters that way.
Loved Rufus. “you got that shovel”
Loved Crowely and his Hell Hound. However not feeling any sympathy for him.
The only thing I didn’t like was the television station screwing up the lip syncing within the first 40 MINUTES! of it.
Those people need to be fired, I mean really! 40 minutes to realize your out of sync! Idjits!
Mind you I did giggle the first time seeing Bobby’s lips moving to a female voice.
I guess I’ll have to wait for next week when they re-run it on another station to see it as it was intended.
It was all worth it! Wow that was a great episode. It was charming, had big heart, and everyone came together just for Bobby. For once everyone felt familiar and for the first time this season it felt like the old gang was back. The light hearted moments were great. Bobby and the lady next door, Sam and Dean on their hunt gone wrong (loved Sam getting tossed around in the background he normally does) and Rufus and the Sheriff coming through for Bobby as well as Sam and Dean. He's been watching out for everyone for so long so they were able to return the favor. So great.
Sam and Dean finally left the country! Great continuity with Dean's fear of flying. We finally got to see Bobby's life. It's quite crazy all he juggles. As for the directing, Jensen did a great job. I'm sure Kim Manners is smiling down on him right now. You could see a lot of his influence in Jensen's style. I'll study more when I get around to the recap but at first glance he did great.
The story was really great and I thought quite clever. I loved that Crowley was getting worn down by the problems in Hell like Castiel was with Heaven last week. These guys aren't exactly thriving in their roles as the new sheriffs in town. Interesting that Sam stepped in to save Crowley in the end. That stare they shared, anyone think it means something? Anyway, this was well written too, so good job Dabb and Loflin. This makes up for "Hammer of The Gods."
I'm sure I'll have more coherent thoughts tomorrow (and hopefully some better Internet access) but bravo. After today, I really needed an uplifting episode.
I'm with you Alice, Sam stepping in to save Crowley sent chills down my spine. There almost seemed to be an understanding, or at least shared knowledge, between them. It's rather unnerving. Plus that was our first view of Sam around a demon after his being in hell. He didn't look blood hungry, still waiting to hear how he's doing with that.
I'm wondering where the colt was during all this. And the knife. Seemed like they could play a role in persuading demons.
Still dislike Crowley, strongly. I'm all for putting a bullet from the colt through his skull or the knife across his throat. I get that he adds some great stuff to the story and mythology, but Ruby played an important part as well. So, I'm on team kill Crowley.
Loved watching the ep, but man, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall of some of the fans houses in Scotland for this one. Bet it was great.
I truly love this show.
Sam & Dean in Scotland had me in stitches. They could easily get a fake passport and fly into the UK without being stopped at passport control. There are thousands of people living in the UK with fake ID's so I wasn't too bothered by how easily Dean & Sam went international. The car Dean was driving looked a little like a Ford Metro or something----it was *tiny*, especially for Sam
Great episode.Well done Jensen
Dear Bobby, fair play to you, dude. You rock, a lot. This is the real life of a hunter. The hours of toil and mind numbing research. It’s not all just driving into a town, stake in hand, looking sexy, y’know.
And Marci? Bobby, she seemed really nice (and she dug you...) If she can put aside the woodchipped Lamia body you showered her with, she might be a keeper... (nah, not really)
Rufus, you’ve just moved up like 17 spaces on my ‘awesome’ list. You are so making it up as you go along. ‘I’m swallowing it...’ And you have a little smig!
Bobby and Rufus together are like the Donkey and Shrek of Supernatural, the banter between them is hilarious and there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for each other (except hold a recently um... evacuated ring, obviously)
You know the way a true friend is someone who, when you tell them you killed a person, shows up at your house with two shovels? It’s nice to see that Bobby has true friends outside of the Winchesters.
I love how every second sentence out of Crowleys mouth is some sort of sexual innuendo. He has a comeback for everything. ‘Just trying to hit double digits!’ Crowley, you dirty demon, you!
I’ve now scrapped everything I had on my ‘things I’d like to see on SPN' list and replaced them with just one. I want to hear Sam and Dean speak with a Scottish (or Northern Ireland) accent. Just once.
‘A deals a deal.’ Um, what? Sam, did you make a deal? Sammy, DID YOU MAKE A FECKING DEAL??
Wow. This was one hell
Some standout moments for me :
(a) The 2 confrontations between Bobby and Crowley - wonderful !
(b) Rufus, the Sheriff and even Marcy - I thought they were very nicely written and well protrayed. Loved the scene with Marcy and Bobby, when Marcy says that Bobby should watch "Drag Me to Hell" !
(c) Kenny Rogers !
(d) Bobby chewing out Dean and Sam.
(e) The whole story line was engaging and entertaining.
Loved the scene with the phones or Sam and Dean in that little British car or the hellhound threatening Bobby.
There were a lot of scenes with Bobby in Bobby's house, lots of phone calls but it never got boring!
I spent half of the time giggling anyways.
The only thing not really necessary was the flashback to the bones and the burning demon - I figured that much out by myself, but enjoyed the SFX shots nonetheless
Second, AWESOME episode about Bobby. I loved it, even though (as MyMADWorld said) here in Canada (coast to coast apparently) they had the sound track out of sync with the video. That made it really hard for me to watch. So I listened more than viewed and I'll have to find in online and download for a proper watch. (ha, like that is a hardship).
Sigh - I love this show.
This was the first one that made me think "That's my show!!!" I loved it. Rewatched three times already and I may have to forgive them Hammer of the Gods for this.
All of the other episodes have had an air of disquiet about them, which of course is necessary for the show to move on, but unnerving as a fan. This one I felt like I knew them again. That's the Sam and Dean I know.
I love Rufus and the Sheriff and may have to go after Sara with a flamethrower if she tries to kill them ;-)LMAO at the poor neighbour covered in blood!
Crowley was brilliantly done, especially with hating his son...nice twist there! And the burning bones thing is intriguing, hoping that has a deeper meaning and wasn't just thrown in for convienence...
I wil go to bed tonight a much happier fan than I got up this morning :-D
I know little about directing, but I second the commenters above who were amazed that an episode without Sam and Dean captivated me (The Rapture and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid were really uninteresting to me when the Winchesters were not around). And I agree with Ashke that the highest compliment I can pay this first-time director was that I forgot about the directing a few minutes in because it was such a good ride!
Loved the story - kept thinking, 'now it is going to end, it’s already had to much good stuff in it’, but it kept getting better. The only thing that jarred was Dean saying 'you are selfish, it's not all about you, you know'. I think his affront at not being listened to rang true and I think Bobby's chewing them BOTH out together was brilliant, I just do not think that Dean would have said that to Bobby in that way. But, a small quibble in an overall phenomenal episode.
Over the course of the series I have wavered on Bobby. I think Jim Beaver is fantastic, but Bobby sometimes has, to me, been a caricature of himself and some of the rants have come off as forced, out of place and just yelling because Bobby is supposed to play the grumpy all man (e.g. the 'boohoo' speech which I thought was a load of rubbish).
Same with Crowley. I think Mark Sheppard is brilliant as well, but sometimes Crowley's one-liners SOUND like one-liners you know? Rather than spontaneous clever quips in a real conversation between real people. Stuff like that snaps you out the journey you are on living a story, and reminds you that these are actors speaking scripted lines on a television show. Which is surely the opposite of what is intended.
Reminds me of the ‘appalling one-liner’ gold standard of Arnie stabbing someone in (I think?) Predator and then saying 'Stick around'. But this episode, Crowley was real, flawed, snarky, but likeable. And even a little pathetic when he gathered up his bones at the end. The height contrast between him and the guys as he moved past them in that last graveyard shot served to emphasize the whole ‘sad little man in real life’ angle. If that was a Jensen choice of shot, kudos to you sir.
I thought Rufus went from flat to a rounded character in this episode and the Sheriff was really likeable as well. The timing of Rufus in the scene where he swallowed the ring was great. And the neighbour was really well cast and did a good job. Sad to see Bobby alone again at the end. But it all felt like the Supernatural universe as a whole was rounding itself out and settling in nicely.
This episode was practically perfect in every way. Even Kenny Rogers! I agree with Alice. How can Dabb and Loflin write Dark Side of the Moon and Weekend at Bobby's, and then turn around and write Hammer of the Gods? Talk about the sublime to the gorblimey. Perhaps the metaphorical equivalent to lithium is in order?
Jim Beaver. Stellar work, no overacting in sight. Just pure class. Kudos, sir.
And Jensen Ackles. As always, sir, you rock. Seriously impressed. I was hoping it would be good. You blew me away. Oh me of little faith. You are a scarily talented guy, you look the way you look
But, as for the episode?
Loved it.
I simply loved, loved the story!! So much happened in 40 minutes!
Loved to learn so much about Bobby - it was about time, wasn't it? Kudos to Jim Beaver, one of the best actors in the universe!
And to Jensen, wow, he's so talented! Good job!
I liked Rufus and sheriff Mills before, but now I like them even better. Good job there, too!
All in all, a perfect Supernatural episode. Thank you!
Sam has changed, hasn't he?:
It was nice to see Sam & Dean going to such effort (that plane ride had to be torture for Dean) to help Bobby. We know they would, but it is nice to see it actually played out on screen.
I had to watch the episode a 2nd time before I even noticed the "directed by Jensen Ackles" on the screen. Awesome job! I was already so into the ep on the 1st watch that I didn't even pay attention to the credits!
My only disappointment: where was the Impala!? But that's okay. Great job, Jensen, Jim, Jared, Mark, Steven & all!
